ticket upgrade

I couldn't get the tickets I wanted because of last minute thing,but I've heard how you can get a ticket upgrade. How does this work?

I have heard that if you are picking up will call tickets you can inquire into upgrades and they are usually at a discount price.

I know of a friend that upgraded at one of the games toward the end of last year. The upgrade netted him free lower bowl seats to the next game and he gave them to me.
