Yeah I do agree with the tattoos and what kind of messages its sending the future generations but in the end how the kids of the future turn out are definitely more impacted by how their parents raised them. Basketball players are paid to play basketball, who cares if they have tattoos just so long as not every player is getting tattoo'ed up like Kenyon Martin I'm okay with it

With regards to individual efforts vs team efforts. Basketball is a team game remember during the years when Kobe/Tmac were individually great but their team suffered? I'm honestly more concerned about how many teams are stacked with talent. You'd think that Orlando would want to even out the talent around the league they don't give a rats *** about balance. Make the rich richer I guess.

The appearance of these current players compared to the older ones (that played in the past) I think have to do with how the game and sports, in general , have evolved. Take a look at foot ball, basketball, and even tennis. You have players having to become bigger and stronger than their opponents so its not out of the norm that basketball players need to become stronger and bigger as well.

Honestly I'm more afraid about the balance of teams in this league now. The lockout last season really solved nothing so long as you have David Stern as commissioner and owners willing to go above and beyond the luxury tax to win. I just honestly wish basketball season would start already..

Tattoos? Thugs? Did I somehow travel back to 1999? What the hell is going on here?

    Thugs?????

You know, the most tatted up player in the league is a white guy who's been busted for drug abuse, yet you didn't include him in your list of "thugs" and frankly, I can't think of anybody who has referred to Birdman as being a "thug."

I'm not saying you are a racist, Borntexan, I'm just heavily implying it.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Could those players be on steroids? Sure, anything is possible, but to claim they are because they look more muscular than players in the 90s is total ignorance.

Jordan got bigger and bigger as he spent more years in the league. Over time, players have lifted more and more. Players didn't lift as much back in the 80s and before.

Generally, you'll see players increase muscle size in the league. The ones that gain more are usually already bigger than their peers early on. Lebron is a perfect example. Karl Malone is another:

    And more:

    and many more...

Basketball is NOT good for muscle building. Too much cardio involved. Many players can't keep on extra muscle or simply don't need it when they are young, explosive, and quick. As they get older, they become less active on the court, which allows them to turn to an increase in muscle size as an advantage. They're able to keep more of it now that they play, practice, and move less than before.

The players who don't put on more muscle size are usually finesse players who are more gym rats (gym, as in basketball). They just work on their game and really never get into weights because it doesn't suit their game. Think Stockton, Duncan, Manu, Reggie, etc..

And Melo is too muscular? Now i know you're definitely smokin some good ****.

Tattoos? Seriously? Did you just list tattoos as a reason you lost interest in the NBA?

Too put it as delicately and vaguely as possible, you have serious issues, dude. Serious issues. And this is coming from a guy who has no tattoos or any interest in getting any tattoos... AND is also losing interest in the NBA himself. Your reasons are r****ded.

If you lived in the 70's you'd probably call everyone with bell bottoms or afro a thug too. It's called pop culture. Tattoos weren't "in" during the Jordan era. IMO you're either too superficial or narrow minded, or both.

In other news.. the white girl tramp stamp gang is the fastest growing thug crew in the nation, and must be dealt with asap.

I don't understand the OP's point about tattoos and thrash. If anything, you should lose interest because of the way Stern is running the NBA like a dictator and players are conforming. There's more 'fake' class acts because of the way they have to dress and cannot show their emotions any more. I'm just waiting on another Maxwell who doesn't give a damn about the rules.

Don't agree with any of the thug notions.

    My three:

    1. Divas. Just shut up and play hard. Show good sportsmanship and values.
    2. Inconsistent refs. Rigged or not, just ridiculous how much they affect outcomes.
    3. Parity. I personally don't like super teams and prefer a league where each franchise has a better winning shot.

The most overt racist attitude some people encountered is mainly from blacks.

They cry racism upon the slightest indications all the time and they feel entitled to get a free pass to be racist against others.

    And now you lost me.

Keven Durant has tons of Tattoos and he's the most like able and humble star in the NBA. you just stereotyped class as a reason.

I'll join the choir. It seems to me that the league has gotten less ghetto, not moreso. They may still have tattoos, but they dress better, fight less, and probably abuse drugs less (recreationally and for enhancing performance). With the increased focus on advanced statistics and more professional management, I think standards for character, team play, and selflessness have actually increased.

If I've lost some enthusiasm for the the league (and I suspect BornTexan's loss of enthusiasm may stem from the same cause), it's because I've gotten older and more busy and my priorities have changed. The league itself though has gotten better over time, not worse. Players are more skilled, more discplined and work harder than in previous eras; management is more professional and more focused on efficiency and doing the things necessary for winning.

Good idea for a thread, but it's going in all different directions now...

    Anyway, here are my reasons:

    1. Lack of dominant post play - When's the last time you watched a game and thought to yourself "man, the matchup at center should be really interesting to watch"? Basketball is supposed to be a big man's game (to quote Hakeem) but besides 1 or 2 players, today's centers are either skinny power forwards who don't even post up much or just flat out stiffs. I miss the days of Hakeem, Patrick, Shaq, David, Kareem, etc.

    2. Teams/Arenas lack identity - Seems like every team runs the same offense and defense, every arena looks and feels the same (same color shirts for playoffs games, waving balloons behind basket for free throws, etc.), half the uniforms look alike, every player is 6'9 and shooting 3-pointers....unless the team you're watching is one of the 3 or 4 super teams, it's boring as hell. I miss places like Boston Garden, the Forum, Key Arena (loudest in the league). The only place left in the NBA with any character is MSG.

    3. Too many 3-pointers - When the line was first introduced, it was supposed to be just for last second game-winning shots. It was never supposed to be incorporated into team's offenses. Now you've got teams launching 20 3-pointers a game which creates more missed shots and more long rebounds and therefore negating the need for big men to dominate the boards like they used to. (see reason 1)

I dont necessarily agree with the OP reasons but he is on to something

The NBA is not the quality it used to be and it has nothing to do with nostalgia

The quality of the game itself here is less about teamwork

Alot of guys are in the league because of height, or some guessed potential off of athleticism, not because of skill and standing above the rest

Much more entitlements in their attitudes with less work ethic and they make more than any other player have made in the past.

Among many other things mentioned here, refs, screw jobs in the playoffs...players whining their way to team up with others and lie about it (Dwight)

After watching the olympics although not as exciting as in past years, we could see how much more team ball, ball movements, off ball plays and general team basketball fiba plays than we do. If not for the athleticism, our team would've been in trouble big time. Forget challenging the Dream Team, they can't stop Juan Carlos Navarro. It was pathetic to see our best players struggle to run a half court set in international play, and how far off they were to the crisp team basketball that used to be played before now.

Sometimes its hard to watch, too many iso's, too many whistles, and the NBA only supporting a handful of teams regardless if they win or lose.

is carmela sponsored by Warner bros? why does he have a wb tattoo?

    Reasons I lost interest :
Players gangbanging. I'm not talking about players being ghetto but rather players busting their juices all over their buddies ala lebron, that type of gangbanging.

Everybody knows you don't g*ngbang until you're in your early 30s. They have no patience and they want everything handed to them easily.

    Reason no.2 :
Superstar calls have been around since day one of the nba. But Back then, Scotty brooks was allowed to be physical with john stockton. Now, You can't even look at a diva without the diva getting what he wants, a call from a stern minion.

Reason no. 3: It goes with no.2. The Stern minions officiating games that are easily deceived by the divas. Very wwf. All that is missing is the Chair to the back.

Reason no.4: Purposely making the post game obsolete.

Reason no. 5: The fake glasses with no lenses.

Reason no. 6: Stern's smug face.

Reason 7: Rule changes that changed for everyone except the divas. Divas can still b**** and roll around the ground to complain about a call =/

Reason 8 : Getting rid of the hand check to increase scoring. The divas are truly fabulous, this is true. but why do they need extra help to score their points? Jordan is correct..he would score 100 in today's game.

reason no. 9: while it's great that the dancers have sluttied up, the mascots are out of control. They take away attention from the dancers!

It has become far and away the most lop-sided and predictable professional sport. It's also the sport where "tanking" has become the most necessary and acceptable.

All of basketball's issues can be traced to one thing. Individual super star players have more power on and off the court than in any other sport.

Unfortunately there's nothing the NBA can do except take back power from the superstar players. They had the chance last off season and failed miserably. I would be happier if we were still in a lockout right now.
