I was impressed with him at Arkansas too. Knucklehead or not. I don't hold that against Manziel, so I won't hold it against Mallet. He will cost us a significant draft pick, but as long as his contract is easily escapable, I say go for it. You really couldn't ask for a better situation in terms of giving Mallet a chance to succeed... a guy that was groomed in an O'Brien style offense, drafted by O'Brien, coming here to be coached by and lead O'Brien's team. I'm as comfortable with that risk as I would be drafting any other QB. Plus, if we get to take Clowney, then all the better.
And a lot of those losing seasons the 49ers had was with Alex Smith. A QB they took with the #1 pick when they had so many holes... The Rams and Detroit are two other examples amongst many others. And I NEVER said anything about a quick turnaround. I already said I believe it's going to take this new coaching regime a year or two to clean up the mess the last regime made (just like what Kubiak had to do). But you're not debating with me, you're debating with history. And going back to 1990 out of the 14 QBs taking with a #1 pick only 3 of them made it to the super bowl and only 2 of them have rings... So what do you think the exception to the rule is...???
And speaking of Hasselbeck... Seattle got him off another team's bench and he helped them get to a super bowl. Both him and Aaron learned behind Farve (just like Steve Young learned behind Montana). New England is arguably the best ran organization in the NFL and they had Tom Freaking Brady in his prime but instead of drafting a WR or offensive lineman they spent a VALUABLE 3rd round pick on Mallet who was considered first round talent and he's been sitting up there for 3 years watching Brady learning in the system that O'Brien will probably run. So heck yea I would be happy with Mallet and he could probably help us get to where we want to be faster than spending a #1 pick on Teddy or Johnny. If Luck or Cam was in this draft _ different story but they're not...
That's 21% making a Superbowl and 14% winning one. Of all the QB's drafted after the first pick, how many made it to a Superbowl and what percentage is that? Do you think it's higher or lower than 21%?
Exactly! The 49ers old regime's mistakes haunted them for years to come. All the way from 2005 till last year, it haunted them. A stupid mistake of choosing Smith over Aaron Rodgers set the team back 10+ years. But just because one stupid front office makes a mistake on evaluating QBs doesn't mean another front office 14 years later will make the same mistake with that same pick with an entirely different draft class. You have yet to look at the percentages of how many starting caliber QBs have come out of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds. Lets get thru that before you worry about SB winning/playing QBs. Just because one QB found a way into a great circumstance and succeeded doesn't mean every one will. Matt Flynn learned behind a current Super Bowl winning QB and future HOFer at that, yet he still went full circle thru teams and ended back where he started, being that awesome QBs apprentice. Cam was not the highest rated QB in his draft class by any means. Supposed experts pegged Nick Fairley and Marcell Dareus as possible #1 overall picks. After the combine people find out what their prospects can and can't do. That's not to say that any of the 3 top of this class can't do that but what we've already seen on the field is evidence enough to see that we will and should take 1 QB and the top of the draft.
Guys look, Tom Brady was drafted in the 6th round. He has won 3 Super Bowls and won 5 AFC championships, making him the most winningest QB in NFL playoff history. Therefore the Texans have to draft their QB in the 6th round! I mean that's a fact guys, you cant argue with that.
You make it sound somewhat appealing. I go one direction, then another. Glad I don't have to make the decision; it's a tough one. If you are right, hero; wrong, a goat.
That's an amazing chance of making the Super Bowl! Considering, without any other adjustments history says pick a QB one overall and you have a 1/5 chance of making the Super Bowl - there's so many teams in the league which makes it even better!
I went to look for info about Mallet, because I dont know how he plays. so I found this article on the last postseason game this year. http://blog.masslive.com/patriots/2013/08/jury_still_out_on_ryan_mallett.html FOXBOROUGH – Everything was looking good for Ryan Mallett. After a shaky start to the preseason, he settled into a zone early Thursday night against the New York Giants during the New England Patriots' preseason finale at Gillette Stadium. He had no issue squeezing the ball into tight windows and appeared competent on short throws, his Achilles heal since entering the league three seasons ago. On New England's third drive, Mallett appeared to put it all together for the first time this preseason when he completed 4 of 5 passes to take the Patriots down to the 4-yard line. But it all came apart on the next play. Working on the left side of the field, rookie wide receiver Aaron Dobson managed to free himself and broke the back corner of the end zone, creating enough space for him to go up and over cornerback Prince Amukamara for a jump ball. But instead of putting it where only Dobson could get it, or a spot where he could get it at all, Mallett threw the ball low, into the arms of Amukamara The play ended up coming back after a replay determined that Amukamara's hand landed out of bounds, which allowed the Patriots to tie the game at 7-7 following a George Winn run. But making good on the mulligan means nothing this time of year. The mistake was made, further illustrating the inconsistency that has marred Mallett's game since he entered the league as a 2011 third-round pick The stats show that Mallett put together, unquestionably, the best performance of his career. He completed 10 of 16 passes for 117 yards with a touchdown. His line was blemished by an interception, but Dobson will likely receive the scorn of his coaches during the film review for failing to make a play and allowing the ball to ricochet off his chest. The performance pushed his final line to 42 of 76 (55.2 completion rate) for 447 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Juxtaposed with other seasons, Mallett took a step forward from last August, when he completed 33 of 67 passes for 300 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, but his rookie preseason remains the standard (36 of 63, 57.1 percent, 357 yards, one touchdown and one interception). Does that mean that Mallett is a lost cause, that this is as good as he can become? No. It means that he's still developing and trying to adapt to New England's offense. The truth is, with his contract set to expire after the 2014 season, Mallett probably won't be around long enough to become Tom Brady's heir apparent. At this point, the best New England can hope for is to maximize Mallett's value for a future trade. And the good news is that Thursday night was the most comfortable he's looked in a Patriots uniform. Though the strong-armed quarterback often struggles with his accuracy and decision-making when throwing short passes, he managed to connect on a number of those balls against the Giants. When he was given the opportunity to air it out, which is the strong suite of Mallett's game, he shined by delivering a perfect ball on a 40-yard strike to Josh Boyce down the left sideline that went for a touchdown. Here it is, the 40-yard TD that Mallet threw in that game: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap2000000236110/Ryan-Mallett-40-yard-TD-pass
So you think Rodgers would have been what he is today if he would have landed in San Francisco with with the coaching staff Smith had instead of Green Bay with Mike McCarthy...? What if Alex Smith landed with McCarthy who is a good QB coach and play caller and got to learn behind Farve and take over a team who Farve himself said was the best he's ever played on...? Alex might not have been a bust because we saw him look much better with Harbough and Andy... Those guys had different circumstances. Speaking of Andy Reid. He made a lot of QBs look good. See what he did with Vick. And he had other QBs who played and did good when McNabb got injured and would go to other teams and look bad. Kobb for example only looked good with Andy... Just like Matt Flynn only looked good with McCarthy... Circumstances... Joe Montana was a 3rd round pick and Steve Young was a first round bust and they landed with Bill Walsh who is one of the greatest offensive innovators in the NFL. Circumstances... Farve was a joke in Atlanta but became a God in Green Bay with help of Holmgren. And Holmgren won games with Hasselbeck as well. Rich Gannon and Brad Johnson with John Gruden.. Circumstances... Kurt Warner set the world on fire in St Louis with Martz. Went to the Giants and he suxked. Went to Arizona and got with Wisenhunt and he's good again. Circumstances... Luck had Bruce Arians his first year, Foles had Andy his first year and now has a great play caller in Chip, Kapernick has Harbough _ circumstances. Look what Josh McCown did when he was playing for Cutler who both looked good under Trestman. Drew Brees has Payton (and I believe he worked with Romo too). Tom Brady wasn't throwing the ball all over the field with Charlie Weis when New England was winning super bowls. They won with defense and kicking field goals. Brady didn't start breaking records until O'Brien landed on that staff. You can't pick and choose circumstances for one QB to support your argument. It's always about circumstances, situations, timing, and some luck.. But the common denominator with good to great QBs regardless of when they were drafted and the thought of them coming out of college is a majority of them had good to great QB coaches and or play callers with good schemes. The percentages say a good QB coach with a good system and play calling can make a good productive QB out of QBs who may not have been considered the best coming out of college. And I believe O'Brien is one of those kind of coaches. And Mallet was considered 1st round talent. So why do you turn your nose up at the idea of bringing him here....??? They considered him first round talent which is important to you so why the problem with him when many say we just need someone better than Schaub.
surprised this thread has reached 8 pages on a backup QB that there haven't even been substantiated rumors on. Personally, I'm not a Mallet fan. But if they get him for a 6th or 7th, I'd be ok with it. Would still want to draft someone and have a competition
McCarthy was the offensive coordinator in SF for Alex Smith's rookie season. People happen to occupy the QB coach position when there is a good QB and suddenly they are the ones making the QB's. Correlation does not imply causation. I think people mostly overblow the value of a QB coach beyond basic competence. Aaron Rogers is a good QB because he's a good QB, not because of any mojo or voodoo by a QB coach.
Yea but I said if Smith would have landed IN Green Bay with McCarthy with him calling plays there. Getting to learn for three years and taking over a good team that Farve said was the best he's ever played on, his story may have been different. Steve Young didn't start off in San Francisco you know. Of course the QB has to have talent and for the most part they all do. But you can spin it how you want to. The point still stands.

The Houston Texans and the New England Patriots are reportedly brewing a blockbuster trade, one involving Ryan Mallett and the Texans' second round pick, a source close to situation reported last week. In the wake of Bill O'Brien's hiring as the new Texans head coach, the ball club's front office appears to be determined to get him the kind of quarterback that fits his system. According to NFL insider Gil Brandt, the Texans are reportedly trying to pull off a trade with the Patriots, as they look to send their second round pick for upcoming 2014 NFL Entry Draft to the Pats for the 6"6' pocket passer Mallett. "O'Brien likes big QBs. I could see #Texans trying to trade with #Patriots for Mallett, going diff direction in draft," NFL Insider Gil Brandt posted on his Twitter account. discuss..
You need a link. Discuss. Also, it looks extra shady when you don't include the name of the "news source" you are copy and pasting from. The Bill Ingram's of the world make **** up out of thin air 24/7.
