I am on Linkden and it hasn't gotten to toxic.......yet. No FB, Instagram, X or Reddit and I don't consider this site Social Media. I do like to watch You tube videos and even that can get you down a rabbit hole at times. I just see to many lies out there and people believe that ****, I have one lady in my office who likes to scream out loud anytime a new conspiracy theory comes up on her FB site. As another poster mentioned, free speech is great but dam, most posts are just misinformation or flat out lies and as much as I don't like to say people are dumb but like the lady in my office, they fall for it every time and then when its debunked they rarely go back and apologize or bring it up again. I have enough issues in real life, I don't need to compound it by reading all the lies and getting my blood pressure up.
Because I’m old I use FB and keep in touch with a bunch of friends on FB who I also interact with offline. I’m obviously here. I watch a lot of YouTube and have YouTube stuff on the background frequently. I also have a YouTube channel that I’ll make content for. I have linked in and almost never use it. I was on a couple of discord servers including Clutchfans a few years ago and gave up on those. Just couldn’t get in the format and for the Clutchfans ones at least could get the pretty much the same content as here. Don’t feel the need to go on X as I see plenty of tweets, xeets whatever from other sources. Seemed too much work to insta as FB and no interest in TikTok.
Guy on the radio this morning: "We're never going to advance as a society. Turns out hooking us all up together was a terrible idea."
Oh yeah, I do use YouTube a lot, too. For hobby stuff, some Rockets stuff, general knowledge/science/math stuff. I probably would miss it the most out of all the social media apps, tbh. Which is amazing since when YouTube first came out, I said to myself "who the hell wants to watch other people's home videos? So dumb." Clearly I'm not good at this.
Social Media reminds us that we REALLY don't want to be a race of Telepaths Facebook - Youtube - some but very little instagram/Tiktok I have so many people sending me things to watch and some is legit entertaining but It is generally for entertainment purposes only I take everything with a grain of salt the size of the Rock of Gibraltar I guess we can count LinkedN but i don't use that much either I guess I should look at the grand list of social media Rocket River
"I don't like long videos" Hell yeah. If it's more than 3-5 minutes I don't watch it. I don't need some rando's giant head in the corner of the screen jibberjabbering at me.
It's rare I watch a video longer than 20 minutes People are getting shorter and shorter attention spans Not a bad thing . .. but it is becoming more and more of a thing Rocket River
I don't really use LinkedIn, but that thing was turning into nothing more than advertising and self-help posts that looked like "Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy" as well as probably BS posts used to generate engagement. Eventually I couldn't tell 30-40% of what I was reading from some random Facebook post. There was still some good, actual work-related stuff you could learn from on there, though.
