I just wish Collin Powell would run. I think he would make a great president, and break a lot of barriers that should be broken. DD
Madmax, now that we are at war, many people support it because our troops are fighting. At the beginning of Bush's push for war how many people supported it just because they supported Bush?
I agree with you 100% on this one. I just don't think he wants the job, unfortunately. National politics is a meatgrinder, and that to me is why so many qualified people don't run. They don't want their lives being put under the microscope.
Chance, it's clear to me from reading your posts (and listening to your songs) that you're an intelligent guy with a good sense of humor. Maybe that's why I find myself continually surprised by your seemingly absolute faith in the most broadly painted stereotypes of people on the left of the political spectrum. Continual references to hair length, innapropriate attire, etc... pepper many of your posts. And you throw around the term "tree hugger" like it was going out of style (which it did, BTW, about 30 years ago). Just as the right is not made up of an army of Pat Robertsons and Rush Limbaughs, neither is the left composed entirely of hippie slackers who waste their days smoking pot and, uh, hugging trees. In our day-to-day lives, we're probably a lot like you -- we have jobs, own homes, have families and care deeply about our country. The only difference is some of our core beliefs. That's it. I've seen posts where you say you have friends on the left. I wonder if you say these kinds of things to them. If you do, I wonder if they are truly your friend. And if you don't, I wonder why you would say them repeatedly on this BBS.
My left minded friends dress differently I use the word tree hugger to narrow the scope of the group I am addressing. When I watch footage of the protests I can't help but notice the attire of the protesters. I stand by my comments. I am generally not talking about the liberally minded citizens that live their day to day lives in a similar fashion to you and I. I am talking about, and I will use the word again, pathetic looking souls that seem to protest just to protest disrespective of contraindicative proof. I respect everyone's opinions provided that they are well thought out. I find it hard to believe that a 19 year old Evergreen student has been raised in an environment that allowed for him or her to choose their political stances and know what the hell they are b****ing about. So when I see these Evergreenees regurgitate Vietnam era catch phrases I can't help but laugh and not take them seriously. No Blood for Oil? Come on... Contrarily when I see a lady in a business suit that lost a son in the 9/11 attack tell her story and why she is unsupportive of the war I do listen to her side. I do respect her opinion and I assure you that she is being effective in persuading people to share her views unlike the hippy tree hugger. As always, I enjoy the parry with the liberal constituents on this board.
Good question. The media is cautious not to show them. They seem more interested in showing the more 'shocking' and hippy-looking protesters. I guess I would be more inclined to think of them like I think of the lady i mentioned in my post. I respect them more than the punk kids. I am more inclined to listen to their point of view. I would certainly entertain a debate with them much more than an unchangeable tree hugger. Look if we get through this whole thing and there are no WMDs I will be the first to feel stupid. If it turns out that Iraq was not a harbour for terrorists I will be the first to denounce my stance. If I was ever to be pulled to the dark side it would be because of a respectable contributor to society, not a hippy kid. Good question...
Madmax, Nice thread. I think this war, more than many other major US policy decisions, is based on trust. There's a lot of trust required to follow this administration in this tricky business about hidden weapons, covert links to terrorism, etc. I would hope everybody agrees to some extent on that. So then we have an automatic bias for political allegiances. If someone liked Bush enough to vote for him, that person is more likely to trust him. If, however, someone voted against Bush because that person *already* did not trust Bush and his colleagues, then the evidence will always be seen with a huge grain of salt. So that's my take on why this seems even more partisan than ever. Of course, there will be many exceptions. By the way, I am NOT looking to start a "omigod! only a stupid hippie could not believe this evidence!" versus "omigod! some fo of the so-called evidence has already been proven to be bogus!" yell fest. We've done that in about 186 threads so far.
Funny, a lot of those hippie KIDS are probably high school and college students who in a few years will be just regular people in society with regular jobs.
Chance obviously had major hots for some hippie chick who would not even glance at him. I think if he'd just share the story of that rejection, he'd feel a lot better. Chance? ...
Oh wait .. it all makes sense now. She left him for a tree! Hence, the derogatory tree-hugging references. He's pining away for her and she's getting it on with a pine. Bummer. No wonder so many guys here hate trees. Competition.
I hate trees because they make me nervous. I grew up in Amarillo where trees were few are far between... so you could keep an eye on 'em.
pine? ... No wonder Chance is hurting. I wouldn't want to get dumped for a sap seeping weakwood like that. If I got dumped for a Live Oak or a Maple, I think I could eventually recover.
I think he expresses his feelings better through music. So, what are the chances of a song about the hippie girl rejection.
I always felt the same way too. He would be way too old at the age of 70 when he would be able to run for president 7 years down the road. I voted for Bush but like MadMax I also cringe everytime he is speaking and think that the US would be better served with a change next term. I agree with the war however and support our president while he is in office. To do otherwise is unpatriotic IMO.
Isn't more like 5 years down the road? In 2008? Coincidentally, 2008 will be the first year I will be eligible to run for President. I mean, I'm not announcing yet, but who knows......
