Uhhhh.... or they simply have a different roster this year, major injuries, the West is improved, and talent decline-

Memphis - No Gasol for first half of the season, major decline from guys like Prince, etc.
Denver- No Gallo, no Iggy, Koufas, Brewer, and McGee injured

Think about this and tell me with a straight face that coaching would have created some miracle with these rosters. All things considered, its a miracle they even have .500 records. Might be that they actually UPGRADED their coaching situation to be a .500 team in the West.

I'm not sure if you know it, but if we have a better record than them, we will get home court in the first round even if their seed is better. Just wanted to clear that up, incase your "can't overtake" meant "can't have home court"

The last time the Rockets had a better record at this point was in 1996-1997 when they were 32-12. They lost in the Western Conference Finals.

Before that: 1993-1994 they were 33-11 and they won the NBA Finals.

Before that: 1985-1986 they started 30-14 and lost in the NBA Finals.

One last stat: 1995-1996 they had the same record... 29-15. They lost in the Western Conference Semifinals.

Considering all of the injuries and Asik drama, I'd say they are doing pretty well. It's funny looking at all of the bickering sometimes considering how well they are doing in the context of the franchise history.

One encouraging note, Rockets have been really injured and have seemed to start to gel a little at this point in the season, while the 93-94 Rockets, despite being 33-11 had lost 10 of their last 21 after starting the season 22-1.
