Marshall Faulk COULD be in Emmitt's class when he is done, but he still has another 5+ great seasons or so more to rival Barry and Emmitt as the best backs since Campbell and Payton.

You have to be kidding about Bettis. He never has been, NOR EVER WILL BE, close to Emmitt Smith caliber. That is more off base than saying D Rob or Ewing was in Olajowon's class. The other great back in this period is Davis (Terrell Davis was far better than Bettis could have dreamed of being). But he was only a great for a couple of years, and even then it was't like Davis was Gale Sayers or Bo Jackson (personally, I think few really recognized how dominant Jackson was when he stepped on a football field) "brief shining star great".

I didn't forget Gale Sayers. But again he only played what 5 years. No way in hell Marcus Allen or Franco Harris should be mentioned in the same breadth as Emmitt, not quite as bad as the Bettis case, but the former are 2nd tier. And from someone who watched TD and Emmitt, TD was the better college player but Emmitt was the more complete pro player. Calvin Hill would be a more interesting comparison but Emmitt stayed around the top of the league for far longer.

Cowboys fan since I was 4 (a little before I was a Rockets fan). I never understood the peni*, I mean Cowboy, envy from the Houston area fans. Butt Adams made his fortune off the city and then screwed it, and some folks still routed for the Tennesse Bubblin Crude over the likes of the Cowboys. Cowboys never were hated by the Oilers like the Steelers, Bengals and Browns either.

You could fit an actual bus through the holes Smith got to run through, so I'm sure "the bus" would've been able to be just as effective as Smith in the same conditions. Wasn't Marcus Allen benched for like 2 of his productive years? Seems like he'd be the career TD leader if that didn't happen. I just can't see you saying all of this if Allen and some of these other guys got to run behind the lines Smith did.

I think this is a chicken and egg argument. The OLine masks just how good a running back Smith was---and at the same time---Emmitt looks better on account of the OLine that he had...

    What did I just say?

The other backs do just as well behind the Pittsburgh lines. The Bus isn't anything that special IMO.

Marcus Allen played on winners most all his career as well. He may never has been on as talent depleted offenses as Emmitt has the last few years. Emmitt was better than Marcus in both their peaks, and Emmitt was effective for longer, the case between those to is closed.

My respect for Emmitt Smith has grown the last few years. Aikman wasn't that good the last few years he played, but Emmitt still wracked up 1000 yard seasons. Larry Allen is still fabulous, but the rest of that line is mediocre, now.

I'd place Smith as a Top 10, but not Top 5, running back. I don't think he's oen of the Top 10 most "talented" backs ever, but career longevity and consistency has to count for something.

I'm pretty sure Marcus Allen's career numbers would've been more impressive had he not been benched for those years for not getting along with the owner. And Scar, the case is never closed, until I say so. ;)

Also, rushing for a thousand yards isn't a big deal.

Btw....how can you be a fan of anything when you're 4 years old? That's a bit odd. There's a lot of things I'm sure I did when I was 4 that I probably don't do now. I used to like the Cowboys too, when I was like 7. But then I got smarter, and realized that I grew up in Houston, not Dallas. I used to play with action figures when I was 7, too, but I stopped.

Dreamshake, I can't stand OJ, but he's definitely a first tier running back. He was big and fast. He was faster then Michael Bennett, And Tomlinson ever wsas. He was the anchor of USC's 4 x 100 record holder.

All of this stuff I hear about guys running 4.3's, well, OJ ran a 4.5. I would be shocked if any RB's run faster than him.

Emmitt Smith is a warrior and anyone who says he is overratted is obviously jealous of his accomplishments.
This is a guy that when he came into the league was characterized as too small and too slow. He's played with pain, and he always palys well in big games: Remember the Giants game they needed to make the playoffs he played with a separated shoulder? That my friend is not overrated that is a warrior.
Yes he did benefit by the talent around him but he was the best player on the most dominant franchise of the 90's.

As for Aikman, I don't really care. Aikman is an idiot for even considering coming back. His brain is scrambled and he should concentrate on taking care of his family. Troy was a very good QB but if he goes to DC more power to him. He won't finish the season there or anywhere else.

I when I was 7 or so I used Star War's action figures to play football with. Hans Solo was the best QB of course, and a lot more like Roger than Troy;). Football and Star Wars, Joeseph Campbell would have had a field day interpreting that, talk about two American traditions fused in a 7 year old.

Also Freak, much of the reason Marcus's carries were reduced were simply because Bo Jackson was better when they both played for the Raiders. Of course when he played Bo was a phenom like few others, nobody since him IMO, Emmitt, Marshall, Barry, has as much talent. You probably had to go back to Earl to find someone that sickly talented as a runner.

gr-8, I agree with you about Simpson. Top 4 (ahead of Barry or Emmitt) in my book, on the football field of course .
