"Stop, and think it through" - my child's kindergarten school mantra I'm cool now... Mario will be exciting to watch,...In a perfect world we would have all 3 of the choices, but building a line on both sides is key to progression.
I don't know about Houston's fan attendance and tv ratings, etc. - but picking Bush would have definitely roused up a lot of interest and excitement. Could the Texans have saved some money by trading their pick to the saints? They might have gotten another pick in return and could probably have paid Mario less $$ (since he would no longer be the first overall).
Why? So the Saints would have to pay even more to Bush? There was never a possibility of us trading with the Saints.
1. The Texans wanted either Bush or Williams. They could not trade down and get either of these guys. Young was never an option, even if they had been given a fantastic package to trade down. D'Brick, scarily enough, wasn't seriously considered because they felt good about their line and they knew they could probably grab a couple linemen in Day 1 anyway (I think they were pretty psyched that Winton was there at 66) 2. Bush should have lost about 7 million for being drafted #2, but I have a sneaky suspicion that his agent will ask the Saints to give RB similiar money to what MW is making 3. Until Clemens signed we are doomed to millions of Mario vs. Bush vs. Brick vs. Cutler conversations
Um its written by John Mcclain the biggest Texan Homer there is in the news industry lol How about getting some national articles and lets compare hahah
John McClain was on SportsRadio610 yesterday as usual, but he had an interesting tidbit. Someone called in asking about the Cowboys and it reminded him of a story written in a Dallas newspaper by a journalists he knows pretty well. Apparently, Bill Parcells went to a Rangers' game last week. Mark DeRosa of the Rangers came up to the Tuna and asked how the hell the Texans could pass on Reggie Bush. He responded that he likes Bush, but Mario Williams is the best player in the draft. I just thought it was interesting coming from someone of his stature. McClain also talked about this yesterday saying that Bush's agent is trying to finagle the deal to actually be bigger than Mario's. Apparently, he doesn't like the impression the he couldn't get a deal done with the Texans, so he wants to get a bigger deal and say, "see, I can get a 1st pick deal done." And, Benson (Saints' owner) has said do whatever to sign him. He may be a Texan-homer, but he has been on the record that they should be picking Vince Young and making a big mistake by passing on him. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft06/columns/story?columnist=smith_michael&id=2419503 http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12471820/
John has flip-flopped so many times on who the Texans were going to take it wasn't even funny. He really doesn't know anything until the final decision is made which in this case it wasn't made until the day before the draft. All he does is repeat the latest thoughts of one of his insiders. "There is no way that the Texans are going to pass on Bush for VY....." to "There is no way that the Texans are going to pass on VY........" to "The Texans have ruled out VY altogether, Bush is a lock......" to "The Texans aren't going to take Williams, they're using him as leverage...." to "The Texans are negotiating with Williams agent, and apparently they are serious" to "The Texans are going to take Williams, it's a done deal."
huhhh, the article is talking about how Mario fits better for Texans then Bush. What you presented is what Mclain was hearing around the Texans. Like Texans have ruled out VY and Bush is a lock. We all thought that Bush was a lock. These are things he is hearing. In the article he is actually telling you why Mario fits better.
It's all after the fact. I like John. He's a great guy. My problem with him is he is a polly parrot. He is not forward thinking. All he does is go to his sources and then repeat what they tell him to us after the fact. At least Richard Justice gives us an opinion and possibilities for the future.
woa, I think you have that backwards. Richard Justice is THE MOST flip-flopping journalist I've seen or read. He has that reputation as such around this board. He was on the radio this week as usual. He first went on about how Mario was a great pick, defense wins championships, how the Texans have real guts to go against the grain, etc, etc. No more than 10 minutes later, after a few callers bashed the Texans again, he completely changed his tune going on about how they passed on a sure thing and started cracking jokes about it. Justice has NO credibility what so ever and opinions sway with what the general public is thinking at the moment. And, McClain certainly reports what his sources tell him, but I've listened to him twice a week since the Rose Bowl, and he has CLEARLY stated that they SHOULD take Vince because of a multitude of reasons. He said on more than one occasion that they will draft him because they will see the same things he does. And, how in the world would he say they will take Vince based on Texans' sources, when they ruled out drafting him from the start? Anyway, I can't believe I added to this petty argument since its about a couple of freaking local journalists and not anything real important. But, oh well. It's Sunday morning and I'm watching the same kiddy movies for the 120th time with my 2 yr. old while the wife is away, so I'm BOORRED!!!!
im not buying that for a second. the pick was bob mcnairs. he didnt wanna pay bush. thats what it came down to.
The pick was Bob McNair's - but as we saw when he hired Reeves, he knows his limits as a football person and will respect the opnions of his football people. Kubiak and the coordinators, with input from Reeves, were in charge of this pick., and I think Kubiak though DeAngelo Williams was just as good as Bush (which is why they tried to trade up and get Williams).
I can't believe, with all the stuff that has come out since last Friday night, that people would still believe money was the issue. It's been reported on numerous occasions that they offered the same exact contract to both players and that the contract numbers were right in line with what Bush and his agent were asking for. People need to wake up and start thinking that the Texans' brass actually believes Mario is the best player and best fit for the team now and for the long run.
No one sacks Young for 3 times. You'll be lucky to get him for 1 time in a game. I've seen every game the guy has played in his 3 years at UT and he is one elusive QB. It always looks like he's about to get hit but - whoops, he's gone. Pure excitement everytime he touches the ball. The Texans screwed up when they didn't take him or Bush. Talk junk all you want about Vince -- he'll torch the Texans for some nice little payback. This guy looooves it when people diss him, and the Texans dissed him bigtime.
