    Isn't that against the law?[/QUOTE]

    The SC states:

"At the outset, if a person in custody is to be subjected to interrogation, he must first be informed in clear and unequivocal terms that he has the right to remain silent."

Arresting officers only need to read Miranda if they are interrogating the suspect.

That doesn't take away the fact that you still have the right to remain silent.

You're entitled to your own opinion obviously.
I know I am held to a higher standard.
It's be shocking to my peers if I was caught stealing something.
    Nevermind, think what you want.

And you're right. You don't have to be a rocket surgeon to be an officer.
You must have a sound mind capable of using common God given sense and you must be able to use discretion.

My dept. requires a bachelor's degree or 4 years of not less than an honorable condition discharge from the military.

It's very hard to find good candidates because of the police corruption mentioned by some of you. They dig deep in to your past.
But it's hard to find good candidates because most people that apply have smoked a little pot. Most have driven drunk. Most people don't have the highest credit scores. Most people don't have clean driving histories.

And as I have said, there was no reason I am aware of I shouldn't have been treated with respect in those other situations. They need to show some reserve until they know the entire situation.

You may not think it happens that often but it does. The problem is that those policemen are just being LAZY. They pull people like me over because they think there's a high chance of finding small amounts of mar1juana, or an intoxicated driver, or guns because that's the stereotype.

I don't think its racist as much as it is laziness. I don't hate all cops but those ones should have their badges taken away for good.

In a traffic stop though? You may the right to be silent, but doing so brings suspicion on you that likely wasn't there before.

Just picture that for a moment. A cop pulls you over for going 10 miles over the speed limit and you tell him you are invoking your right to silence. That's something out of a comedy.

FYI, the right to remain silent is a little freely used. It's really a right against self incrimination. Total silence (while still an option) isn't really what the law intends and will definitely make you look like you are hiding something.

You obviously don't have to do that either.

    Where do you work? Mayberry?

I agree and disagree with some of that (without having watched the video).

On a stop, I remembered the civil "I have no idea, do your duty" approach. The cop kept ON asking if you knew what I did cuz for some reason he wanted me to "fess up". He got MORE pissed cuz I wouldnt tell him what he wanted to hear (he thought I was trying to evade him when I wasnt. He was following me without me knowing). It worked, he worked me into slight frustration cuz I was thinking whats it MATTER if I acknowledge it, just do what you're going to do anyway. But nope, had to have me validate my offense for some reason....

Another time (yeah I do dumb crap on the road), this instance goes with the point of this thread - I tried the cooperative "yep you got me, I knew what I was doing but hear me out -" and the public servants working for us just looooved some of that. They werent hearing out anything. Handcuffs and car search followed...

Which goes into what WWR said about not needing a warrant to search the vehicle. All they need is an offense like expired stickers, and its free reign to search the vehicle for drugs and weapons and stuff (No I didnt have any of that on me). If a clunker looking car driving in the hood looks suspicious, all the cops need is for one of the lights to not work or something to search the passener areas.

Its a might as well not talk to the police, along with "NEVER" talking to them.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen. I'm not naive. There are two extremes though. Those who have never been the victims of police persecution (that's a strong word, but let's run with) think it never happens, and those who have had it happen think it happens a lot more than it does.

It really is an infrequent thing. It does happen. There a racist bigots and lazy jerks in the uniform. But it isn't a large percentage of them. Most police officers are just doing their job and if they pull you over they just want to get the ticket over with and get you on your way and get themselves on their way.

Believe me, the large percentage of cops are not there to give you grief, persecute you, bust up minorities, etc. They just want their paycheck just like most Americans.

I agree - was just pointing out that you don't need to be read your rights in order to use them.

I'm sure he doesn't want someone to track him down. I don't know what his department's policies are, but I'm sure he isn't interested in any reprimand.
