i know which dept. u work at WWR

anyways, phew! I just had a close call right now. I'm going down some road where people tend to speed(limit is 35). For some reason, my conscience tells me to slow down because at this time of the day cops like to hide with their radar. Anyways, i slow down to 35, then this car behind me passes me up. So right then and there a cop comes out of no where to the street, tells both of us to stop and calls the other car to the side. Phew! I knew i wasnt speeding so i was good. :D

    I found it Spiffy:

ยง 521.025. LICENSE TO BE CARRIED AND EXHIBITED ON
DEMAND; CRIMINAL PENALTY. (a) A person required to hold a
    license under Section 521.021 shall:
    (1) have in the person's possession while operating a
motor vehicle the class of driver's license appropriate for the
    type of vehicle operated; and
    (2) display the license on the demand of a magistrate,
    court officer, or peace officer.
    (b) A peace officer may stop and detain a person operating a
motor vehicle to determine if the person has a driver's license as
    required by this section.

The trooper in the police academy told us this is what allows there to be check points during spring break.

But to me that reads that you can stop people for the sole purpose to see if they have a DL.

Man...somehow this thread has made me angry at cops. But I don't want to be, I like police officers.

    I'm out.

Maybe so. But here's the problem I have. Your justification above...completely negates what you said earlier about cops being held to a higher standard. They supposedly have more integrity, are more ethical, etc.. ("it's really tough to get the job" and all that)

That's great. But now you can't go back and compare that same job to all these other jobs because...cops are supposedly held to a higher standard. And if that's the case, I don't think they should get these "perks" as you call them that other jobs get.

We expect more from them, and if we give them authority (and you justify that authority by saying they are held to a higher standard), then they should live up to those expectations and not do things like "cops take care of cops". Yes, it is unethical. Yes, it is wrong. At least according to the letter of the law. Which is everything when you're held to a higher standard.

I'm sorry to come off as mean, but the hypocrisy is too apparent in my eyes..

This is something I have discussed in depth. I have had had some interesting conversations on it.

Put yourself in an officer's situation. Think of all the situations. What would you do?

Would you write other officers? There are officers who do.

Of course, you expect all this out of them, but still pay them even less than teachers.

Police officers couldn't be police officers without education.

Actually, in most places they could. Very low education requirements.

At the same time, teachers couldn't teach without civil order, so :p

The bottom line, though, is that both get paid for crap. At least teachers are only supposed to be normal human beings. Nobody expects more from them than from the average person. If you expect police to be some sort of uniquely trancendental super-ethical being, you should pay them accordingly.

Even with the relatively flimsy ethical standards, (which most people actually fail) most police departments routinely are able to recruit people for less than half of the number of positions they have available.

I don't know of any PDs that require less than a high school diploma.

I don't know if that's necessarily true. They could teach but would it be peaceful? Could they enforce students to attend? Probably not, they might be teaching less pupils but they could still do it.

True but who wants their taxes raised to do that? The majority of people don't.

Yes and the turnover rates are high as well.

    Depending on the department.

Officers aren't poor like they used to be. But it varies greatly depending on the department.

Jesus, I don't know what the hell is wrong with some of you.

There are perks to being a cop. This surprises you? I've got a Harris County Sheriff's Dept. Association sticker on my car because my friends dad was a cop. It has helped a time or two.

Some cops are assholes. This surprises you? The ratio of ******* cops to non-******* cops isn't any different than it is for any other profession. There are plenty of assholes on this BBS, just as there are assholes in every society. I don't like assholes, period, whether they're a cop, the teller at the bank, or a low-rent, don't-give-a-damn burger-flipper at the local fast food joint.

Think about what cops have to go through: at any point, they can be killed. Whether they get a call to a bank robbery, shooting spree, or just one of those "courtesy stops," they can be killed. Bye wife. Bye kids. I needed to pull someone over for a broken tail lamp, and I got shot and killed. I wouldn't imagine for a second that they wouldn't be a little tense at the very least. Its my job as a law-abiding citizen to do what I can to make them feel at ease and show them a little respect.

They put their lives on the line multiple times every f**king day "to protect and serve," and some of you are upset because one officer might let a fellow officer off for speeding or he might run a red light.

I've got hair damn near down to my ass. I look like a rebel pothead at the very least. I fit a profile, and I get it. I'm not going to get my panties in a bunch over it, either. I'd actually rather them profile me so as to skew the results for my fellow 'long hairs.' My car has been searched before. I also have plenty of problems with authority. I fully admit that. But I'm not going to pretend that I'm so naive as to be 'outraged' at some silly perceived injustice that occurs in every aspect of humanity.

Some of y'all really need to lighten up. Sheesh.

Wasn't it easier to just let them see you were clean and get on your way?

    Thanks for the post.

They should still obey the same laws then we do, idc if there perks or what not. Theres others professionals then have to risk their lives also.

You're absolutley right - that provision does exist in the transportation code. However, the courts have said it is illegal. It's been struck down, but the legislature hasn't gotten around to removing it from the books.

    You seem young..

If you were an officer you'd understand the brotherhood amongst the profession.

I agree. They should be paid more. But they should be held to that higher standard. (I also think teachers should be paid much more. But how to go about changing that..)
