Originally posted by Kim ... The Marines kick your ass, and is much tougher than the Corps, but they don't do that hazing crap. And it is hazing. Kicking ass to make you tougher has a purpose. Hazing doesn't. The marines were in trouble e fews years ago with a video where their pins were being punched into their chests. I'm happy here at A&M. That's all that matters to me. I'm sure I would've been happy at UT. All y'all Longhorns who hate A&M so much..whatever, I think that's just stupid. No hate here, but often disgust. When you have images of corp-leaders chasing people off a field with swords, or a competitors' band (The Mob) that had to run to the lockerrooms for safety and be carted away a few at a time in ambulances, and yes, nude, bound young men, you develop a disgust for some of this juvenile fervor. I think that you will realize that more aggies hate UT than the other way around, since they have more to be envious of.
Can you elaborate? Because if it's true that more Aggies hate Longhorns, I have a feeling its more because of the arrogant, condescending comments made by UT students and alumni than it is envy. I think the whole point of this thread is stupid. The title is "This is why I could never be an Aggie" and it refers to a hazing incident. I went to A&M four years and never once witnessed a hazing incident. So yes, this is a stupid reason not to go to Texas A&M. You're going to have to come up with something better. And, I don't recall any Aggies chasing people off the field with swords, but when fans from another school rush onto Kyle Field after a victory, the Aggie Corps members do chase them off the field (the swords thing is news to me). And I would say they have just as much of a right to push them off the field as the other team's fans have to run onto the field.
Let's face facts here people... Any college that has male cheerleaders wearing white garbage suits who squeeze their balls in front of 80,000 people on a Saturday afternoon just so they can yell loud is, well... ...a little freaky. -Love & Kisses- RMT University of Texas at Austin College of Communication Class of 1983
Yeah, UT is so much more diverse with Latino and Black enrollment under 5%. I believe the black population at UT is about 0.5% higher than A&M and about 1% higher in Latinos. Neither Texas school is representative of the Texas population. Both schools have been fighting minority enrollment problems for years.
I'm going to resist the urge to dispense with civility despite the fact that some of you are asking for it. I think the point of the initial post should be crystal clear to anyone not immediately looking for an excuse to defend Texas A&M. I could never be an Aggie because of the behavior of the Corps of Cadets and the tacit approval it receives from "red-ass" Aggie alumni. Just because you don't share approval of the Corps and/or are not a red-ass alumnus does not mean that neither of those things exist. We don't have an ROTC run amok on our campus, nor do we have any similarly unique university-sponsored problems. Saying "I could never be a Longhorn because of frat hazing" is stupid and irrelevant, because fraternities (and fraternity hazing) are not unique to Texas and are not viewed by Texas Exes as shining examples of the "UT experience" the way the Corps of Cadets is by the kind of Aggie alumni who think taunting by fans of opposing schools is akin to the last stand on Fiji. "Git out the bayonets boys, they're impugning our alma mater!" If the examples of Aggie reasoning here are representative of an A&M education, your entire liberal arts department should be fired. Heck, that would probably be viewed positively by a lot of Aggies.
The demographics at UT are roughly as follows: 68% White 15% Asian 12% Hispanic 5% Black So yes, THE UNIVERSITY is much more representative of the population than A&M. We're Texas. Also for those of ya'll not familiar with the sword incidents, let me tell the story. In 1995, after annihilating the Ags 51-15 at Gomer Pyle Field, some Horn fans rushed out to congratulate the players. Some corp members went crazy and attacked people with swords. Some of these people were girls who didn't know that the field is some kind of "memorial." As far as Aggieland goes, most people will be able to tell you that it's a backwards little town where people who think differently are not welcome. Where people who hold even moderate political views are often times described as "un-Amurican." What else can you expect for a school that built a scoreboard for a bunch of dead dogs, and where you can't walk on the grass or wear a baseball cap in a building.
Thoughts on Texas A&M... 1) They won't shut up. They have to go on about spirit, and old army, and red ass, and how bonfire represents the burning sensation they have in their urine to beat UT, and blah blah blah. Shut up. You start to get the feeling the entire school was built to spite UT. 2) Forget the fact that when the Texas Legislature back in the 1870's passed legislation to start a state university they also decided to have a subsidiary branch of the main school (University of Texas) that would teach agriculture and mechanics. Aggies love to say their school is older, from where they get that I don't now......the fact is, the State intended A&M to be a branch of UT. They are like the afterbirth from the original creation. Like Danny Devito in "Twins". 3) So they apparently have this complex, so much so, that they must devote their entire school to trying to prove to UT that they are just as good. All the while, nobody at UT denies that A&M is a good school, yet they won't shut up. So they write a fight song......about?....Texas, and how they want to beat them. They have a Fish Camp for freshman where they tell them how bad Texas is and how good A&M and all its traditions are. It is the world's largest known case of penis envy, and it is manifested in everything A&M does. 4) The people at A&M. Now we all have friends who went to A&M or are at A&M. There are some nice people there. However...there is the Corp. East Texas' answer to dreams of ROTC kids everywhere. For every boy scout who never learned to stop playing with his GI Joe Toys, there is the Corp. Now, forget the fact that A&M will actually let people with sub-par grades enroll if they agree to join the Corp. Forget the fact that the Corps looked like a Gestapo hate rally while beating down students on Kyle Field in 1995. Forget the fact that along with the numerous hazing charges that have been filed against them, and swept under the rug over the years, they just this past month have had one Corps member bring charges against another Corps member who apparently had been propositioning others for a little actual sodomy. Not only could I go on with more instances of idiocracy by these Khaki-clad-shaven-headed-dorks, I am sure each of you have your own stories. The point is: We all respect West Point, Annapolis, The Air Force Academy; however, nobody respects the Corp. I imagine they are kind of the laughing stock of the military world. Just because you dress like the Army, and try and act like the Army, does not make you the Army. People at A&M don't even respect these clowns. It is not cool to shave your head and dress up. Halloween is only supposed to be one day of the year. If you want to carry guns and beat up civilians, move to Israel. 5) It is even less cool to slobber on somebody's daughter on national television and call it a tradition. Dry humping 18 year old girls in the stands at football games is not cool. Not only is it not cool, it should be against the law. I know that in College Station, students are just prone to mount each other on the campus lawn, or in the middle of class, or anytime anything good happens you can just grab the girl sitting next to you and start sucking on her face. But everywhere else in the world, it is looked down upon. Especially if you are doing it on my TV. That is why we have moved the game from Thanksgiving. Because people across the nation were gagging on their turkey when in the middle of watching a football game, some boy scout is tongue thrashing some overweight co-ed during somebody's Thanksgiving dinner. We do not need to see burly women engaged in a suckfest every time your woeful offense manages to put points on the board. Some of these girls are in desperate need of a trip to the Clinique counter. Screw that, forget make-up, it is too late for that, just give them a veil. 6) "t.u." is not funny. It is NOT insulting. It is dumb. Just imagine if folks from Texas kept talking about M&A and giggling. That would not be funny. In fact, it would be r****ded. That's why UT fans don't do it. Please learn. 7) You want to lose the image of country bumpkins, of a people fond of sheep, of people that aren't stupid? Then quit building things that fall down.Quit chasing cheerleaders around with swords on national TV. Quit whooping in church. Quit whooping period. Quit putting up scoreboards for the enjoyment of dead mammals. Quit spending your Friday nights practicing how to yell. Quit telling rape jokes to reporters when you're running for Governor. When you are filling out season ticket renewals, and the form asks for your phone #, H & W, quit putting 258-3999, Height 6'3", Weight 185. Just, collectively, stop making asses of yourselves. Go to East Texas, tour every small town, and ask every red neck with a 5th grade education why they cheer for A&M and wear maroon. That is your fan base. This is why you are perceived by the educated masses as stupid. 8) Nobody cares if you think your band is better. They might be louder, they might march in neat little zig zags, but they have no musical ability. The point is, nobody cares who wins halftime. Quit getting geeked up about marching bands. I find it hard to believe you stood through your high school band's entire halftime performance. And why? Cause nobody cared then and nobody cares now. Plus, you can hear them fine sitting down even if you do care. Why is it cool all of a sudden now that you're in college? 9) Men should never let out high pitched whooping sounds. Perhaps the only justifiable situation in which this can be tolerated is perhaps during an anal probe. Oh wait...I understand now. 10) Dogs are not ladies. They don't look or smell like ladies. Dogs eat their own feces and should be treated accordingly. 11) Finally, College Station is an arm-pit of a town. Quit pretending that it is a great college town. It is a town and thereis a college there. That should be the end of this comparison. If you feel that life doesn't get any better than the Dixie Chicken, and enjoy being stuck in a never ending "Dukes of Hazard" episode, then move there. More importantly, don't move to Austin.....they are trying to create an educated, technological, and open minded population base. Austin is, and will continue to be, the birthplace and final resting place of all that is cool. As my friend Stephen Johnson once said: "If the world were ever to get an enema, College Station is where you would connect the hose." If you go to school at A&M, please don't be an Aggie. God Bless the Great State of Texas.
...still don't agree with your reasoning. Like I said, I went to A&M for four years and never witnessed anything like this. I had Corps members in some of my classess and I saw them walking on campus, doing drills early in the morning, etc. "Run amok on campus?" Give me a break. Do I agree with hazing or any other "extracurricular" activity corps members surely participated in while I went to school? No. Did the Corps affect me personally in any shape or form? Not by a long shot. But if you would never go to the university just because the Corps exists (eventhough it would more than likely have no effect on you whatsoever as a typical Texas A&M student) then I can respect that. But if all you think the Corps stands for is a bunch of undisclipined, hazing animals "running amok" on campus, its no wonder you have this low opinion of Texas A&M.
Baqui99, the game was only 16-6, but the sentiments are the same. A&M fans were upset that the UT fans were "disrespecting" the field and the memories of those who died for our country by stepping foot on it. They didn't seem to remember when some Aggies cut off the Horns at MEMORIAL Stadium.
A&M's student body according to US News: African-American: 2% Asian-American: 3% Hispanic: 9% Native American: N/A White: 83% International: 2% UT has more diversity and represents Texas more than A&M. --- All you non-Corps Ags can deny the Corps represents your school, but Nike sure likes to use "Sarge" on your apparel.
The Corps enjoy a much greater presence on television than they do on campus. The perception that the Corps have much influence on the rest of the student body at Texas A&M is out of line with reality. Any tacit approval by "red-ass" Aggies has been countered by the involvement of the University Police Department, and the Brazos County District Attorney's office. I guess we will just have to wait and see what transpires. Yes, A&M does have problems (including minority enrollment), but I'm not ready to condemn an entire university because of the actions of a few, who were clearly in violation of university regulations.
Baqui99, that is the biggest bunch of BS I've ever read. You should be ashamed for even posting that garbage. I hope this board isn't very indicative of the real world. Because all I see are a bunch of Longhorns taking cheap shots and stereotyping an entire school. I'm going to give your school the benefit of the doubt and I will not come to the conclusion that all Texas Longhorns are jerks, because I know that is not the truth. Yes, there are Aggies who hate Longhorns and their are Longhorns who hate Aggies. I use to think the Aggies' hatred ran deeper, but after reading some of these posts I'm having my doubts. Personally, I just enjoy the rivalry for what is: one of the best in all of college sports!!! All the hate and animosity between the two schools is something I don't want to have anything to do with.
Baqui, that walking on the grass and no hats in buildings is reserved for only the MSC, not the entire campus, which many ignorant people often mistake. MSC by the way stands for Memorial Student Center, which is actually a building dedicated to those who have fought and died for our country. Next time u rant and rave on something, know your facts. Nevertheless, the corp does not control me, nor the entire campus, so don't pigeon hole all of A&M thinking that we deserve the same criticism as a small number of over-zealous corp terds.
2%er here myself. I didn't think I could get into Texas and I never tried, boy do I regret that. I had like a c + average and 1240 SAT. I like the cheap tuition and the proximity to Houston, but damn is College Station is boring. I'm not going to try and defend anything that goes on here, but I don't know if I'm going to transfer. Then again, I think about the fact that people fight against racial diversity, people protested FOR the Vietnam war during the 60's, somebody wrote an article last week saying the Kyoto protocol is a conspiracy to redistribute our wealth to poorer countries. Yeah, the only thing I don't like is that I'm a Political Science Major and at Texas it is called Government. So unless I transfer out of state next year, does anybody at UT need a roommate?
The great school debate at its finest. I basically don't care any more what people say about A&M. I went there, got a good education, went to some football and baseball games, met my wife, got a job (over a couple of 'Horns) and am currently as happy as I've ever been. And no...even though College Station is no Austin (I admit Austin is a heck of a town), C.S. isn't horrible. Now I need to get back to work at my high-paying, technically cutting edge, finance job at the largest Computer company on the planet that my "crappy, hick, non-respected, sheep-loving, dog-saluting, yell-practicing, t.u. hating, redneck, ultra-conservative, cheerleader chasing, log-humping, hazing, whooping, Dixie chicken lovin, po-dunk" A&M degree got me straight out of school after 3 summer internships at equally large and profitable companies over several other qualified individuals from other Texas schools, including Tech, UT, and Rice. And no an Aggie didn't hire me, some dude from Princeton did. I've already waste enough time discussing this with people that don't know what they are talking about and refuse to believe that maybe, just maybe some of the misconceptions they have might not be true. By the way... I think that thing that Baqui posted is from Jim Rome, but I'm not sure. Is UT a good school..yes Is A&M a good school...yes Is Tech a good school...yes Is Baylor a good school...yes. Most Texas schools are just fine. If you have a good GPA from any of them you'll get a good job.
hmm......... still trying to figure out why i even applied to a&m when i had no intention of going there lol... now they still call and send me stuff less than 3 months before i start school at another school!.. i did consider UT though. because i thought for what i would be studying.. it would be a better academic fit.. although i ended up deciding not to go there either... go vandy 2006 lol.. even if it's in titans land.. grr
