the governments have tough laws, but it doesnt prevent the average citizen from telling you what he thinks of you. i suspect the tough (and sometimes ridiculous) laws were put in place to curb the citizenry's 'exuberance' towards immigrants.
I was being sarcastic. Obviously I have no actual problem with the guys name. Talk about overreaction.
This is America, lots of people from lots of countries have already come to this country throughout it's history and learned English but laziness is the New American way; so now immigrants are just assimilating into the culture by being too lazy to learn the language. The elementary school I went to as a kid now puts their announcements on their sign in Spanish. Hell the way it's going, I won't be pissed until they tell me I HAVE to learn Spanish....
I don't have a problem with it. If you're in America, you should be able and required to speak English in public facilities and places. This seems to be one of the only countries that doesn't have an official language.
Your stipulation is only fair if the restaurant is located in Mexico or another spanish speaking country.
I went to Calle Ocho in Little Havana (Miami) last weekend and saw this sign "Learn Spanish here!" I thought it was hilarious how that city turned into a Spanish-Speaking city. No wonder why people say, "don't move to Miami if you want to live in America" BTW, I have nothing against Spanish. Sooner or later, Houston's gonna turn into a Spanish-Speaking city. I guess I need to take more Spanish classes.
This is America. Free speech. You can speak whatever language you want. And this ignorant man can choose to take an order only in English if he wants to. But he shouldn't say he can because this is America, rather, because he can do whatever he wants.
No it's not. And you would only have to take Spanish classes if you plan on speaking to mono-lingual Spanish speakers regularly. Right now, the only mono-lingual Spanish speakers are immigrants. I doubt many people on here associate with them on a daily basis. If they do, then learn Spanish, if not, what do you have to worry about?
You don't. Find a translator or lose their business. It's simple. You don't have to involve flag waving and eagles.
So you refuse their business? Then you might get legal problems (again) A restaurant in Philadelphia being pro USA, the horror. Kiss my Amercian speaking ass.
Yeah, maybe, but why be a dick about it? Of course, I know your answer will be a dick one, so I'm obviously asking the wrong person.
Because nobody pays attention, let alone reacts to polite, subtle, or otherwise non-assholic tendencies anymore. To get your point across you have to be somewhat of a jerk/bully these days (or be a celebrity/millionaire (or both)). It's quite disheartening, really.
