Absolutely, what I was gonna say. Is almost saying people that that don't speak English blatantly disrespect its ways. But I guess he's free to have that opinion if he thinks that... sorry to get all into it... was looking more for non english speakers rather than racial demographics but that give a general idea
As a private business they guy can have whatever sign he wants. Its his call whether it will cost him business or not and in Philly probably not. If his business was Laredo that might be a different matter. I think the thread title is misleading though as it doesn't seem to refer to one particular situation but to a general sentiment. In regard to the general sentiment I think anyone should be able to speak whatever language then want in the US.
I just want the people who take my order at the drive-thru to speak English so they can quit screwing up my order.
What language was the U.S. constitution written in? What is the language in any Governmental or legal document? What is the language of all official state and national signage, laws, etc...? What is the language of all the major television networks and major city newspapers? What is the primary language spoken in school? . . . . I rest my case!
What language inspired our constitution? What languages did Americans speak before they became Americans? How many words do we use in the US in everyday language that are not English? What language does not evolve over years of influence from other cultures? What value do other languages being spoken here do to serve our world economy? Where would our country be if we were not integrated with other cultures with different languages? . . . I rebut your case. I think it is very valuable for any non-English speaker to learn English, but there are some very valuable citizens here in America that do not speak English. I have no desire to tell them to leave for something so superficial. Personally, I have trouble understanding British, Australian and Kiwi English speakers. They can speak to me clearly and I may not understand. What am I supposed to tell them? Learn to speak English again?
Has anybody here ever been to Geno's? They discriminate against anyone who doesn't order as quickly as possible. It is an establishment where you walk up to a window and order, then they call out your order when it is ready, and you pick it up at a second window. Their menus are on large plaques alongside the windows. I believe they have a sign on the menu that says something along the lines of "Have your order ready, use the terms on the menu, have your money in hand, no questions. If you don't follow these rules you will be sent to the back of the line." It even specifies that if you want a cheese steak with cheese and onions, you only need to say "Whiz, wit" and give them your money. The cooks, etc will talk trash to you while you are up there too - it's the farthest from a classy establishment; it has that dirty, Philly flair. When I was there, I saw a few drunkards get sent to the back of the line while being heckled mercilessly. I believe they have thin profit margins and much of their success depends on mitigating the line they have by receiving orders and cooking the food as quickly and efficiently as possible. This is a necessity when you have Philly's other famous cheese steak "restaurant" (Pat's) about 30 feet away across the street. Not saying what he did is right or wrong, just though I'd lend some background to the story. Here is one of the signs from Pat's:
He has a right to put up any sign he wants, it's his restaurant. It's harsh, like others have said, but it's his right. However what if you're an American born but you're dumb, so you're forced to use sign language? That would be difficult.
Yeah, it's implied racism. I'm actually pretty cool with though, being a big believer in social Darwinism
Answer? english , english, english, and more english. Geez, I don't like the fact that we're being "taken over". Kinda blows balls.
You're ------- skippy it is. I could live off of Pat's. To add to that, Pat's (and Geno's too, I believe) has the prices with tax up on the menu, and they're all actual amounts. So you might order a steak that's $5.73 but adds up to $6 even. It's all about speed. And it's not rocket surgery to order. Whiz with. Done. Pay the man $6 cash. Get your steak. Add peppers if you want. Eat. People line up at both stores quite early in the morning; it's not uncommon to wait in a long line to get your steak. But you get through the line FAST and get your steak FAST. A 10-person line shouldn't take more than 5 minutes, 8 tops. But when you have someone in the line who needs you to translate everything into esperanto (or some dark-haired woman who takes her sweet time), you hold up the line for everyone. There is no inside. It's just a big, permanent stand you walk up to. Tables are outside. And it's not just Pat's and Geno's right there. Luke's is just around the corner. I can't remember what else is there, but you get the idea. I think of it this way: if you go to Pat's or Geno's and can't order in English, you're an ***h**e. Yes. You're a schmuck for willingly holding up 15 other people because can't understand or are just too self-centered and lazy to learn how to order in English. You think that's harsh? There's a New Mexican restaurant in El Paso where no one, not even the wait staff, understands English. And when I was up in denTON, a GREAT Mexican restaurant opened up where the menu was in Spanish. Do you know what happens if you don't speak Spanish at either of them? You either grunt and point to things or hold everyone else up. And sometimes, you're just screwed. This isn't a xenophobic thing; it's just a respect thing. As a final note, have any of y'all ever been to Thelma's BBQ? Thelma has rules all over the place. One of them is that she won't take orders if you're talking on your cell phone. People say she's rude, but all she wants is for you to show a little **** respect for her establishment. I don't think that's a lot to ask.
Well, along with the United States, America does include Argentina, Colombia, Ecudaor, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Uraguay, Paraguay and Gayana. If you think about about it, only Candas and the U.S. speak english. The rest of America speaks Spanish and Portugese.
Are you referring to a restaurant in Mexico, or an American restaurant that serves Mexican food? The former would follow from what his sign says, but the latter would not. It is the location of the eatery that is relevant, not the menu. You can't possibly be serious in your contention that it is impossible to immigrate to America legally without family already here.
I voted no. If these non-English-speaking customers are affecting the bottom line, and the solution is to put up this desperate sign, then there's something wrong with the operation. It's his business but I for sure won't go there even if I speak English.
Eh. Most of the street carts do a better steak than Pat's, Geno's or Jim's. Anyway, it's a pretty simple ordering system, and one that's not terribly difficult to follow.
