    Great thread.

The only starters I think are guaranteed right now are T-Mac and Yao. Battier will likely start, but I could see Adelman starting Bonzi instead.

It will be interesting to see how the PF situation unfolds. I hope Hayes can still be a significant contributor for the team, but with a new coach you never know. Morey's number crunching should support Chuck, though -- if Adelman is willing to consider that. I expect Scola to get a greater share of the PF minutes than Chuck.

I also think the Rockets could go to a smaller lineup a little more often. Adelman has mentioned using Aaron Brooks off the bench to push the pace, and I think he may include a small unit in his rotation for exactly that purpose. I wouldn't be surprised to see a lineup like James/Francis/Wells/Battier/Hayes when the two stars are resting.

Between James and Francis, I think Francis will likely start -- but I think either would work alright. I expect Mutombo will be used sparingly to save him for the playoffs (which he may not appreciate), and Hayes/Scola/Butler will be used more often in the backup C role.

It was a blog posting that said the Rockets released Reed. The Rockets have not released him.

I think a starting lineup of:

    SF
    Bonzi
    Tmac
    Scola or Hayes
    Yao

would be sick!! The front line may have a little trouble rebounding but since Tmac is a good rebounder at the 3 and SF and Bonzi are two of the best rebounding guards in the game I think the problem is diminished. What you have is a line up with two guys who will average 20+ a game, two guys who can drop 20 on any given night and a 5th guy who doesn't give a rat's behind about scoring but instead wants to rebound, defend and do whatever it takes to get more possessions (both Scola or Hayes give you this).

Then you have MJ, Battier and Scola or Hayes coming off the bench with some spot duty from Mutombo, Luther and Kirk depending on the match ups.

I didn't mention Skip because I think he is a goner and Brooks is probably going to get garbage minutes (but there should be a lot with this team) for his rookie season.

Sure, I'm just as excited as the next fan. On the other hand I remember the excitement I had as a kid after the first championship. That was the greatest offseason ever for Rockets fans.

Battier should be coming off the bench, unless he shows more versatility than in years past.

i'm just wondering how the offseason will end. we are supposed to have 20 players under contract when everything is said and done with the unsigned contracts.

By the end of training camp, we need to see 5 gone someway somehow... Im hoping those will be...

    Rafer Alston
    Justin Reid
    John Lucas III

thats all i can come up with. I really want to see both Mike Harris and Kirk Snyder make it, but they will be playing a similar role. Although we dont need them this season, we do need them for our future because Wells and Francis are the short term solution. I'm assuming they will leave for more money and longer contracts when the opportunity presents itself. So im hoping we can keep at least one of them so in case of injury.

I really dont know what Morey will cook up, but I am definately afraid of the outcome. Many hearts will be broken with the deals that will have to be made. Some of these guys have promising futures. I have no attachment to Alston, Reid, or Lucas, so they can be cut/traded away :). We will have to do a couple of 2 for 1 moves to make this happen. There is no way you can cut so many gauranteed contracts! can you??

Battier is a good trade asset if things won't go well ......

Rafer must be given enough playing time to boost his value and traded before Feb.

The problem is that Battier isn't a good off-the-bench type. His strong points are defense and hitting open threes.

It's better to have the extra defense against the other team's starting 2's & 3's than to waste it locking down guys the likes of Kirk Snyder and Luther Head.

The open threes will be more plentiful for players that work alongside T-Mac & Yao than they will for Dikembe and Mike James' crew...and Battier is one of the best 3-point shooters on the Rockets, period.

Plus Bonzi Wells' ability to bang smaller players would come in handy off the bench because opponents benches have generally smaller swingmen than their starters.

And his "situationally questionable" defense would have less of an impact when Kobe or Lebron or whoever is on the bench.

We thought the Rockets were super deep last year, too... and look what happened. There were only about 8 players worth playing.

I withhold judgement until the players actually show up.

he does prefer to play the 2. in orlando, he played the 2 exclusively. but when he came to houston, JVG played him more towards the 3 for defensive purposes.

but in all reality, when he goes on offense, the best defender guards him. so it really doesn't matter.

No way the team trades Battier. He is considered by ownership and management as a cornerstone of the franchise. Plus, I don't think the Rockets will be re-signing Bonzi next summer. They will have to make a decision to keep EITHER Bonzi or Francis. If both play decently this season, the team will likely go with the more beloved Francis. Let alone the fact that Battier is a full two years younger than Bonzi and has the best combination of defense and three-point shooting of any non-superstar in the league.
