Rock got the Blues The Stones, Paul Butterfield and others had been riffing off the Blackman's blues before this, but 2 hit with such devastating power it was irresistible. Maybe it was Arena Rock gets the blues. Rock gets a brain. Sort of the turning point for Steely Dan, and jazz influenced rock and for lyric structure, I think. Less literal , yeah yeah yeah, and more evocative, amorphous poetry.
Didn't have a huge commercial impact, but was huge for indie rock bands that followed. And yes, I'm biased too.
For me, The Stooges and Devo probably did more to change music in a positive way than anyone else. This one is more of a single than an Album, but this single had a bigger impact on American culture than any other in my lifetime that I can think of.

Sorry dude, but they were ALL at the tail end of the West Coast run. Only one group changed everything regarding rap (after it began of course): N.W.A.
This is a very interesting thread because of the way you can view the idea of 'this changes everything'. For instance, Sgt Pepper's was a response to Pet Sounds. So was the game changer Sgt Pepper's? Was is Pet Sounds? Both? Parliament Funkadelic is practically the foundation of early hip hop (paraphrase from Bambaataa)...but James Brown beget Sly and the Family Stone who beget the P-funk sound....so who changed everything? Hi, axle...nice to be wrapped around you....
