Yeah, lunch for sure Jeff. I'd be happy to offer you a place to crash for the night, but it sounds like your day will just be getting started. Let me know if that changes and I'll put you up. But lunch for sure.
Jeff, I know Auckland, NZ is a little out the way, so I won't make a request for you to stop by...but, I urge to go to Memphis with all of my heart. It is one of the coolest places in the world. Beale St. is not necessarily all that, but there are several incredible things there: 1) Take the Memphis tour with Tad Peirson of American Dream Safari (look for it on the web). He is one of the most knowledgeable people I have ever met about music. He's a hell of guy. He takes you all around Memphis in the back of his sweet '55 Cadillac showing the craddle of rock and roll and blues and basically every cool music since Adam. Included in the tour is a tour of Sun Studios. They opened the new Stax museum since we went a few years ago. 2) Graceland, especially after Tad shows you where Elvis really grew up in Memphis, is a sight to behold. Tacky and awesome all at once. 3) The Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel where MLK was murdered. 4) My favorite place in the world: Hollywood's night club. Hollywood Rayford is a local legend (hell, he should have parades in his honor thrown for him around the world. Daily) who has a nightclub with a huge lighted floor exactly like Saturday Night Fever only more of it and everything else is lit up like a pinball machine. The club is dedicated to the brotherhood of man, blacks and whites, straight and gay, young and old dancing crazily to colored lights and booming party music. You will never have more fun. Trust me on this one.
Thanks, BMoney. I am going to Memphis. I'll definitely consider the Tad Peirson tour. Sounds interesting. I may go to Graceland or at least to Elvis' grave. We'll see.
You can squeeze in a ton more than the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall -- there's actually a lot to see in that small area. One thing that people skip over but that's really cool is the Rodin museum. I'll be happy to give you more suggestions as your trip approaches. Also, there are a few good jazz clubs that I bet you'd dig. Another good blues/zydeco spot, but you can get that in Texas! I'm trying to remember -- are you a vegetarian? Too bad if you are, or I'd meet you at my favorite cheesesteak place.
Great suggestion. This is one of the prettiest drives I've ever done -- if you have time, this is a must.
