I love border towns. Cheap as hell. I've stayed in a fleabag hotel for $2 a night. Since the only time I was in the room was to actually sleep, I couldn't care less that it was crappy.

And I've had ice, frozen drinks, and salsa plenty of times. Never a problem once.

As for the water, I've never tried it, nor would I want to.

Go to Matamoros. She is your girlfriend, right?

Don't impress her! It only makes it worse down the road! Later, she'll say "why don't you take me places anymore?"

GUYS!!!! This crap has to stop. It makes me look bad. Take her to Matamoros, get her crappy, sleep in your car and take her home.

When she comes to tell her she blacked out at the hotel, which was a five star, then she got all crazy and started yelling at you to take her home. Act like you were the gentleman the entire time.

She'll be too embarassed to ask you to take her on a trip outside of Houston after that.:)

even if you stay at the nicest hotel in Cancun...never...under any circumstances...consume cheese enchiladas. and don't believe them when they tell you the water in the hotel has been purified.

    here endeth the lesson.

Actually, the place we went to (Moon Palace) had their own water purification plants. Its called reverse osmosis or something like that.

Anyway, all guests were given a presentation about the water treatment and were encouraged to drink the water. Both my wife and I drank the water (although not a ton) for 5 days and never once felt ill. In fact, water tasted pretty clean. Everyday we had to walk by the infirmary to go eat and we never saw anyone in there chucking cookies.

However, I am sure most resorts are not like that. That is why I always recommend that the Palace resorts.

PS - Good to see you back Madmax.

I have to say though, that the worst part of Cancun is the airport. Trying to get off the plane and to a taxi is like running a the Gauntlet.

My advice to ANYONE going through to Cancun airport is, dont trust anyone!! There are a ton of vendors who misrepresent themselves and will tell you they are with the hotel you are staying at when they aren't. They want to give you a presentation on a time share by inticing you with a free blanket and booze. The catch is, you have to give them a $40 deposit. If you dont go, you dont get it back. The presentation lasts all day and is very high pressure.

Not sure if anyone else has experienced that in Cancun.

    Codell,

My wife and I stayed at the Moon palace 2 years ago...I concur that it is a fantastic place to stay.

The only down side is that the beaches are not that great there...you need to go further in to town to get the great blue water beaches.

The Moon palace is on the edge, and the water is ok...but not that clear blue.

Otherwise, the food was great, the atmosphere fantastic, and the rooms were very nice.

Actually, I do remember that that was the only sour point about the Moon Palace. They had a bit of a seaweed problem on the beach and in the water that made the water look dirty.

Did you get to visit the other Palace resorts?
