I just have to wonder: 1. If someone posted elsewhere that there are just black people at some event or question any number of african americans as being "a lot" - would that instantenously make him racist? 2. Is there a problem of all being white? I live in Europe and don't know much about racism and all, but sometimes I get a feeling that this racism thing goes just one way. Just correct me if I'm wrong and I certainly don't wan't to cause any racial heat-ups. Thanx
I would answer by saying that I think the definition of racism is muddled and watered-down in today's USA. I have lived in predominantly white and predominantly black communities and have never felt discriminated against, nor seen much if any discrimination. Unfortunately today's "racism" is mostly political. I mean to say it's on the group level, and not on the individual level. Americans are naturally suspicious of anything which has an unusual racial or ethnic makeup - and this definitely includes whites. It's sad. I dare say it extends out to homosexuals, religions, and everything. Americans think very compartmentalized and are very collectivist.. they have a tendency of painting any issue, especially political, as an 'us vs. them' situation... again, sad and counterproductive. A group with completely benign motivations will be criticized if it is too white, too black, too arab, too Christian, or too gay. It's the world we Americans live in. I know this belongs in D&D, but heck, this thread should've never started.
There's a black family who lives in my appartment building and they are Mormons. They're from Africa though.
Wow, people here are taking this topic way to seriously in the racial department. I started this topic out of sheer bordom from watching the Jazz (sorry in the wrong place.) I'm not racist at all, my immediate family on my dads side is black, and the friends I usually talk to this about are also black and we think it's funny. Not once did I think they are REALLY racist, it was just a life style that happend to stick throughout the years from histroy. There is no need to subtle hostility for any reason, just roll with it have fun, and don't take this so seriously.
Don't forget about the Pacers. They are just as, if not more white than the Jazz. But yeah, this thread is stupid. Mormons are not racist (speaking collectively), neither are Jazz fans...That being said we can still hate Jazz fans for what they are...EXTREMELY OBNOXIOUS.
Yeah, Jazz fans are predominantly white (which I assume, the entire state of Utah is, as well). Therefore, the Jazz org. goes and drafts international / white players. It's not a big deal.
Wow is Nigeria racist or something? Look at all their fans, they're all black. Not even one white guy, asian, or hispanic? I mean they couldn't even allow one brazilian on their team?
No, it's just you and your friends. The rest of us NEVER noticed and nobody has EVER mentioned it before. Next you'll be telling us the Celtics used to have a lot of white players on their roster.
Not really, but I'm pretty dure my friends and I arn't the only ones in the entire US. I don't understand all the hostility, it's not racist or wrong to notice this. I'll admit i souldn't of posed the sarcastic question of mormons being racist, but guys take it easy. I guess I'm just more comfortable with this subect than others because I'm so close to all races in my family and friends... Geez, is there any way to delete this topic?
I dont think Utah fans are racist because they do cheer on Boozer, Williams, Millsap, CJ Miles but you do make the point that if you look in the stands that the majority of people are white. Is there anything wrong with that? No but it is fun trying to find a black guy in the stands. Kinda like where is waldo.
Dude, I'm not calling you a racist (or even implying it) -- I'm saying you stated something that is not only obvious, but that has been mentioned on Clutchfans maybe a hundred or so times. I've seen it said at least a dozen times here that there are more black people on the court in Utah than in the stands. OLD news. And I'm not a hater, I just think it's pretty funny that you really thought you're the only person who's ever noticed it. I've got a few ideas for future threads you can start: Thinking about Middle East and conflict... Anyone else notice that Arabs and Jews can't seem to get along? Thinking about the Astros and their 2010 record... Anyone else notice they're not winning very much so far? Thinking about "Diff'rent Strokes"... Anyone else notice that old white dude had two black kids??
