It has to just do with their racial makeup. If you look at the population of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and a lot of midwestern states, there just is a much larger white population. What is just unusual about Utah, is that Salt Lake City's population, which cities everywhere tend to be more diverse and not reflect the state's correct racial makeup, still has a very high concentration of white people. The fact that the Mormon church used to preach that black people were black because of their sins and they were cursed until they did away with that teaching in 1978, I'm sure is a reason why many black people were not attracted to or welcomed into that faith pre-1978. Utah being a haven for Mormons, may not have made that state appealing for blacks in the past. The white/Mormon jokes about the Jazz are inappropriate. This topic is just stupid. I'm sick of reading "beat the mormons" & "jazz should change their name to the mormons" and such every time the rockets play the jazz. It's very disrespectful. But to answer your question, yes, I have noticed the amount of white people, and the mormon church has a history of racism but did away with it in 1978. They do not hold on to any of those teachings anymore.
I think Salt Lake City may be the most ethnically diverse place in Utah. Utah as a whole is 95% white. One of my teachers in college took a teaching job in a small town in Wyoming in the 60s. The town he was teaching in had never seen a black man and the next closest major city (for Wyoming) was going to give him the key to the city. Well, another black man, who was in the Air Force, came passing through and stopped at a diner. Everybody assumed that this must be the black man they'd been hearing about so they gave him the royal treatment and gave him the key to the city instead.
Nothing really. He arrived a day or two after the other guy and went on to teach choral music in the small town but I don't know for how long. He didn't get the key to the city though.
YEAH DUDE TRUE STORY. White people are racist and stupid! Even when they try to do a good thing like give recognition to a black man their inherent bigotry gets in the way! here's a another true story A friend of mine has a friend who has a cousin who had a sister whose boyfriend goes to temple with this guy who was down in Alabama once and he heard some guy say that they said in Bible class that Jews have horns in their head! Christians are antisemites! And Southerners are ignorant! Urban mythsand stereotypes are TRU LIFE. seriously dude, does Cannonball's story sound real to you? And for the record I believe Utah is about 80% white, inclusive of hispanic whites. There is a sizeable Pacific Islander population in SLC due to the missionary work that they've done in Samoa and other places. Mormons do a ton of charity and missionary work in 3rd world Asia and Africa as well and have many converts in those area Mormons are not racist nor all white.
Who cares if Utah has a lot of white fans. That is not why i dislike them. Can you imagine the outrage if someone came out and said something about all those Hispanic fans at the Spurs game.
and when they are black, they're like the light colored black!! e.g. deron williams and carlos boozer!
everyone needs to calm down saying this is racism. their best two players are black and i don't understand why people get mad that a team can be majority of white guys, there are so few i think that its fine to have a team like that, but i still do hate the jazz. this thread is just dumb because it brings out stupid racism.
Fact: Mormons live in Utah Fact: 99% of Mormons are white (estimate, you get my point) Fact: Mormons that live in Utah are Jazz Fans Fact: Alot of Utah Jazz players are white Not Fact: Utah Fans are racist. Fact: Utah has 0 championships
Fixed it for you And for what it's worth, I'm Mormon and lived in Utah for about 10 years and I still hated the Jazz. But let me tell you, I loved the mountains, the weather, and the relatively crime-free communities.
Honestly did you have to march in here and spout your misinformation? It was already clarified before this trainwreck of a post. I am a resident Mormon poster and I am just cracking up at what I'm reading. "The Mormon church has a history of racism..." What was the objective here? Please think before you speak and irreparably damage the image of an entire religion to people who don't know better. Better to leave it alone. Kapeesh?
