I went without for about 2 months last year after moving, halfway on purpose. it got REALLY boring, so as a consequence: 1. I did more grocery shopping and cooking 2. I did a lot more drinking in bars to watch sports 3. I did a lot more exercising to nullify 1 and 2. However I should say I had only really bad/weak wireless access at that time either so that probably contributed to the boredom substantially. Xbox live, now that it has netflix streaming, would have been a godsend. I probably could have made it for 6 months or more with that. My parents in Houston still use the rabbit ears w/converter and they survive just fine. Of course they're just not used to cable so it's easier for them.
finalsbound's parents are like this. They are like 60 years old and watch TV all the time, but only the over the air stuff. I don't know how they can survive on that, especially when her dad makes 100k a year and still can't justify even springing for a basic cable package.
I did it early last year for four months. The biggest issue- NFL and ease of use. Check out Boxee, Playon and Plex. And Netflix is a must with their huge streaming library which gets better and better all of the time. Lastly, you can always get the latest video at Redbox or the new Blockbuster Redbox ripoffs. Get your antenna from Monoprice.com. It's definitely doable, more and more so all the time. But it certainly isn't as slick even with interfaces like Boxee. So if you and your wife are willing to put up with more overhead, go for it. Just remember the number one rule of Fight Club.
i have thought about this and really there isnt much outside of the NBA i watch on cable tv if there was a way for me to only have NBATV and League Pass I would have that. maybe in the future i would probably ditch the cable and just pay for a faster internet service as i mainly can just download and watch via ps3 any tv shows/movies
I don't know what you are talking about... see what i did there? This is interesting. From the Consumerist.com the list shows the wholesale prices each channel charges cable companies for their product. Keep in mind these are wholesale prices, cable companies obviously mark-up the prices, profit, etc.
so you can get league pass online and watch all nba? and then hypothetically have that stream to your tv?
The BBS is a perfect replacement for the real-time pop-culture syncopation turning on the TV provides. Topics like Epic Beard Man, Skip Gates, Healthcare Reform, Jersey Shore, Tiger Woods et al. (since the '09 summer) ONLY have an internet discussion frame of reference in my head, for ill or better. I have no idea what TV says about these things, but I have a clear perception of how the public reacts to what TV says about them and that is more than enough for me. You just trade exhausting, same-old-story commercials for smaller, more efficient banner ads. Like turning Tmac into Kmart.
Does anyone else have problem receiving HD over the airwaves? Every person I've seen with this, constantly has their feed freezing and cutting out.
I only care for watching the Rockets too and that's about it for cable. Good thing I don't have to pay for it.
can the ps3 support nba broadband now? if so thats something i may look at after my current contract is done.... my only issue is that i live with roommates, one who watches tv all the time in his room so that helps maybe in a year or so i plan to move out into my own place would probably just go straight internet then
I'm setting up my online account today and am going to try streaming some of this through the PS3 on my HD TV. I'll report the results. I really hope this works out well because I would love to ditch cable and not sacrifice my Rocket viewing (not that I've been able to watch much this year).
This makes me wish that Congress would nut up and force the cable companies to offer an ala carte option: I'd take: ESPN 1& 2 FSN TNT NFL-N TBS FX Universal HD NBA-TV E! AMC Spike Bravo VH1 WGN G4 VH1 Classic For: $30 - more than double their wholesale.
I ditched cable last year in exchange for nothing. I don't watch tv anymore. I am sure I will go back to the dark side one day, but temporarily it is one of the best moves I have ever made. I read more books. I get more sleep. I listen the Rox on the radio as I don't believe you can watch the Rockets on League Pass in Houston (someone correct me if I am wrong). [OLD FART ALERT]. In the old days before HSE and Hannah Storm, we had to listen on the radio to many games that weren't televised. So it was not big stretch for me, but boy do I miss Gene and Jim! I started taking dance classes. Your wife would probably enjoy this - what woman doesn't love to dance? (tip to you young bucks out there - if you are looking to improve your social life, this is a very good move). Myself, I got a smoking hot girlfriend. [GTFO no pics]. You and the wife sound like you don't always conform. Go for it.
I am switching to Dish. Bad thing is there is no other option in my area for broadband than cable. So I don't know what I'm going to do about that any suggestions? ATT is out..
I have not and never will. U-Verse is good. Just switch your package to U200 which will cut your monthly bill.
Ouch, not in the near future it seems. Monoprice Not Taking New Orders During Fraud Investigation By Ben Popken on March 10, 2010 10:24 AM http://consumerist.com/2010/03/monoprice-not-taking-new-orders-during-fraud-investigation.html Popular a/v cable site monoprice is back up but is not taking any new orders while it investigates the potential theft of banking information from its customers. Monoprice took its site offline this weekend after a few customers complained that credit cards they used at the site had fraudulent charges. The company has been continuously updating customers on its Facebook page, where some customers are also sounding off that they've been victimized.
