All ketchup has insects in it! Get out the microscope and check for yourself! You will find them fast. How many insects did you have for breakfast this morning? The answer may surprise you! Despite advances in pest control technology, it is still not possible to exclude all insects from our food supply. Most agricultural products are already contaminated with insects (or insect products) when they are harvested, and still more gain access during storage. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has adopted Grade Standards designed to protect American consumers from inferior agricultural products. The standards set legal limits for spoilage or contamination due to insects and other agents. The highest grade is "U.S. No. 1". In order to qualify as U.S. No. 1 Grade, the commodities listed below cannot exceed the following limits of contamination: Ketchup -- 30 fruit fly eggs per 100 grams Canned corn -- 2 insect larvae per 100 grams Blueberries -- 2 maggots per 100 berries Peanut butter -- 50 insect fragments per 100 grams Curry powder -- 100 insect fragments per 100 grams Wheat -- 1% of grains infested Sesame seed -- 5% of seeds infested Coffee -- 10% of beans infested Have some more ketchup with your fries! http://www.cals.ncsu.edu:8050/course/ent425/text18/food.html
Two things... 1) How do they set the limits? I mean, why 30 furit fly eggs instead of 20? 2) Theese are the thresholds for 'No. 1 Grade' ; does that mean they can exceed these at will if they don't care about No. 1 Grade? I mean, does anyone here check to see if everything they buy is No 1?
I saw it on a local news broadcast. They interviewed an entomologist who discussed how many insects we eat in our food, then I googled (you know, searched the Net ).
THANK YOU. Christ, I thought I was the only one on this BBS who couldn't stand these guys. Someone was surprised when I said that they sucked. I wish I never had to hear the phrase from my roommate, "I'm gonna put some music on." All the guy listens to is crap like Maroon 5 and Creed. My other roommate and I have him pretty well-trained on the Creed stuff, but the poor guy has seriously bad taste in music. He's still my boy and all, but damn....
it's not just that the music is so god awful, but it's so damn catchy as well and stays stuck in my head for days upon hearing it.
Non-Organic milk is "factory produced" via hormone therapy. The cows are injected with hormones to produce extra milk. These hormones were developed by chemical giant Monsanto. Unfortunately, they never quite got the formula right and the "therapy" tend to induce a great deal of pus in the udder of the cow, which not surprisingly, ends up in the milk. The FDA should have stopped it, but a political move by a U.S. representative with a great deal of Monsanto employees in his district forced it through. You can read all the grimy details in The Best Democracy Money Can Buy. Drink organic milk. edit - found a link (one of many): http://www.garynull.com/Documents/GE/GotPus1.htm
I tend to eat a lot of fried food. I feel that way any bad stuff in there should be killed. I also never, ever look into the window at the drive thru. I don't want to know what's going on behind the scenes.
