Thibodeau still says Mcgrady is a possibility, but shooting is first priority

AHAHAHAHAHAHA! Ok, so lemme...hahaha....ok sorry, so..hahahaha....ha, *deep breaths* so, you're actually saying T-mac was a good defensive player? Show me one play where it's not a block (occasionally I might add. He averaged about half a block a game while in Houston). Also, show me one you tube video where he's in a defensive stance, and toughly guards his player in a defensive stance, for a series of possessions. Good luck.

Like I said, lateral quickness and long arms with a nack for defense.

..im not talking about blasting anyone. Watch games after allof this hoopla...watch the interactions between guys when tmac came back in a NY uni....y'all can assume the rockets have too much class to blast tmac and i'm sure they do, they're not going to do it publicly, but if the guy is really such a cancer they aren't going to talk to him and be friendly with him on the bench and before games. They dont have to say hello and stop and chit chat for a few minutes.

Fans would learn a lot more by watching players when they arent in front of a camera, rather than when they being interviewed directly. I'm here trying to point out what i see "behind the scenes" and how that's what is truly real, yet y'all keep goign back to whats in newspapers and interviews, which is odd considering y'all also say not to believe what's said in public because they're trying to be diplomatic.

And shane's "shot" at tmac was hardly that. He was one of the guys chit chatting with tmac and having a laugh when he came back to houston. We're here saying "ohh shane took a shot at him", but it's probably something battier and tmac have spoken about before, probably even joked about it, since that's just typical tmac (the pointing on defense) and it's well known. It's also common in the league, so it's not some basketball sin only commited by tmac. Mcgrady probably didnt even blink when he heard what battier said and if it was so bad battier would have never mentioned it to the media. for him to mention it, it's something they both can brush off.

thibodeau said they were looking for a shooter - they passed on mcgrady in favor of keith bogans...keith bogans!

is keith bogans really more of a 'shooter', which is a subjective term anyway, than mcgrady? someone who has twice led the league in scoring and did the oft cited 13-in-35? the fact that they took keith bogans to fill that role says all you need to know.

and after countless tmac drama threads i cant believe how very litte blame, if any, is put on the front office. They easily deserve a big piece of the blame here. We can discuss how tmac "handled it" a billion times, but the bottom line is if tmac didnt have a a curved spine the chances of any of this drama happening are very very low. Tmac didn't give himself a fat contract. Tmac didnt trade for himself. His scoliosis didnt develop in houston, he's had it since he's been in the NBA and teams assumed he had somehow got past the issue, which is plain stupid considering it's not going to away and it's actually only going to break down a body with time/age.

When houston initially traded for him i was pissed off because of this precisely. I didnt believe he'd hold up very long. Eventually i drank the kool aid everyone else drank and gave in to the yao/tmac hype, the championship hype, and all that. It's what the front office gave in to as well and the fans need to realize the team itself screwed up in a big way and didnt do their homework, or maybe they did and decided to ignore it because of the money and hype tmac would bring.

In the beginning teams/doctors said tmac wouldnt last too long .....he lasted years...logically on would see tmac was an exception and got away with more than he should have physically... he was on borrowed time and everyone knew it. Why would you take something that's on borrowed time and make it the center of your business? That's not logical at all unless you have a sure replacement and Houston didnt. They messed up and tmac is getting all the blame. Fans can say it's about how he "handled it", but the truth is all the emotions fans are letting out towards this subject is from a failed title run and the failed yao/tmac experiment. We're hurt it didnt work out and it's easy to say tmac's at fault because he's lazy and doesnt know how to carry himself and if he was more like Dream he'd still be here and we'd have two superstars, etc....

How about we just get over it? dude's not even playing here anymore and the team has more than made up for it by assembling this current team.

I knew you were going to reply with a few steals. And of them is in Orlando?! Any player gets a few steals here and there. So basically he had a block every other game and had one steal every game. How is that a knack for defense? Where's this consistent, defensive lateral quickness that prevents a player from getting to the basket? If you can do that on a consistent basis, you have a "knack" for defense. Not a block or steal here and there.

T-Mac's defensive metrics (going by DRtg and Def. Win Shares) in 04-05 and 06-07 were quite good (those were also his healthiest seasons with the team). Looking past advanced metrics, which have their flaws, I remember watching him and thinking his defense was above average (and very good in the playoffs).

That said, he wasn't healthy or at his best nearly often enough.

I'm begging you to please stop, its getting really annoying. Ok I get it!!! You don't like Mcgrady! You don't have to prove it to the whole fu**ing world!! And its impossible for someone to post every single defensive play someone has made, that would be silly. People post videos of spectacular plays worthy of many views. They just don't sit all day posting every single game, that's foolish. I thought you would get my point, but no, you insist on beating every single proven fact in video evidence. I don't know what you have against Mcgrady.. Did he hurt you somehow? Did he not sign you or your sons autograph? Did he not smile back when you smiled at him? Whatever the case may be, I really don't care.

I have always been a Mcgrady supporter ever since his days in Orlando. And I will continue to support him wherever his career may take him. You can continue to hate on him all you like, because trust me, I will not lose any sleep over your or any other hater.

T-mac's defensive was above average when he was healthy and felt like playing it. That's the problem. It makes everything come full circle. Often times he just didn't give it his all when guarding a player. He didn't try his hardest or close to his hardest on every defensive play (or offensive for that matter). Even when he was healthy, he would take plays off. I remember his tenure in Houston very well and often isolating him with my eyes on the floor to examine what he did at the defensive end. Many times he would be walking around with his arms at his sides. When his guy would cut to the basket, or try to make a play, he would make this half assed attempt to jog alongside the guy as he made a strong move to the cup...

Listen man, you made the decision to go back and forth with me. It takes two people to discuss. So if you don't like debating then either ignore me or don't get on a FORUM, where people DEBATE.

You're points are very weak I might add. You think by posting isolated highlights of players makes them spectacular at that skill? I can find a highlight of Shaq going coast to coast in a game, does that mean he has a "knack" for it? So stop engaging me if you don't want to discuss, and please stop posting half page long video posts that are completely irrelevant to the discussion. Then I look like a jackass for responding to them, because then I fill half the page up to with your quote.

This thread has been twisted in so many different ways, and I was simply linking nba news during the "dry season". It's obvious from my initial comments I'm not a huge Mcgrady fan. Many of us here are not. I didn't go on a huge rant when I linked the article. I just injected a small piece of my opinion along with the clip, which I have every right to do. You then engaged me in a post for post debate, which you clearly are not very good at seeing as you had to resort to posting irrelevant you tube clips. This was never meant to be personal, but you obviously have made it that way. We were simply going back and forth with until we had reached an impasse in which our discussion was over, you decided to start this up again today, and then finally got mad. So don't get all upset. Have a discussion like a man or don't discuss at all.

No one is losing sleep over this because it's not supposed to be personal. You have every right to love Mcgrady, so keep on doing it, and I'll keep on remembering how he quit on an entire city and left behind a legacy of failure, false promises, and unprofessional behavior. Now can we stop talking about this?

Tmac was never healthy. You don't heal from structural scoliosis. It doesnt go away unless you surgically change the spine. Tmac has his faults, but few people can comprehend what his condition can do. You're never 100% and anytime you're on the court you risk not being able to go at whatver percentage you were just the game before, minutes before, even seconds before. Is that an excuse? Actually, YES. Is he a victim? NO. He's made millions playing ball for a decade and can happily retire any second, so no one can make him a victim, but it's also not just unfair, but senseless, to straight out assume he was always faking or being lazy when he failed to "try" during games.

The team AND tmac (for not knowing when to quit/take back seat, which is his fault now, but usually seen as a positive in most athletes) have to share the blame here, but the team had the final say in bringing in goods that were well known to be damaged and that was the most significant mistake of all, yet it's the one fans ignore.

His back is not the problem it is his head....and he opted for a super risky microfracture surgery instead of listening to umpteen other doctors who said to just strengthen the leg muscles.

You know that whole Scoliosis thing...has anyone other than Tmac ever brought it up?

I mean have we seen a reputable person talking about it?

It might be very mild, it might be in his head...it might be severe.....at the end of the day, his back is not the problem, it is his enormous ego.

Maybe if he sat back and humbled himself and realized that currently he is NOT the player he once was, and probably never will be again....someone would take a shot at him.

But it is EXTREMELY telling that no teams have offered him anything...not a single contract.....don't think all that DIVA BS he pulled on the Rockets didn't get out, other teams know exactly what a bull**** artist and chemistry risk Tmac is.....

He is facing the truth, can he stand up to it, and move on as a player.....remains to be seen.

Stop making excuses for the man.....he has made enough for everyone already.

T-mac was quoted as saying he has a "slight" case of scoliosis. Which I'm sure as you'll point out is still very hard to overcome. I do not doubt this one bit. I agree with most of your post, but I never assumed he was "always faking" or "being lazy", but there were times when he said he was healthy and played on the OFFENSIVE end like he was healthy, and then would immediately turn around and not give the same effort on the defensive end. He usually gave a strong defensive effort in clutch time, usually playoff games, and then again sometimes in the regular season. However, what I'm saying is, when he said he was healthy, his back appeared to not impair him (as he would be putting up 40 points and dunking all over the place) and he was playing at the highest level offensively, why didn't we always see the same effort on the defensive end during these times?

Weak points? You are the one who disputed your own comments. You said earlier that Mcgrady was a bad defender healthy or not. Then later on you said he was an "above average defender". Make up your mind. RV6 has previously already posted on this forum pretty much all I can say regarding your hate torwards Mcgrady, so there's not much I can add.

And btw, I'm not upset, I'm sick of your childish bickering that makes no sense. For some reason Mcgrady has hurt your feelings, and thats ok I guess. Some men are more sensitive than others, I get that. Just don't say stuff thats false, and then refute the very comments you said.

For some reason you didn't appreciate what Mcgrady did for the franchise. I on the other hand, did appreciate his playoff performances he gave us here. It's just too bad he didn't have more teammates show up. His stats are top 10 for playoff performances, it might even be top 5. If you are one of the persons who resort to the "he never made it past the first round" comments then so be it. It's not like he didn't try, he gave it all he had in the playoffs.

For some reason you are mad at the way he handled his departure from Houston, which is understandable. Like I said, some men are more sensative than others.. The situation could have very well been handled better on BOTH sides. Adelman and Morey could have came out and said, look we have no further interest in you Mcgrady so we will let you go.. But instead they lead him on a wild chase of the unexpected. They played him only 7 minutes a game. When he did show flashes (against the clippers I think) they just sat him back on the bench. Even the commentators (Worrell and Clyde) were saying they would hope to see him in the second half because they felt he could help. But yet, he sat on the bench.

Now, it does go both ways.. Mcgrady could and should have kept his mouth shut and just took it. But people have personalities, and that is to be expected. You can't change the person you are. Although Mcgrady does have some bad qualities, he does have good ones, just like every single human being. I have made the bad decision to judge a person too quick in the past, but I have changed my outlook on life. People aren't always as they appear. When Mcgrady would get injured and miss chunks of games I would get pissed and question his abilities and heart. I was of the ones who thought he should just quit and retire.

But then I saw a few interviews of him and I saw that he really did want to win, but deep inside his body was holding him back (injuries). I also got to see the person Mcgrady was, not just the player. I don't know if you ever saw 3 points Darfur, but it was outstanding. It made me see that although he might be a famous basketball star with millions of dollars, he does have a true personality to him. That is why I say I am not quick to judge.

Also, btw I only posted those videos, because I was starting to wonder if you even watched Rockets baskeball when Mcgrady was here.

    Exactly.

This is what many of us having been saying for the last few years. Other teams/coaches/GM's saw what he was doing here and they decided they didn't want any part of him. Morons on this forum kept repeating "the rest of the NBA sees how badly Morey, Les and Adelman are treating Tmac" but anyone with a brain saw that he had been given numerous second chances and he kept spitting in the collective face of the Rockets organization.

He did this to himself. It isn't his back's fault or his knee's fault. You want to name body parts that are responsible for this guy's fall from grace then look at his heart, his brain and his mouth.

McGrady has never played defense since Adelman took over.

I don't think this is what actually happened. I believe he spoke to two doctors, and the second one convinced him to get the microfracture surgery. The team wanted him to get a third opinion.

I could be wrong. Granted, I remember hearing this from Morey, and you don't seem to trust anything that DM says anyway.

And DD is right, the problem isn't his history of injury, it's his head. I never created this simple and seemingly insignificant thread with the intention of it digressing to a post for post debate about T-Mac injury lore, etc. Although, I should have known it would the minute I began honoring the posts of T-mac loyalists with replies of my own. I guess I just can't help it. My enthusiasm and passion for discourse runs deep, and my nature to defend my opinions parallels that.

When Grendal posted a view pages earlier, he believed we had reached an impasse in our discussion, and he was right. So, I acknowledged that fact and left it at that for a while. But then when people began bringing up more (although equally irrelevant) excuses about T-mac, I jumped right back in. I love Houston Rocket's basketball so much, it's hard to bite my tongue or handcuff myself from touching the keyboard when I continuously read or hear excuse after excuse for the guy.

Does it keep me awake at night? No. Do I still think about what he did to our franchise the last year he was here? No. But in the middle of the summer when there is often nothing to talk about basketball wise, and some posters engage me in a debate about him? Yeah, that same sour taste he left in many of our mouths returns, and I discuss. And why not? It's kept me entertained...
