Or we could've done the Mooch trade because we couldn't get anything for Mooch. The trade exception does last 12 months... so we may not even use it this season.
Why are some people only intent on big splashes in order for a season to be a success? Big trades are great, especially if it generates excitement for your team, but the repercussions are severe if the deal wasn't made correctly. My thinking in this assessment about these "pointless" trades is because you're bored? Not EVERY big trade involves your team. I'm sorry, but it just doesn't I've seen it on these boards for every big trade that ever happens in any sports that gets talked about in here. Someone gets dealt and everyone's wondering why the Rockets/Astros/Texans/RPDs aren't involved in the deal. It just doesn't work that way. If a big trade is what's needed for you to be content and excited about a sport, try fantasy sports....
i agree that the repercussions could be great, but so could the reward. we all know that carroll dawson doesnt strike too many bad deals, minus a few. if we made a "big" deal, it would be because someone up there who knows what their talking about, saw something in somebody that would make us a better team. im not saying we need a trade, but something needs to be done, and a trade has the greatest possible reward, and also the greatest risk, especially midway through the season. but we all remember that trade that brought back the glide and we all know how that turned out. whatever the management does in this time of "desperation" as some are making it seem, we will have to trust them, and wait it out...make it happen cd.
But for any potential "big" deal to happen, they have to be available in the first place, along with a few other things going your way, such as: 1) Your team has a good chance to be in the playoffs and that player can be the difference to go all the way. 1a) Current Status: The Rockets are 4.5 games from the 8th spot and there are a few teams ahead of them (not that I'm not optimistic) 2) The Rockets need to have the right pieces to trade for such a player (I believe these trades are instrumental in some manner, mostly the Moochie trade. 2a) When Glide came to Houston, it was a matter of everything working out. Glide wants to go home and Portland wants to trade him to give him a chance to win. Otis was somewhat expendable and the Rockets are in the playoff hunt, where they need another star to bring home the gold. 3) The salary taken in by getting this player can not hurt the franchise in the long run. 3a) This is the part that people seemingly ignores as a fan. By acquiring this big name guy with a possible huge contract backload, the Rockets could handicap themselves for years to come. Another scenario is to trade or "rent" a player for a playoff run, and to lose what you had for the upcoming years. (A.K.A. the Astros Effect) By doing so, it's do or die, and since the chances of that one trade being the difference should be pretty slim, the Rockets could potentially downgrade from last year. You're talking a team with a young nucleus that could be great for many upcoming years. 4) This player just might not be what the Rockets are looking for. 4a) The Rockets might get a name, but it might not mean anything if he doesn't fit the system. The best example I can think of is the Scottie Q. trade. I have to admit that he's a great player in his prime, but our system under Rudy T. did not fit his profile. He was to bring the ball upcourt, pass it into the post, and spot up for 3 pointers. I'm sorry to say this, but I felt that part of the reason that he was a bust in Houston was the failure to adjust to his strengths. Other examples are Chris Webber w/ Philly, Payton w/ the Lakers, Derek Anderson w/ the Blazers, Grant Hill for Orlando (I know it's mostly because of injury, but look at what Detroit got from that deal.), etc etc etc. This isn't just trades. There are also FA signings such as DA from above, Swift to Houston, Hughes to Cleveland, Boozer to Utah, ... you get the point. These moves could be damaging to an up and coming franchise if things aren't considered carefully. It's not as easy as ... we'll trade Head, Swift, 1st Rounder etc etc for a Zack Randolph, Chris Webber, or another Old_Famous_PF_X_from_a_losing_team and it'll be all roses from this point on. Just my thoughts.
Is there more to follow? Is this just the beginning of our move to the younger more a Is the Baxter and Moochie Trades just the preamble to the remake of the Houston Rockets? Will we see a more athletic, taller and younger Rockets? Who is next on the Block? Anderson-Swift-Howard-Bowen?Will we see another playmaker or will Sura actually make it back onto the Team? Will we be getting that coveted 3rd scorer that so many want to see? Does all this mean that we are still trying for a playoff run or are we building next seasons team?
I dont know if their specifically building for a playoff run or next seasons team but their making moves that needed to be done regardless. It was obvious they needed to get younger and more athletic. As far as who is on the trading block we all know Anderson is but as far as who else you guess is as good as mine.
The 3 mill trade exception is gonna come handy when we try to trade DA and problay swift. it can get us a more then descent player.
That's true, these trades better lead to something. All that i'm seeing so far is bringing in younger guys, which is good. I think Bogans is doing pretty well, I don't know if we're dropping Lampe or if he's going to be a cheap project. It has to be one or the other, there is no other logical way to deal with him unless a team is interested in him. 1. We got rid of Baxter, who didn't really do much, he was nice for a while though. 2. With that, we brought in Bogans, who's already done a pretty decent job defensively. We need to see that 3-ball they are talking about though. 3. We got rid of Moochie's contract/useless spot on roster. The question is why did we bring in Lampe? Is that all we could get, do we actually care for him, or is he just going to be traded/dropped?
Excellent observations, candlegreen. Two or possibly three "small moves" like the acquisitions of Bogans and Lampe/trade exception sometimes equal a "big splash" because they could make the "chemistry" equation more balanced. Only time will tell.
This team, as currently composed, was predicted by ALL to be top 4 in the west. When healthy, we ARE a top 4 team looking at the record. Why do we need to make a big change? If something attractive comes along for Swith, Howard or Wesley then you obviously do it but I don't think its a failed season just because we don't pull a big trade. Relax.
What're we like 16-7 with T-Mac and Yao? We've won 6 of our last 7 games? If this is our squad in a couple weeks, it's much better than no T-Mac or no Yao.
