This act was committed by a select group against a select but less defined group. They are to blame. No one else. - Unless this nation wishes to force us to look at ourselves ...... because maybe we were too prideful or naive or trusting or all of these things together ... and just could not believe that anyone would do such a thing to us.

    OP,
I did not intend to imply that it is not a figment of you imagination, but just that it was not the generally impression created on this board. I think that your emphasis was on how wrong it was, even if subtle. I can accept that.
Washington perpetuates the 'blame game' as much or more than the media (chicken or egg?). Who will lose their head, will it be the FBI chief or CIA chief, FBI or CIA, FBI or CIA?
I agree with you. We allowed this complacency. We allowed our intelligence forces to be hamstrung. I am sure we all have had projects were we needed 10 employees, but where alloted 2 and told to complete it a month early. Recipe for failure.

I liked your "test of the generations" theory. This nation has not had a test of faith in many many years.

A test of rightousness in it's united actions in a long, long time. I for one have questioned in the past, the intestinal fortitude of the Me Generation and the Generation X'ers. We will see if they can stand with grit. Maintain a personal and spiritual identity when a man with a machete and a grenade holds his country in jeporady. This is a new day. It will never be the same for any of us. I hope we have grit.

I am one of the older ones on this board. It has been interesting to watch the questioning and maturation of some on this board. Growth opportunites do not come easy or often when your decisions are 'which MP3 should I download' , 'what kind of beer do I want for the game tonight', or dare I say, 'who's gonna play center' ;) . It absolutely is an issue of personal and spiritual identity. I hope that we all take this opportunity to grow.

    OP,

Chaos and complexity theory now? :)

    I also agree, wholeheartedly.

If you are as old as you are implying you will know the "Leonard" reference. LOL I thought I was the oldest guy on this damn distracting BBS!

Yeah Chaos and complexity indeed .... as I fight to return to my homeostatic equilibrium ... order and simplicity.

    - the "figment of my imagination" phrase was written with a smile on my face but the gravity of the argument I was attempting prevented me from adding one of those confounded smiley-thingees.

    - I think my main piont was that although huimans in general and Americans in particular fall prey to two of the most exasperating foibles of mankind. (1) They are easily distracted from thought and, (2) they are easily bored with repetitious demands to use their heads (to think).

This manifested itself, IMHO anyway, on this BBS and other outlets as a (1) a loss of focus on the matter at hand (and an attempt at blame shifting to the most vulnerable and available) , and (2) offer a pedestrian and apathetic yet expedient solution to the whole emotional mess (make someone pay all the victims for their time and trouble).

Well ... now that I have written the above .... and reread the previous posts .... I guess it wasn't as cheap and self-serving as I have portrayed .....

.... it did give me a chance to rage though ... that was cathartic .....

.... now that sounds cheap and self-serving on my part ..... ah,hell .......

    ;)

Yeah you got the music reference. Leonard Cohen poet extrordinaire and musical eccentric.

I agree in essence with a thread you started somewhere else .... I think we all have purged enough of our anguish here, and it's time to put our philosophical hats away and try to live with the future.

    Cheers.
