I understand. But even from just a winning the championship perspective, it can be arguable. To me, we are a high 40s win team as currently constructed, if they squeeze every win out of them, with some natural improvements in the young players. To contend for a championship you probably at least need to be in the high 50s. We are also uniquely positioned to sign a max player on top of this high 40s team in 2012, as opposed to giving up assets to trade for one. The question is, is it easier to do that and inch towards the high 50s(we could get close even without a max player but through other signings/trades), or to completely start over from the bottom up, for a SHOT to draft a player to re-build around, again. I don't think it is an easy question to answer. I have argued FOR tanking in the past, and really I am just playing devils advocate in this thread. And given the financial risks on top of all this, I think it is understandable the direction the team has headed. With all that said, I am comfortable with whichever path the team ultimately decides to take from here, knowing that smarter heads are in charge compared to myself.
I will give Morey this season til next summer to try to trade for that superstar that we need. If he still isn't able to get one by next summer's end, then we definitely rebuild.
And none of them have won anything. **** tanking. And **** wack "fans" that want to tank. Play young, build off that.
But that alone probably won't be enough. Sure, losing RA could cost us a few victories, but we need to jettison Luis and K-Mart if we are serious about collecting ping pong balls. The more interesting question is to which teams and for what assets.
All of them have had more playoff success then us recently, besides the rookie and Roy. Saying they haven't won anything shows what? It took us a decade to win with the best center on Earth. Would you rather have taken your chances with a stud like him or with a team full of average to above average players? We aren't going go win without a star. So unless you think one will suddenly decide to sign here, or that our assets can nab one (doubt it, see the potential stars in other packages that we will compete with).
You're right and I agree with you 100%. But do you see the true genius of Daryl Morey? He has taken steps to guarantee that the Rockets are moving in the right direction and making the necessary steps to acquire a superstar-caliber player. What makes people actually think that this team is capable of contending with the addition of a player like Nene or an Igoudala when we didn't even make the playoffs last year with one of the best coaches in the league. McHale has a proven track record as both a terrible coach and a horrible front office exec who's decisions have set the T-Wolves back a good 10 years. The only difference now is that instead of McHale calling the shots, it's a much smarter Morey. Another point I want to bring up is the fact that the Rockets won't be able to nab the 'cream-of-the-crop' players in the league because we absolutely have NOTHING that would attract any of those types of players (i.e LBJ, Wade, Kobe, Durant, Rose, Paul, etc). So, the best way to obtain these top-flight players is through the draft and as many people have pointed out before, we need do better(actually worse, by losing more games to obtain a higher pick) than our perennial mediocre status. McFail is the perfect man for the job, because he'll play the young players that we have (cultivating talent) while losing a crap ton of games without actually trying to tank games. This is the perfect cover by Morey.

dude i've been a rockets since the 70s and i wasn't even born then there are these 3 black dudes that are really good i forgot their names but they are definitely worth tanking for
It's way more fun to watch a below average team make the playoffs and pull off an upset to win a championship, than to watch a 50+ team win a championship. SAY NO TO TANKING!
every team sucks a year or two before they bounce back. i rather tank now and let miami la and celitics get old and be ready in 2014.
In the last 10 years there has only been two teams that have won a championship that drafted in the top ten. That was Miami and Boston. And Boston did not draft anybody that helped them win a championship.
Awesome. You're all up for tanking while you're clueless about the talent in the next draft. I rest my case.
I thought the point of tanking was to win a championship? So far mission failed by those teams. Again with Lebron, Melo, Bosh, Dwill, Amare and soon to be Howard and Paul all having left the franchises that drafted them, why again is it so important for us to draft our star? These guys have all become available and similar guys will continue to become available in the future. Just because a star hasn't wanted to come here in the last few years doesn't mean they absolutely won't in the future.
I don't follow college ball so I'll just take people's word when they say this next one is a deep draft. I don't mind if they team "tanks" as long as they don't announce it publicly and we're guaranteed a pic in the top 5. Otherwise known as, we just suck this season.
They did however draft Al Jefferson who turned into KG & Jeff Green who turned into Ray Allen via trades. So although the Celtics didn't win with those guys it enabled them to trade for all stars because they were highly coveted talent. The guys we have are mediocre talent, none of the guys on our roster will get us CP or D12. You draft someone with more talent aka Favours it gets you Deron Williams!! My friends laugh at me when I suggest a cp3 for Scola, Lowry, TWill & picks for CP3. When the clippers can offer a stud like EG for CP it can actually happen, heck even Lopez for D12 would be better then anything we can offer! As much as I'd love to dream of getting those guys it is highly unlikely, I'm not a fan of tanking but if it puts us in the picture to get Anthony Davis, Andre Drummond or Harrison Barnes I wouldnt be so mad.
It's time...It's time to get off the mediocrity treadmill and tank in some way, shape, or form. Also, if the Rockets do tank, Morey has to draft based on potential (he'll be forced to do so), which he said he doesn't do at the sloan sports conference.
