Game 3, series tied 1-1. 10th inning, bases loaded, one out. Eusebio absolutely nailed a one-hopper up the middle. WFW - playing in - lays out, has the glove almost get ripped off his hand making the catch, flys to his feet & gets the force at home by a step. Walt ****ing Weiss. I still have no idea how he made that play. "Walt ****ing Weiss made the single-greatest play I've ever seen in my life. The ball comes off the bat and I thought, `It's over.' But somehow he comes up with it. It was unbelievable." -- Larry Wayne Jones
There are a lot to choose from for me, but the two I think standout the most in my mind are: 1) Pujols homer- I was sitting down the left line in the club level and could see the ball bouncing in the train tracks. I was absolutely crushed. The worst feeling ever (sports related). 2) Buffalo- That was more of a prolonged slow march to the inevitable. I remember getting queasy when Reed or Beebe( I forgot) made it 24-35. Honorable mention 1) 97 WC Finals 2) 93 AFC Divisional Playoff game
Yeah, my dad was the same. He would always say "houston sports teams will find a way to lose, because that's the only thing they know how to do." Imagine the grin he was displaying over the phone though, when the Rox won their first championship and I was at Camp Pendleton in the USMC! Of course, previous history gave him all the excuse to that stance because, houston sports teams have collectedly been bad and also, notorious for their playoff blunders. I mean we are the virtuosos of playoff collapses. They have been so incredible, it's literally unbelievable. BTW, I voted for the Buffalo Massacre but, alot of the aforementioned definitely deserved a close second or honorable mention. Especially, the 99 playoff series with the Bravos, Walt "F-N" Weiss! It's STILL unbelievable what he did!
Are you talking about the Denver game? That was the year before the Buffalo game, so it gets overshadowed....but yes, that game was just as DEVASTATING. Elway converted 3 or 4 4th downs on that last drive. Each time, I thought there was NO WAY they could convert ANOTHER 4th down....and each time they did. In a lot of ways, that game was worse than the Buffalo game because it was just one drive at the end, where as the Buffalo game was an entire half.
No Jan '93 was the Buffalo Massacre, Jan '92 was Denver Choke Job Part II. Yes, the second one in Denver was far more excruciating. People in that game I will never forgive ... Jeffires for dropping a gimme TD that potentially would've won it for us or at least forced Elway to get a game winning TD instead and Richard Johnson for his bonehead chase at Elway and leaving Vance Johnson wide open for an easy 40+ yd gain and it of course, was just enough for David Treadwell. :04 ticks left and then, "good night, everybody!" Thanks alot, Dick!
I was actually talking about the Oilers vs Chiefs in the Dome. That was the year the Oilers were going to break through and they ran into Joe Montana. I will never forget how laoud the Astrosdome was that game, and the feeling walking out, realizing that that era of the Oilers was done. They never got it done.
Speaking of terrible Stros losses anybody remember game 2 of the 2001 NLDS? Tom Glavine just owned us and if I remember correctly the only decent hit the Stros got was a ground rule double by Tony Eusebio that just barely missed being a home run. OTOH Stro's pitching and fielding hold tough against the Braves and I believe the Stros set a playoff record for double plays. Stros lose 1-0 though on an UNEARNED RUN... Next game Chipper Jones blast one off of Octavio Dotel and Stros get swept again by the Braves..
