There is still a few left and they're -- ironically -- far more promising an alternative than anything the Democrats have to offer.

You can wink, but if you really understood, you wouldn't have made the statement. I'm sorry, but the November elections may very well be the most important in generations. If the GOP retains control, I will fear for the country even more than I fear for it now.

Even men like John McCain, who I used to have far more respect for, have bent over backwards supporting Bush, despite what he knows to be the facts and despite how he was treated running for President against him. True, he is doing something great right now in the Senate, along with a handful of other Republicans, and all the Democrats, and Powell finally grew a sack, but I absolutely disagree with what you said in your last post.

That's fine, we can disagree, it's not the end of the world, Deckard. I myself believe it would do the country 'good' for the GOP to suffer a setback in the next elections, but not because I think the Democrats are any better; I don't drink that 'Koolaid'...

If the Dems don't get the House, they may as well quit national politics. The GOP will retain the Senate. You heard it here first. ;)

In the last 10 or so years, it seems like the next election is always the most important. But the real election is 2008. 2006 is just a practice run. Sure, there is a lot at stake this year (especially in setting the tone for the 2008 campaign), but try and keep perspective. In 2008, the Dems will have a real opportunity to take all 3 branches of government even if the GOP does retain a razor thin majority in the House in November.

I want the GOP punished to the fullest extent possible for their lunacy over the last 4 years, which means losing both chambers in the current campaign. IMO, that would force them to trim off some of their lunatic fringe & pressure groups and appeal more to average citizens who aren't married to either party.

yeah right, like what? Right now, they are all not much different than Bush. They need to learn a lesson and get back from the far right.

Interesting. I think once you can actually see how incredibly evil US foreign policy is on ONE issue things open up intellectually. For instance many years of invasions in Latin America for the crassest monetary reasons and the training of torturers for Latin America to keep our collaborators the ultra rich in power.

Once you see this then you can see the US more objectively. You break out of the comfort zone we were all brought up in that the US is omehow the best possible country at all times and if we do evil it is just to prevent greater evil by the bad guys.

Accepting Bush's faults would destroy the guy's whole world view of Santa Claus and America is always right.

Question: would the guy have to virtually change his religion as many of these brainwashed working class Christians will have to do?

Is anyone really surprised that the man who presided over the most executions in history wouldn’t have any problems gutting the Geneva Conventions to sanction torture? I reel in horror that the United States would even consider what Bush wants to do.

you mean the last 6 years.

i want to see Congress exercise the subpoena power, to have W, Cheney, Rummy and Woeful Wits to testify individually.
    • the real reasons for diverting troops from hunting bin Laden in Afghan to removing WMD, then to capture Saddam, in Iraq

Who made the decision to pay US millions of $$$ to Chalibi (who has been in cahoots w Iran) for pre-War intelligence which turn out to be false.

Why didn't W, Cheney, Rice et al didn't show their faces in New Orleans on Tue or Wed, instead of Thurs. (Because on Wed, Cheney was still hunting, Condi was shoe-shopping in NY, and W had to fly over to San Diego to accept a gift from the US Military). once W and company lend their face to Katrina, staring on Thurs (3 days after the Katrina horror was shown on TV) the ball got rolling

Who authorized the leak to Judith Miller

Who authorized the leak of Valaries Plame's CIA identity

What was discussed at the secret meeting between Cheney and oil company CEOs

Without going into too much detail, my friend is a very strong Christian who has no problem disagreeing with other Christians. It's just on the Bush/Iraq issue that he's brainlocked. For example, he's a very strong union guy who dislikes Bush's ties to corporate fatcats and the oil companies. These and other issues are why I hope one day he will join me as a militant independent.

I think the key of his post was that americans are brainloacked with the idea of US can do no evil. If people open up their mind, they will see the evil things US did in parts of the world, and they will see why 2/3 of countries in the world are meeting in non-aligned summit in Havana and the summit features the theme of "US is evil".

I've given up on discussions with such people (except here of course). It's got to be tough to admit that you were so devastatingly wrong about such incredibly important things... I can see how people would want to put off that day of reckoning as long as they can. Unfortunately, the more you delay it, the more you have invested in avoiding the psychic confrontation. Having people talk to you about it probably just builds the walls a little thicker. It's like losing weight... nothing anyone says or does can make you unless you're ready to not eat fatty foods and get some exercise... people have to come to the realization themselves and want to wakeup... and I do believe most understand at some level the contradictions. If that's the case, we need to encourage these folks at that time, not berate them. Of course, if they are true Dead-enders and only hang around like-minded Neo-con anti-American types, then let loose with both verbal barrels.

    giddyup?!?!?! Calling giddy!

    ;)

Seriously though, not to derail the thread, but canoner do you really think that is one of the themes of the summit? The US is evil? I mean I'm probably one of the board's greatest critics of the present administration but by no means consider the US "evil."

I believe it's better to have a GOP controlled house, a Dem president; or a Dem controlled house and a Repulican president. It will require some smarts and COMPROMISE to get things done, so most of the irrational decisions can be avoided.

"evil" in the broader meaning. I suppose portraiting Bush as bloodsucking vampire is something. I also heard that most countries expressed supports for Iran's right to develope nuclear techonology. These countries discuss how to unite in order to counter the dominance of US in this post cold war era. And then you read surveys showing that people in other countries deem US as the greatest threat to world stability. It is not hard to figure out what they think of US, is it?

The truth is in the past, various administrations have done things harmful to local peoples in Latin American, African, and Asian countries. Things like giving chemical weapons to Saddam and backing Mobutu regime are pretty "evil" IMO. Things like overthrowing democratically elected Iranian government and backing the dictator Shah for 26 years of absolute despotism don't make other people look at you friendly.
