The word of 'Jealous' in Yao' mouth in Chinese is different from that In English.

i believe in global warming as much as i believe in these chinese articles and the translations of them...yao does not speak like this. he doesnt call francis big brother etc...its all made up or poorly translated

 

Do you speak Chinese? Do you know how Chinese talk? If not, I do not think you have any idea what you are talking about in this case.

 

Yao did not call Francis big brother? How did you know? Although I do not have a direct evidence for believing, I do not think it is from poorly translated, it is likely from Yao's mouth.

so if Yao meant "envy", please use that exact word in your translation, and don't use the word "jealous". The two words have big difference. Some ppl say "jealous" in Chinese has two meanings, one is "jealous", and the other is "admiring" (or "envy"). But remember that's Chinese "jealous" LOL, the "jealous" in English simply means jealous, sour grape. If you want to express "envy", please use that word. If you use the word "jealous", one one will take it as "envy".

Have you ever done translation before from foreign language? If not, stop complaining about people trying to translate for (free) to give other fans more news. If you don't trust the translation, don't read it.

 

I appreciate the translation. But be accurate! Otherwise you get the totally opposite effect. In this example, Pryuen wanted to say that Yao envyed TMAC, which is a good thing. But he used word "jealous", that's totally another meaning, and is negative to Yao's image, which I believe Pryuen or you don't really want. Got it?

 

Pryuen is already doing a very good job of translating, he is not 100% accurate but neither are the articles being translated in major publications or books published by large publishers, no one can get things 100% right. That is why I asked if you have done translation before, because then you would know how difficult it is sometimes to get the accurate meaning accross.

 

In the original article, the exact word used is 妒忌 which is Jealous. And the Chinese word for Admiring is 羡慕, which can also mean Envy.

It is different.

And when you read it together with the context of that part of the interview, you know that Yao Ming said at that time he felt a bit jealous of TMAC and NOT he admired or envied TMAC cos he was telling us that in that Game 1 vs Utah Jazz, he played to his best from start to beginning, and yet TMAC only erupted in 2H after managing only 1 point in 1H, but then he got all the credits for being the hero of the win.

As a matter of fact, there were NO HEROES. Losing in the 1st round of the playoffs= NO HEROES = NO "CREDITS"

The funny thing is that fans always complain Yao is 'soft'. When Yao shows some 'unsoft' behavior, the fans don't believe. Or, just being scared of 'unsoft' Yao?!

I think nothing is wrong with Yao even though he did say those words.

 

Actually jealous does not always mean the same in different context. Someone saying to a friend in a joking manner "I am so jealous of your achievement." is totally different then someone being jealous in a negative manner.

 

how can you connect "jealous" to "unsoft"? That's totally different. Unsoft is a good thing, but "jealous" omg that's totally a negative word when you use it to describe a person. I never see the word "jealous" brings positive image to any person.
