Max, I don't doubt that there is some kind of exotic assets shelter that would allow a rich person to qualify for Medicaid. But it's obviously in contradiction to the intent of the program. If I remember correctly, my mother would have had to spend her savings down to below $2,000 to become eligible for Medicaid. So if Fatty's uncle has set up this type of shelter, he's not legally committing fraud, but he's still a leech.
lots of people make this choice...at least lots of people who can afford to do. you're right though...i don't know a ton about it!
I'm pretty sure they look at your finances up two years prior, to try and prevent people from doing this.
read this somewhere. i know this is a true story... some lady in oregon was collecting welfare for 20+ years bc she was a widow. it turns out that her husband never really died. he just decided to leave one day. the social security administration found the discrepancy when the husband tried to apply for a drivers license in maryland 20+ years after his death. the difference here is that she wasnt willfully trying to decieve the government. in the case of the millionaire uncle on medicaid. if the government ever does find out that hes been receiving medicaid theyll make sure they get every penny back.
No Gifford, you don't know what you're talking about, at least not in this case. As of right now, for whatever way it was structured originally, it doesn't stop. My family even tried to. Regardless, you can insult me all you want, but keep insulting my family, and we are going to have a problem, big-time.
As I just stated, my family is trying to do everything lawfully. We have tried to stop it because it is no longer necessary. It can't be stopped, which is why I brought it up in the first place.

You can't really cheat the system if you're rich - you can only use the system in the manner in which it was designed to be used, if you know what I mean.
What exactly can't you stop? It doesn't send money to people and you're never forced to use Medicaid. .
Fatty, If you don't want people to comment about your family don't discuss their business in a public forum. That said, I shouldn't have speculated that your uncle was committing medicaid fraud based anything you write because the more you describe the situation, the more obvious it is that you're talking out your ass about this, just as you do about most topics you discuss here. According to you, your millionaire uncle is receiving monthly payments from a program designed to provide medical insurance to people in poverty, despite the fact that your family has actively tried get the government to stop. There is so much wrong with this story that I can only conclude you are completely misrepresenting your uncle's situation, big-time.
I don't know where to start. My folks' accountant has told them it can't be stopped. Which is why I put in the damn comment earlier. IT SHOULD BE. My Uncle got on Medicaid roughly 25 years ago. My Dad has always had a problem with it. Their mother just died. My Dad was the Executor. He went to his accountant to find out what was legal for my Uncle. Say what you want about him, but he has told my dad to make sure a good portion of his inheiritance goes to his stepdaughter, as well. She doesn't necessarily need it, but it is an awesome gesture. If you knew my family, you'd understand.
For the third time, what on earth "can't be stopped"?? What is this mythical money your uncle is being sent every month, given that Medicaid doesn't send people money.
My father was fairly rich and he received medicare benefits. The hospital preferred it over his HMO in some areas. He did have a living trust, but I wasn't enmeshed with all the intricacies of why he was covered. Didn't receive money from them though. Only Social.
Not when you're disabled. I DO LOVE THAT y'all are arguing over something that libs put in. I find it r****ded, as well.
