I lock my doors and put my wallet in my front pocket around whites. Finish what needs to be done and clear the area as soon possible.
The majority of responses are not "catty" in any way. Most of us are saying we have NO reaction to the term you posted and we are wondering what your thread is about. We still don't know, and well... [catty]we could use Occam's razor I guess[/catty]
giddy is just raging against the burden of being whitey and the inability to use the term "wetback" openly.
Before you embarass yourself, have you checked snopes.com about the veracity of the information in the chain email yet?
Most of the responses are catty or smart-alecky and just not serious. Pouhe called me a "prick".... I typed 3 words: The White Community as a thread title and asked people how that struck them. What I got, instead, is the typical belittling or attacking the messenger rather than addressing the question. Most, I think, are just being coy because I started the thread. To your credit, B-Bob, you were one of the few that did not stoop to those childish tactics. What prompted the question? I'm just wondering why it's okay to articulate a viewpoint from "the black community" but not from "the white community." The former is "fine" while the latter would be deemed "racist." Some of the more advanced thinkers on race relations think we should just ignore color describers. Such thinking would render the term "the black community" as undesirable as "the white community." Is there no choice but to take all the catty replies as a sort-of defense of the term "the black community?"
Your thread was smart alecky, actually just a taunt meant to express fatigue at having to acknowledge minority viewpoints or assertiveness about how they should be identified. An advanced thinker on race relations would wonder why and how the black community came to be labeled and originally formulated, and look to address any issues arising from that, rather than just mock black people for trying to self-identify, or patting yourself on the back a few post later for being able to get a rise out of commies and ******s.
Everybody already knew what you were driving at, which is why nobody wanted to play your game. There is an answer, btw, as to why we talk of one and not the other, but you stop at asking rhetorical questions instead of driving toward answers.
I'm not an African-American, so perhaps I'm off the mark here, and if I am I would like to hear a Black poster's opinion on this, but I always imagined that "Black" was just as much an ethnic marker as it was a racial one. Historically of course, when viewed through the White lens, "Black" and "White" have always been both racial connotations and denotations. However, in my mind, saying the "Black community" is like saying the "Italian-American community", or the "Irish-American community". The reason why the all-encompassing racial marker of "Black" is used is because Black Americans have lost whatever specific ethnic marker they may have had prior to coming over to America as slaves, due to centuries of cultural demolition at the hands of "Whites" ("White" being an entirely racial marker and not an ethnic one). This might be why, for example, Black Power can be construed as an ethnic struggle in a multi-ethnic society, whereas White Power can only be construed as an entirely racialist ideology with extremely negative implications. This is also why saying "the White community" would be superfluous, given that it is the standard majority, whereas saying the "Black community" may simply be indicative of a specific ethnic enclave.
I'm rarely in the D&D and I don't really know giddyup's M.O. enough to speculate about any ulterior motive, so I'll shoot. The White Community means absolutely nothing to anyone. Unlike minority groups, whites feel no need to attempt to control the perception of their views or express their plight collectively. As the majority, there is no fear of them being misrepresented or forgotten. Any smaller group (blacks, gays, women, asians, etc) will typically organize in some fashion because otherwise the majority will undoubtedly ignore them to meet their own needs/wants. This same structure exits in any culture, in any country, at any time, throughout history.
