Because those I-am-holier-than-thou moral highgrounders are seeking to use state law to legislate their morality rather than try to change local opinion. Its the converse of the lynching argument where they are saying this isn't just their own peculier mores but this is statewide mores. I personally believe there is a time to assert state and even federal power to address local issues but I think that there are a very limited range of issues. Sexy cheerleader routines just don't seem to rise to that level.
