what else do they have to back those 2 guys up? i would just guess in my opinion that would be about a #6 or #7 pick with those two guys. regardless if we keep those picks or not it will be very interesting to watch the knicks and see what happens. personally i really hope we keep those picks to take a chance. it could really set us up for the future. and it would be fun to check the scores of all those knicks teams rooting for losses. only thing that would suck is if they really did win the lotto and end up with the first pick. clutchfans would self destruct.
NY had the #8 last year, and only gave Utah the #9 pick this year. That concerns me because NY is only in a position to get better. Let's face it, they're one of the hotter teams on the FA market. They also have the option to re-sign David Lee as the worst case scenario. It wouldn't surprise me if they made the playoffs. I'm certainly not expecting the #2 pick unless they completely strike out in free agency and lose David Lee somehow.
Best possible outcome would be us getting the 2nd pick and the 6th pick in 2011 and 2012 respectively
Good points. But remember that this past year's Knicks team had David Lee, Al Harrington, Chris Duhon, [Larry Hughes/Tracy McGrady], and [Nate Robinson/Eddie House], none of whom would be back if the Knicks add two max guys. There is also some question as to whether Bill Walker (who showed a bunch of promise in his Knicks' stint) and Sergio Rodriguez will return as well. While the two max guys will likely be upgrades over Lee and Harrington (although there's no guarantee that the second guy will be clearly better than Lee), what about the rest of the roster? In the end, if the Knicks do "so-so" in free agency, I foresee a pick in the #7-12 range.
I really don't think the knicks have to worry about losing those players, especially Duhon and Tmac. If they can't find a 2nd max that's better than Lee they can just bring back Lee instead. This is like Miami wondering how to replace Qrich, Jermaine O'Neal, and Alston when potentially signing a max. In all honesty, no one cares about players on that level. Could you please define what "so-so" means in free agency?
The 2011 pick is way more expendible than the 2012 pick because of the quality of players that will be drafted. It has been projected that many players will avoid the draft and stay in till 2012 because of the CBA. Right now the 2011 pick, even with NY tanking, is the expendible one. With Martin coming off the books, Yao probably declining fast or not with the team due to free agency, 2012 could potentially be a rebuilding year and two first round picks will be very useful. The Rockets front office has to know that most if not all truely great franchise players are drafted by the teams they play for in their careers as rookies, and right now the "franchise players" will be in decline within the next few years. If we strike out on a player that can help us win a championship this next year... only three of Wade, Lebron, and maybe Bosh, It is not worth giving up our draft picks for a second tier player like Amare, Boozer, Johnson, etc because we still will not be a championship contending team with what we have to give up in the future. So, in other words, if we cant get Bosh, keep the picks and draft the next Michael Jordan.
It's hard to say how soon we should trade them, if at all. Obviously you want to trade them now if you think the Knicks are going to land LeBron or Wade, but any way it goes I'm only trading them if I get something substantial in return (IE Bosh or a top 6 pick). No projects like Anthony Randolph, for example. You have to hold out for something great, or give them a chance to be high lottery picks. The odds right now are that they'll be late lottery picks at best, but with the Knicks I'll take my chances on striking gold.
Here's my prediction: Lebron - Cavs/NY Wade - Miami/NY Bosh - NY/Miami/Rockets Dirk - NY Boozer - Suns Amare - NY/Miami/Suns Johnson - ATL/Miami So it looks to me like everyone's decision is based on what Lebron is going to do. If Lebron stay at Cleveland, then Wade will definitely stay at Miami and Bosh might join him or the Rockets.
So for us to land Bosh, we need James to stay at Cleveland. This will limit Bosh team to either Miami or Houston i think. Or Bosh could go to Lakers...but they dont' have valuable assets like us. Also by having James staying at Cleveland...it makes the NY's picks more valuable.
Not quite true. The Nets will apparently make a hard rush at David Lee in free agency. If the Knicks are not VERY careful, Lee (who is NOT a restricted free agent) may bolt for big money in New Jersey before New York can get around to "taking care of him". Also, Miami is not in the same boat as New York. Miami already has a superstar in D-Wade. Sure, he's a free agent; but he's already comfortable in Miami, can make the most money there, and is already on record as saying that he wants to re-sign there if they can show him that they are committed to winning. Also, Miami has a young stud in Michael Beasley. Sure, he's an idiot. But he's got great skill and is still improving. I'd take Beasley over anything (under contract) on the Knicks' roster. As for what constitutes "so-so" for the Knicks in free agency, I'd say something like re-signing Lee and bringing in a guy like Rudy Gay and perhaps one more decent player for the remaining $4-5M in cap room.
