Bayou Oaks townhouse residents can move back in after 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16. All other Bayou Oaks residents may move back in after noon on Monday, Sept. 15. Students with questions should call 713-743-6044 or 713-743-5390. Currently, there is no power at Cambridge Oaks or Cullen Oaks, but we have made arrangements for those residential students to study at night. The bold is the dumbest thing I read all day. UH please step it up.
wow, there are a bunch of morons on UH...so classes arent maditory, but you'll fall behind if you cant make it? it's like punishing those without power and water...
tey cannot decide WHEN classes are cancel nor can they decide when they will come back till a day before. I agree with the decision though. Basically just talk to your prof and they will probably end up pushing your tests back. You just need to get with your class and make a stand as a whole.
As a University of Houston graduate, I'm hardly surprised. I've never been to a school that cares less about their students. However, I'm pretty sure that UH was closed a lot longer for Rita, which is insane given that this storm actually affected the student body.
(This is long, but read through) while this is unconfirmed, I have my speculation. The reason there is a big rush to get back on campus is because they had planned out Dr. Khator's investiture for months now. I think the administration idiots are rushing back because they want to have some sort of ceremony and not let their 'planning' go to waste. its stupid. I think they are concerned with the welcome party over students who have no homes, gas, and of course power. It has nothing to do with 'normalcy.' I surveyed the campus personally on sunday, and I didnt see how there was any way possible for them to realistically open til wed/thurs, but they proved me wrong. Im shocked that they would do this, and they'll give excuses like the one DaDakota gave, but if you see the state of disrepair on campus and around the entire city, then it would only make sense for them to be respectful of situations and postpone classes. Now they have 'nonmandatory' classes in which students who can't go to class will be missing class material which they paid for and will still be tested over. I havent been able to study, and we still dont have power (im at a friends house, first time ive experienced electricity in over 72 hours.) Even if I could study, its really hard to concentrate when 90% of the city is screwed up... Im a student body elected-representative, and Im pretty pissed right now. Trust me, we're gonna give hell for this, and I hope other students will voice their displeasure as well to the administration in any way possible. (i gotta get back home now, so i dont know when ill be back on. stay safe! go coogs!)
Hear hear. Going to school or work when you don't have any gas, can't charge your phone, can't withdraw any money, can't deposit your paycheck, can't take a shower, can't buy water or ice or gas or produce, can't leave your pitch black house after 9 p.m. is NOT "GETTING BACK TO NORMAL." I just blew $140 I don't really have to stay in a motel in Brenham, buy gas, recharge my phone, take a shower, wash my clothes and eat a hot meal. I'm broke even though I have my paycheck in my wallet. The banks all closed more than 24 hours before the storm even got anywhere near landfall. The day before payday. I'm going back in the morning to my dark house. Turning on the ****ing electricity will get things "back to normal." U of H (and anyone else requiring people with no power, water and/or gas to go to a non-essential job or anything else) has a lot of damn nerve.
lol Pwned I wanted to say the same thing but I'd be called a hater. The scary thing is that he actually believes in his lunacy, almost Charles Manson like.
student body should show their displeasure by just not going this week. if i was a professor i would cancel all my classes until monday. isn't there a week off before finals? the school should have just canceled the entire week and have that week as a makeup.
I sent an email to the Pres but it won't do anything. As an undergrad a few years ago I learned one thing. Undergrads are the lowest form of life on campus. The thing they should have done is opened the campus this week with a curfew that stuck with the Houston curfew. Not holding classes but allowing students to study in AC, with power and hot food. Then next week open classes. Next monday is going to be much much better conditions in Houston than tommorow.
If you guys want to show displeasure you need to protest classes. If you are able to go to class, go sit down in the admin buildings and do a silent protest in the AC.
after watching the news and seeing how bad the gas situation is right now, there is no way in hell i'm going to class tomorrow.
I'm seriously hoping UH-D closes the rest of the week. I still don't have power and there is no gas in the city. I don't know how I'll be able to drive from Sugar Land to Downtown on a quarter tank of gas. They should probably cancel the next few days because most of the public school districts are. If not I'll be pretty pissed.
I'm inclined to believe this, as the university's decision does not make any sense at all. People don't have gas. The school itself isn't ready. What is this useless "optional classes/no exams" deal? Who the hell has exams in week 3 anyway? What are we, sheep? I'm not going to class this week, that's for sure. I don't have gas to burn.
per uh.edu Khator Investiture Postponed The Sept. 18 Investiture of Dr. Renu Khator and all attendant events have been postponed until further notice.
