Breast feeding is okay and it is natural. Breast feeding in public and in open view is not okay. It is considered indecent. I think Burger King had the same issue a few months when the store manager kicked out a lady who was breast feeding her child in open.
Pretty sure the women and her kid wasn't pelted with stones in those cases. Although I don't think Islam has much to do with this, just dumb people. (the pelting with stone part)
Posting this is just pathetic. Is this how hard one goes to criticize the Islamic faith. For starters, this is from a propaganda website. Secondly, breast feeding in open is indecent ANYWHERE. I hope my neighbor and his wife don't have sex in front of me and I hope my neighbor's wife doesn't breast feed her child in front of me. I certainly do not condone pelting the lady. That was wrong. However, let's not make her action out to be totally acceptable and let us not pretend that we as a society accept such behavior in open. We don't.
I'm sorry but breast feeding is NOT indecent. It might not be appropriate in public because some people get uncomfortable but to equate breast feeding a child with a couple having sex in public is a real stretch. I sense a lot of hostility and intollerance in your post.
I realize this is a side topic but it is a subject of great relavence to my life right now and this post seemed very incensitive to nursing mothers. Breastfeeding in public is very common and accepted in Europe so saying it is not accepted "ANYWHERE" is a bit of a stretch. (Of course, sex in public isn't that uncommon in some parts of Europe either but people are a bit less open about it.) In any case, most people I encounter don't seem to be upset by it as long as the mother is being somewhat modest. You have probably seen more women breastfeeding than you realize, I friend of ours had a whole conversation with a woman who was holding her baby on her lap without realizing she was breastfeeding. The trouble with asking women to breastfeed only in the privacy of their own homes is that for most women that means they can never venture away from home much at all during the first eight months of their baby's lives. If you factor in the time the mother spends putting the baby to sleep, letting the baby sleep, and changing diapers as well as feeding, a mother would have about 45 minutes to get the baby into the car drive to whatever she was going to do (say grocery shopping, going for a walk in the park, etc.), do the activity and get home again otherwise she might have to nurse in public or expose a naked baby bottom while changing a diaper. In short, she would be spending the first year of motherhood locked away in her house. This attitude of treating breastfeeding as though it is an indecent act is one of the main reasons why so many mothers use formula even though their doctors keep telling them it is far from ideal. Women living below the poverty line in America are the least likely to nurse even though it is considerably more economical and this isn't likely to change while people continue to overreact to nursing. But back to the discussion about Islam. It has been rather interesting to read this thread. There were a number of points I had not heard made before, some of which were even enlightening

You do know that the issue has nothing to do with the actual act of breast feeding, and everything to do with public nudity, right? The whole idea is to not expose a woman's breast to the public. Public nudity is what Islam has against it. Pretty simple really. Islam doesn't want a woman's exposed breasts on public display. That's about all.
I am shocked! Did you actually find anything said in this thread "enlightening"? Just kidding. Anyways, let me just point out that there isn't an actual law in Islam that says "breast feeding in public is forbidden", instead, it really comes down to a pretty simple reason as to why doing it is contradictory to Islamic teachings: this means you would expose your chest area to the public, and that is forbidden in Islam. So, if it can be done more descretely, or if a woman's chest area isn't exposed while she breast feeds, then it shouldn't be a problem.
Intolerence of the natural act of breast feeding in public is backward. But STONING a women while doing it is not just backward, it is criminal. And....PATHETIC !! DD
What is unfortunate is when religion is blamed for cultural practices. Just because Muslims stoned a woman for public breast feeding doesn't mean Islam calls for it. What is more unfortunate is when followers of a religion are deemed the be-all-end-all representation of said religion. Many Muslims may be backward and intolerant, holding an incorrect representation of their religion. Don't hold that as a representation of Islam. Come up with some facts of authentic Islamic jurisprudence or examples during the time of Muhammad and his companions, the era which is held in esteem by scholars as THE representation of Islam in its entirety. Show me that before you come here and post on this board that John Muslim in 3rd World Country just did so and so crime, jumping to a generalization of Islam itself. I'll in return point to you the millions of Muslims in the modern world who live their lives to your standards. And then I'll point to you that there is nothing in Islam that called for that crime.
