    :(

But seriously, outside of Charles Bronson movies, the incidents where a handgun repels 'multiple predators' are vanishingly few, whereas mass killings are all too common.

We're in deficit handgun use. Thousands of innocents, and relatively few "bad guys."

I know it's going anywhere trying to argue w/ whole bunch Texans about gun controls. But this just angers me ... So I am going to take it on gun ownership.
What gun control? Just flat out ban the dammn thing, weed it out in stages and deal with it. You don't need guns and the world without guns floating around in Walmart is much better.

The earlier (mis)information was that handguns were used by the shooter. The information now is that it was a .223 caliber assault rifle, capable of shooting six rounds per second.

If a handgun was used, I doubt if any legislation would come out of this tragedy. However, given the weapon used, perhaps there will be a push towards new legislation regarding assault rifles. At a minimum, perhaps a reinstatement of the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004.

..no one is to blame but the gunman..

If this is the attitude, the same tragedy will happen again and again.

Your real example is called an anecdote or a datum. I'm talking about data, and my point stands. It was much more than a joke, so perhaps you should reread it.

You and your researched one-off story, and your Charles Bronson fantasies of repelling a gang of evil and terribly inept, underequipped bad guys stand in stark contrast to a national crisis where innocent people get slaughtered in public. Find me thousands of bad guys killed, and then we can talk apples to apples.

There is just no comparison. As someone who had a shotgun for home protection for many, many years, I argue it is more than enough for 99.9% of the fantastic cases of home invasion one could encounter.

Is is from the 1980s dude... West Germany? Crime in the US has fallen nearly 40% since the 1980s.

I used to think the Koch brothers were just rich, self-centered assholes. Now, I'm thinking they might be just plain evil.

You can argue about a lot of stuff around guns, but I think it is blindingly clear that the NRA works for gun manufacturers and not the average gun owner or sportsman. Not to mention that ALEC is one of the most insidious organizations this country has ever seen.

Thank you for that. I particularly enjoyed the woman in a Wyoming nail salon who shot someone who may have been doing nothing wrong at all.

Anyway, this is my last post to you on the topic, and with respect. We haven't changed one another's opinions one iota, as per usual on the internet.

Another poster (bongman) in another thread found this via an abcnews blog:

    http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/07/gun-deaths-a-familiar-american-experience/

A research journal tallied the numbers and found that, if you take the 23 richest nations on Earth, and you looked at all the children in these countries who lost their lives to gun violence, 87% (nearly 9 in 10) of the children are American children.

We have a national problem. Maybe gun laws are not part of the solution, but when enough people are sick of it, when enough parents are fed up with living like this, then things will change. And gun laws will be on the table.

Cheers. May your home never be invaded! And mine either.

Thanks, I did not realize I posted in the wrong thread. I do not like the idea of banning guns but we need to look at those numbers and ask ourselves what we are doing indifferent than other countries.

so in your opinion the new poster should say 6,000 and change?

That changes everything, and completely refutes his point.

Yeah, I like that one too. Though I gotta say I like all the ones on the page. They show that an "assault weapons" ban would not stop people from defending their home and businesses.

Lol. Great point. So if gun murders went down 40% every 20 years how many hundreds of years would it take to get down to Canada's 52 and how many people would be dead?

Too many crazy people with guns.

Pre-sale background checks for gun purchases should include checks for history of mental illnesses or disabilities.

Assault Rifle bans lead to banning handguns.
