Why is either weapon needed by non-military and non-law enforcement people?

The dissolution of the family unit is surely a contributor. Guns have been around even when supposed hi capacity mags have been around for a long time. When we see these issues of gun abuse it is by those that are a aberration of any trend whatsoever. The crazy wacko that needs to be fixed with mental health is lacking in this country, but so is the fact is the hysteria of fear of guns from mass shooting is woefully misplaced. My car is a weapon if I aim it at you and your family...if I abuse my car driving ability, you don't take cars away from those responsible...you focus on the the people that wrong ...but to take sporting rifles away due to normal capacity mags makes so little sense when the threat of being the victim of such a sporting rifle over the last 10 years is less than the chance of being a victim of a lightning strike...

We don't base what we can have on "need" in this country...if we did a lot of things can be justified to be taken away in the name of saving lives

Lawrence O'Donnell does a great job on pointing out the insanity of the NRA's statement:

Please offer up that lightening strike analogy to the parents of the 20 dead children in CT. Or even those whose kids weren't killed, I am sure they will be comforted by their good fortune that it wasn't a lightening strike.

We aren't discussing lightening strikes... but the easy access to assault weapons such as the one that killed the 20 kids in CT.

Why do you consider the .223 Bushmaster "sporting rifle" with "normal capacity" magazine? Sporting? Normal? For what??

Why can't I have a bazooka? Or tank? Armor piercing bullets would be neat too. Must be a lot of fun to have them. I don't think the additional danger to public safety (and in the case of armor piercing bullets, safety to law enforcement personnel) should limit my second amendment right to have and use these, even if I really don't need them.

    Says who?

And even if it were, how would you go about fixing that? Posting armed guards in every house?

How about focusing on practical solutions, rather than contriving some "social decline theory".

(FYI, violent crime is at historic lows, homicide keeps on declining, and divorce rates are actually declining too. Doesn't really fit into social condemnation from moralizers.)

Yea, I was actually wrong about that. To be considered an assault rifle here, a rifle needs to meet three criterion. A pistol grip, removable magazine and be semi-automatic. As for the murder rate, California is big and has big city problems. You can have murders with one round. These murders here are usually gang related and /or not random. That's never going to stop. It's the random mass shootings that the 10 round limit and button addresses. To my knowledge, after the North Hollywood affair (which prompted the rules), that hasn't happened afaik (at least with California legal guns).

Edit. I don't think it's just a button you press. I think you need some kind of external tool to remove the magazine to have it legal.

This made me laugh. Kill anything you want... earmuffs.

Don't be ridiculous. That was entirely uncalled for. You should examine your own brain, OK?

It is called a bullet button, because you can press it with a bullet. You just can't press it with your finger. There are gloves you can buy that have a metal piece attached to the middle finger to get around that issue though. There are tons of youtube videos that illustrate both the button itself and various "tools" to eject the magazine.

I seriously don't know what you're talking about. I haven't read the entire thread. Some of us have been busy preparing for Christmas.
