I think the Obama campaign should blast this quote over and over to every place they can. Surrogates should repeat it over and over. Clips should be plastered everywhere, etc. It's the most effective counter to the McCain strategy. Basically, belittle the strategy and repeat the message over and over that the McCain campaign is small and childish.

that's totally unbelievable$##)%#@)! you're saying people in the oil & gas business are against a plan that takes money out of their pockets and puts it elsewhere.

Having spent some time in the industry myself, it is one of the greediest out there. There is something inherent in oil itself that makes it a dirty, greedy industry. Typically old-line male dominated thinking. Picture Dick Cheney. Almost all they care about is money, at the expense of everything else.

I'm not trying to take a stab at capitalism or anything. There are people throughout the business world, regardless of industry, who are also this way.

But having worked with businesses across multiple industries now, my view on the oil industry is even stronger. I'm glad I got out when I did. When you're in the industry - and heck, even today, as I still work with a company that has assets in the gulf - you find yourself not caring about what happened to the environment as a result of that underwater pipeline burst but how bad the failure was, revenues lost, cost to repair, etc.

Not all energy professionals are bad. But pointing out what executives think about an issue where their pocketbooks are at play, especially in this industry, is kind of pointless.

Then he'd be derided as "elitist". Which is absolutely hysterical when you see who the GOP's nominee for first lady is.

    Yet another mathematical analysis...

    http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/608/

"We could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tune-ups."

Barack Obama on Wednesday, July 30th, 2008 in Springfield, Mo

Not overinflated (though it sounds like it)
    True

Sen. Barack Obama injected a startling claim into the debate on energy, asserting in a Missouri town hall meeting that the country could save more gas from inflating its tires and tuning up its cars than would be gained from drilling more off its coasts.

“There are things that you can do individually, though, to save energy,” Obama said in the July 30, 2008, appearance. “Making sure your tires are properly inflated — simple thing. But we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires, and getting regular tune-ups. You could actually save just as much.”

Sen. John McCain and his allies — who advocate lifting the federal moratorium that bans drilling in some areas of the Outer Continental Shelf off the U.S. coasts — immediately mocked Obama for the claim. The McCain campaign even offered to send “Obama Energy Plan” tire gauges to anyone who sent in a donation of $25 or more.

The McCain campaign’s assumption seemed to be that Obama’s claim was utterly implausible. And, we admit, it kind of sounds that way. But is it?

Under-inflated tires — to say nothing of poorly tuned cars — are actually a serious problem, as government agencies, industry groups, conservationists and outside experts have been saying for years. (The Obama campaign even cited a number of instances when prominent McCain supporters echoed the call for more public awareness about tire inflation.)

“A lot of people are driving around on severely under-inflated tires,” said Robert Sinclair, Jr., a spokesman for the American Automobile Association. “Try riding a bicycle with under-inflated tires. It’s hard for the human engine to push it ahead. Pump it up, it seems like you’re gliding on air.”

The same thing happens with a car. Under-inflated tires can lower gas mileage by .4 percent for every 1 pounds-per-square-inch drop in tire pressure, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

The best estimate available, by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is that at least a quarter of drivers are cruising around on under-inflated tires. In April, the Rubber Manufacturers Association, the Auto Club, the California Highway Patrol and Yokohama Tire Company used those statistics, along with Department of Transportation and Automobile Association of America data, to extrapolate that 2.8-billion gallons of gas are lost every year due to under-inflation of tires.

That’s an estimate, to be sure, and not one from a published, peer-reviewed study. But remember, Obama said we “could” save all the oil available from offshore drilling in the protected areas — not we “would” — so if the claim is merely plausible he’s on solid ground.

So how much oil is available offshore? According to the latest assessment from the Minerals Management Service, the mean estimate of undiscovered technically recoverable crude oil in the Outer Continental Shelf areas that are currently under moratorium is about 18-billion barrels (see here.)

But it couldn’t all be extracted immediately. The agency estimates that if the moratorium were lifted production could start by 2017, and by 2030, oil companies could be producing 2.4-million barrels of oil instead of 2.2-million. That’s 200,000 more barrels per day.

After refining, a barrel of oil can produce up to 19.5 gallons of gasoline, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. So that’s 3.9-million more gallons of gasoline per day, or 1.4-billion gallons of gasoline per year.

And remember, an estimated 2.8-billion gallons of gas are lost annually due to under-inflated tires.

And we didn’t even talk about tune-ups. (Repairing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test improves gas mileage by 4 percent on average, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Fixing a more serious problem, such as a bad oxygen sensor, can improve mileage by up to 40 percent, the agency says.)

All of the numbers in this analysis are estimates, we should emphasize. Oil industry experts told us estimates of the amount of oil offshore and how fast it could be extracted vary widely, and the Energy Information Administration’s number is fairly optimistic. Likewise, it’s highly unlikely any public awareness effort could change behavior enough to save 2.8-billion gallons of gasoline per day.

But it’s clearly within the realm of possibility that tire inflation and tune-ups could save more than offshore drilling could produce. So we find Obama’s claim to be True.

I think the McCain campaign is already getting that message out.

The irony of the past few weeks can't be lost on me.

Obama has tried unsuccessfully to make the label of John McBush stick for months.

But here - by hiring Karl Rove acolytes, McCain is coming across a whole lot like Bush and I can just see the disgust people are having - it's just like Bush!!!

This is going to completely backfire for McCain.

The line seems to have worked. McCain concedes Obama was right about tire pressure.

Totally agree, Mccain doesn't know how to play the frat boy politics because he's not one of them. He doesn't know ho to effectively demean your opponent while looking like the expert when you truly know nothing. that was one thing bush was a master at while campaigning, bush also knew how to stat just far enough out of the way so he wouldn't be associated with the attacks. Mccain is out of his element and its obvious

You forgot the part after the "..."

"But he (McCain) kept up his broad criticism of Obama on energy: “I … don’t think that that (inflating tires) is a way to become energy independent.”

we can count on giddy to keep up the good fight. you're right mccain was still right about inflating tires being obama's energy dependence plan.

Wasn’t forgotten; it’s just not relevant. Nowhere did Obama say inflating tires was the solution to the becoming energy independent. McCain is once agian distorting what Obama said.

Yet that McCain agrees that proper inflation levels is a good thing you reinterpret that as agreeing with Obama and think it is news-worthy?

yeah, its not news worthy when you ignore that whole initial reaction going as far as sending out the tire guages.

So you're saying he's still distorting? Gotcha.

How is that distorting? Obama has said several times now since last week that inflating tires will save as much as oil as we'd get from offshore drilling. That's not a distortion. Those are his exact words.

Just because McCain acknowledges that properly inflated tires increase gas mileage on a car doesn't mean he agrees that it would equal the oil available from offshore drilling.

Obama made a dumb statement based on....well, I don't know what he based it on, but he needs to let this go. Yes, the media is doing their best to cover for the guy, but if he's not careful, this is gonna turn into Carter telling people to wear a sweater so they lower their thermostat.

Yes or no, is Obama's energy plan centered on people keeping their tires inflated and their cars tuned-up?

And this will be my third time to ask you for any evidence that the statement is not true. You previous link has already been debunked, and two different non-partisan mathematical analyses confirming his numbers have been provided. Unless you have any evidence that the Energy Department estimates are incorrect, your argument doesn't hold up.

So you were one of the ones Obama was talking about that is somehow proud of your ignorance.

If people inflate their tires and get regular tune ups then it will more than equal oil from new off shore drilling. That is a fact. Obama was correct.

Until you have some credible evidence that says differently you seem to be arguing that Obama is wrong because he doesn't agree with your stance which seems based on ignorance.
