I think the fact that Powerline has exaggerated the actual number by a factor of over 30 calls their other assumptions and figures into question enough that I'd prefer to look elsewhere for such analysis.
I've always watched my tire pressure....kept them rotated....balanced....aligned....etc. Gas prices are still killing me. Not sure what the point is here....getting everyone else to do this? And that'll drop the price of oil? This is news? Anyone who knows remotely anything about cars ought to know this. I'd hate to have to count on others to do something to help lower my gas prices.
How exactly are you going to do it yourself without any help from anybody else? Homebrew drilling and refining?
Well, either that, or if you don't do it already and do start doing it, it'll save you money by spending less on gas. Given that it was in response to a question about what individuals can do to improve their situations, that would make sense.
See below....I'll happily rely on drilling and production, but not individuals to properly inflate their tires. I think we need to drill, and we need to drill NOW. Maximize our resources while we work on a long-term solution. That's what I want.
that's fine, but the facts show the tune-ups and tire care will earn multiple times the amount of oil that drilling will produce.
That's good enough for me. I have peered into the mind of T-J and believe me, there is infinite space in there.
The problem though with that analysis is that those reserves aren't proven yet. While they could be more than the estimate they could also be much less. At the sametime it will take years for those to come online and just adding more supply is only a temporary solve to a long term problem. Conserving has an immediate affect now and is the needed step to eventually doing away with dependence on foriegn oil. ON top of that it doesn't cost any new taxes or subsidies.
you do know that drilling now will hardly increase the supply which means prices will NOT get affected while it has been proven that slightly decreasing demand CAN significantly decrease the price http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080805/ap_on_bi_ge/oil_prices
The facts show that if you take care of your vehicle, it will run better and more efficiently. This news is as old as the internal combustion engine itself. Are you really willing to put your faith in everyone else to lower your gas prices? I'm sure as hell not. As near as I can tell, no one is arguing against conservation.
I do know that. I also know that no one really knows anything until they do it. Regardless, I am also aware that it takes time to get it from underground to my gas tank. My only point is that we have to do SOMETHING while working on longer-term solutions. That 'something' is both conserving AND utilizing our resources. I sure as hell am.
I don't know about putting my faith in it. But I'm all in favor of publicizing it and getting the information out there so that more people do it, and it will help increase the chances that oil prices go down.
