What a bunch of drunks... I try to tip well, especially at restaurants as i use to wait tables College...However, if the service sux, I tip around 10%...If it really sux, I don't give jack...I personally think we shouldn't have to tip and have the wait staff be on salary, but that's just me... At bars, I usually tip $1 per beer at first, if I pay with cash, especially if its a girl... I'd rather pay a tab as FFB suggested as you tip less but its still respectable... Buffets, $1 unless at Furr's where the lady gets you crap, then $2.... Car Wash, $1 as those guys work there azz off, but I always ask them to wipe it down more to get my $1 worth... Haircut, well, I do it myself now, but I use to give $3 - $5 per cut... Carryout, $1 or $2 as there is some work involved...
Back when I used to work in a restaurant, the waiters (including me, but only once) would spit in the food of people who don't tip well. here's a tip for everyone BTW, if you're not going to tip well or are gonna be rude to your waiter, NEVER EVER ask for them to doggy bag your fad. This advice could save your life. My friend used to dip his balls in the water pitcher when he didn't like a particular customer. Everyone should stay home and eat, restaurants are a lot of pressure to work in sometimes and being a waiter can really get to you.
Whoa whoa.. not saying they make $2 an hour. But when I worked at Starbucks a while back for a summer, I got paid $5.75/hr + tips. Don't feel obligated to tip them... (though it does fit the "product vs. service" thing proposed earlier)...but don't assume they're making a ton of money either. Maybe independent coffee shops pay better--I don't know.
Holy crap...I heard about this type of stuff and make sure you tell us which rest. you worked at...I worked for Pappasitos and guarantee you none of this happened there...
Yeah, hate the guy in the bathroom with the soap and towels. Really hate it when he's just handing me a fancy napkin that's thrown away instead of a towel and then expecting a tip. Really REALLY hate it when he pumps the paper-towel dispenser, tears it off, and gives it to me...and then expects a tip. But if the guy is nice, seems nice, or is older and seems like this is his only job at this point in life, I try to tip. I'll usually say "I'll get you next time".. and I'll get him the 2nd or 3rd time. If I use the bathroom 5 times, I'll tip him $2 once or something.
I did not know that. I was just going off the words of two friends (one in a downtown Chicago shop, one in rural Arkansas, pretty wide disparity but same brand) who were making 9 bucks an hour. I don't go to coffee places much (tea drinker, because I'm a sissy), but I'll re-think it next time I go in.
Personally I think the whole gratuity custom is stupid. They should just pay the servers and others adequately and charge prices to cover it. People say that it is better this way so that you get better service but this explanation is nonsense. You can still complain to the manager if the service is bad or just not go to that place. There are lots of countries where people are not given gratuities. I have not noticed that they perform worse than here. In fact they may perform better and be less stressed out from worrying about people stiffing them.
-The difference in change in the tip jar. -Don't usually go to one, but probably a buck for a normal job. -50 cents per person -1 dollar is customary -1 dollar -2 bucks...but I should tip more if I know the person Some of these numbers get inflated when I'm on a date, I can't help it... I know some Asian people including my family tip 10%, but the waiters might expect more from other people. As for being disgruntled, I guess they take out their anger by not cleaning the restrooms.
So I was at Brian O'neals again to day for happy hour. I had a tab and tipped the bar tender 20% as I normally. Do SO at the last second I decide to get one more drink. Wells were 1.75. There was anew bartender so i just left three. Percentage wise it sounds ridiculous but what does everyone do in scenarios like that?
I never did before but after getting in my last big argument in Hangout over tipping, I started doing it. I still think tipping is stupid and should be for good service. There is a minimum wage in effect. I know waiters get paid less than minimum wage but the restaurant has to make up the difference if they don't meet the minimum wage. Which is never. So that argument really is moot.
I would do the same thing. If I had a 5 or something I would still leave 1.25. I feel stupid leaving a dollar and taking a quarter back.
Man, I picked upa few slices from Late Nite Pie an hour ago. My bill was like 7.68. I apid, the chick handed me my cash and then just stood there while I was counting it and putting it in my wallet. I ended up leaving here a dollar and the change. For some reason I felt obligated to leave her somthing. That could have bought me a pack of gum in the morning If anything I should be tipping the guy in the back making the pizza. It took her 5 min utes to ask me what I wanteed even though the bar was empty.
-carry out orders - never tipped for that. I felt I needed to one time cuz the carry out person seemed 'left out' from the tipping and it was a way to 'include' them? -guys who dry your car at Mr. Carwash - I leave $2, but might start leaving 1 -waiter/waitress at a buffet - $2 cuz I leave a lot of utensils for them to pick up -bartender when you just get a bottle of beer (not a mixed drink) - $1 per -valet parking guy (I know you tip him, but how much?) never used a valet guy. now I know how much to tip from here. -person who cuts your hair - never tipped a hair stylist, but I haven't gone to a barber in 15 years, since my mom was paying for me. At the bar I usually pay in installments for whatever reason, $4-$5 every 2-3 trips or whatever, paying out with cash the first trip. Too lazy to pay out cash if my tab's on a card so I write in a decent amount in the end and will take them being mad at me and slow service during. Not understanding the clarification at the end but that seems like incorrect calculations. If someone gets 10% but they only get 5% that means they got 50% of their total tip deducted. If a waiter makes $80 for the day, bus staff gets $4 of that (maybe that's what you were trying to say but I wasnt sure...) I'm not a big fan of gratuities. Its all predicated on you BEST tip as incentive for them to do a job cuz you stand to lose out in service or having food get unsanitary. We tip pizza guys from fear-of something, not cuz they do an outstanding job. I worked in a restaurant and understand the aggravation of getting stiffed on tips and heared the constant complaining from waiters behind the scenes. Still there's expectations all around now - tip the mailman during Christmas, trash collectors, baristas, heck mechanics might start leaving a tip jar...I do try to not be cheap about it and have understanding, and there are people who do deserve compensation for going above the regular call. But because an employer reduces their workstaff to almost panhandling they should now have us being "compassionate" putting it in our heads to help the little guy out? (So the company can save a buck?)
Jeez... Just go to fast food places. You realize that tips are split equally or someone gets paid more. I'm tired of this. People who don't understand tipping should move to Switzerland. Everything there is incorporated. Enjoy!
Well, last night I paid by credit card, to pay the tip at once at the end of the night...The damn waitress gave my Amex to another dude...I wasn't going to tip her, as I didn't have any cash, but redefined stepped in and gave her a couple of bucks...I probably wouldn't have given her a tip, for f'n up, but I did get free food and beer because of it... Also, I think its dumb to have the bathroom guy expecting a tip just by gettting you a paper towel...That doesn't deserve a $1 IMO...
Sorry to bump this, but i went out for Sushi last night and sat at the sushi bar...The waitress comes and gives us the paper that we hand to the sushi guy...The sushi guy does all the work...We order water and that's it...We run out of water and the sushi guy tells someone to get us water...I gave the guy 8 bucks and felt obliged to give the girl something, but do they split it? Normally, I tip 15% - 20% at a restaurant, depending on service, but she didn't do anything...Wondering what you guys do...
