carry out...I'll usually go about 10% if it's a credit card receipt with a tip line on it. I always pay with a CC Dry my car...well I get my car washed at a place like that about twice a year. But never knew I was supposed to tip them. Will start.. Buffet...$1-$2 per person at our table (usually 1 per) Bartender...$1. But i'll often start a tab Valet...$3-$5 Haircut...I started going to a decent place (non-chain). So I tip probably an average of $4 or $5 (depends on the cash in my pocket that day, but I make up for it if I tip low one time)
i went to a chinese food restaurant two nights ago. i drove my car to get there. there is a dining room. but they obviously prepare a ton of carry-out and delivery orders. instead of putting my food on a plate and worrying about it's appearance, they pack it in styrofoam and place it in a bag. sorry...i don't see the difference between that and fast food.
Damn, ya'll are fast. So... back to my original question... do I tip her? you know... that little : confused : guy right there has ^ BLACK question marks on him which blend in to the background color... he looks sad, but not "confused" on the dark Cf.net theme... so sad...
Hmmmm.....being a girl I never really have to tip so I probably tip more than average. I get yelled at for leaving ok waitress big tips, but the ones that ignore me and totally flirt with my boyfriend tend not to get tips. But I guess I tip around 25- 30% But heres what I would tip. -carry out orders- umm don't really do carry out but I usually give the delivery driver a buck or two. Three if its really cold outside. -guys who dry your car at Mr. Carwash hmmm yeah that guy is usually my boyfriend. Considering that I don't have a car i don't have this problem but I'd probably give him a buck. -waiter/waitress at a buffet depends on how nice they were but normally some where around 3-5 bucks. -bartender when you just get a bottle of beer (not a mixed drink) With the exception of the time I turned 21 I've never bought my own drink so I dunno. I'm not really a bar person so I only order drinks when we go to dinner so we don't tip the bartender. But if I went to a bar and bought a drink I'd tip around 3 bucks. My best friend is/was a bartender and they really do live on tips. -valet parking guy (I know you tip him, but how much?) Like a buck. Maybe two if he doesn't mess up your car or he's fast. -person who cuts your hair She charges me 60 bucks so if she expects a tip then she's crazy. According to my cousin who used to work at Olive Garden, they prefer cash tips because they have to report tips at the end of the night and credit is automatically reported. Then they take the amount of your tips outta your paycheck so you only make like $2 an hour. So you make more money with cash tips.
I'm not really talking about Chinese. Carry-out/delivery is a huge part of their business usually. That's basically what they're there for. I was more referring to places where preparing a carry-out order is more involved and not as common; a Pappadeaux's, for example. I still don't know what driving your car to the place has to do with anything.
Not to sound cheap, but isn't tipping an option b/c as long as you pay your bill the tip is just a bonus, correct? A tip is customary but not mandatory, correct?
bartenders and waiters make below minimum wage, as they rely on tips. Not cool to not tip... -carry out orders (Usually $2-$3, as they don't do much) -guys who dry your car at Mr. Carwash (Don't go there) -waiter/waitress at a buffet (Don't eat buffets) -bartender when you just get a bottle of beer (not a mixed drink)-$1 -valet parking guy (I know you tip him, but how much?)-$2-$3 -person who cuts your hair-20%
Pappadeaux actually has a carry-out desk. They are totally geared up for that. Me driving there differentiates it from delivery. If they deliver to my home, I'm tipping generously without hesitation.
But why? Why don't they just pay them a regular hourly/salary wage? Is the tip the incentive for quality customer service?
Ummm no. I mean tipping is an option but you'd have to be a total a**hole not to tip considering the fact that bartenders and waiters live off of tips. In Texas the average server get paid about $2 an hour, so they really need tips to be able to pay the bills. My best friend used to bartend and if she had 3 slow nights in a row it would seriously jeapordize whether or not she could make the bills.
Because its not as cost effective to pay a regular hourly wage. The tip is both an incentive but its also necessary. The general thought is that waiters expect to be tipped, but how good the service is depends on how big a tip they want or how friendly you are because if you're a total jerk customer then they don't really care about your tip; they just want you to leave so they can get better customers who are more inclined to leave better tips.
Here's a question I have. Is it kosher, when you're paying cash to a bartender, to tell them that you're going to leave the tip after your last drink? We're on a budget now where we only have a certain amount of cash every two weeks for spending and we're leaving our debit cards at home. If I tip a dollar every beer, I end up spending a lot more than I would had I opened a tab. Actually, the people I hate to tip the most are bartenders. I don't drink liquor that much and most of the time, they're simply grabbing a bottle or filling up a pint glass that takes them all of 10 seconds while I'm usually standing there for 10 minutes trying to get their attention. Why should I be expected to pay an extra dollar a beer for that? I do love Rachel at Triple Crown though.
Most restaurants/bars have extremely thin profit margins. One way to cut back on this is to pay employees low wages because of the money they make on tips (money frmo the customer, not the restaurant/bar) It also helps to assure that the customers will be treated well and will return. If you have not tipped in the past, please change your ways now that you know. Ask anyone that has waited tables/bussed/tended bar about tipping...
I would advise you to acquire a Check Card (I'm sure you know what that is...comes directly out of your checking account and is easy to track). Simply tip at the end of the evening Also, probably not a good idea to say you will tip at the end...that's a great way to always be the last person served in a crowded bar.
I must keep it simple. I calculate 15% and then round up or down, depending on their performance. It could be between 10-20%. 10% is service that includes neglecting the patron, so I neglect 5%. 20% is going above and beyond.
Nothing or $1 depending on my mood (although mabe a dollar or two for pizza delivery is regular). Nothing 20-30% usually (i tip a minimum of 3 dollars at a sit down restaraunt, unless the service is poor) I tip $1 for each drink, regardless of beer or mixed drink, unless the service is exceptional. Never done valet parking I don't normally tip at places like this -- my philosophy is these people have the ability to set their own prices in many instances -- just charge me what you want me to pay. Also, I always get a buzz cut, so it literally takes about 5 minutes to cut my hair.
