NW Austin fire is contained. A "person of interest" was detained by APD allegedly in connection with it.
Man, that Riata Trace fire is extremely close to my house. If this spark would have happened on Sunday with that strong wind from the north I think that things could have been very bad for my family. Our house is almost 1/2 mile due south of that fire in Milwood.
There is a potential tropical storm forming in the Gulf of Mexico. It's still early in the development. I am hoping it heads to Texas. We could use the rain to keep new fires from forming.
Amazing how quickly it spread with those winds. <object id="flashObj" width="624" height="400" classid="clsid27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,47,0"><param name="movie" value="http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9?isVid=1&isUI=1" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><param name="flashVars" value="videoId=1146364999001&linkBaseURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.weather.com%2Fweather%2Fvideos%2Fnews-41%2Ftop-stories-169%2Fwatch-how-fast-fire-can-move-21810&playerID=45063710001&playerKey=AQ~~,AAAAAAQxtuk~,N9g8AOtC12ecHIGDQkCKGosAvQO6x7hZ&domain=embed&dynamicStreaming=true" /><param name="base" value="http://admin.brightcove.com" /><param name="seamlesstabbing" value="false" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="swLiveConnect" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><embed src="http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9?isVid=1&isUI=1" bgcolor="#FFFFFF" flashVars="videoId=1146364999001&linkBaseURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.weather.com%2Fweather%2Fvideos%2Fnews-41%2Ftop-stories-169%2Fwatch-how-fast-fire-can-move-21810&playerID=45063710001&playerKey=AQ~~,AAAAAAQxtuk~,N9g8AOtC12ecHIGDQkCKGosAvQO6x7hZ&domain=embed&dynamicStreaming=true" base="http://admin.brightcove.com" name="flashObj" width="624" height="400" seamlesstabbing="false" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" swLiveConnect="true" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash"></embed></object>
Agreed he did the right thing. I think maybe he could have done it a bit sooner, but I can't fault him too much for wanting to see if it could be contained first. But I must admit, this quote from someone on Facebook cracked me up: Just trying to lighten the mood, folks.
Temps are SOOOO nice outside, and I want to open my windows. But the damn SMOKE! It's like fog outside.
BTW, saw this on FB. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Lost-and-Found-Pets-From-Texas-Wildfires/110680239037485 I truly hope that the pets are reunited with their owners. I hate to think that some of them didn't make it.
Man, I just got my oil changed and came out of the dealership and it smelled like a campfire. There is a big smoky haze here in north Austin and I thought that there was a new fire close by, but it just seems that there is a haze all over this part of town. I've never seen or even imagined anything like this.
this is one time i wont criticize perry - he isnt doing anything any other governor wouldnt be doing. the austin fire chief, however, deserves some grief for not returning from her colorado vacation over the weekend. i dont notice any reduction in air quality here in south austin - i can definitely see the smoke out in bastrop and to the west/n-w, but i guess the way the winds are blowing are keeping it from getting too bad here. EDIT: actually i just went and looked outside and its totally smokey out. it wasnt like this the last couple days. after all the wind i had a ton of leaves in my yard, which got me paranoid about a fire - i raked all that up yesterday and am continuing to water the perimiter of my house, as i have been doing all summer.
It's in N. Austin, too. Stepped outside my building a little while ago and could feel it instantly in my eyes.
Can't help but think "#)$&^#$, SMOKEY, just a little too late for your advice, man. " on the advertisements on this page.
As an aside, my wife's old license plate had the letters GRU and her new license plate has the letters GUX. GRUGUX - close, but not quite.
