I voted for Manziel, but i'm going to have to change my vote to Clowney -- he's the only true option this year to use a number one pick on IMHO.
Cowboys fan first and Texans observer second (I just recently moved away from Houston so I would always watch their games.... 1. You can't draft Clowney. Would love to be able to want to but I don't take a player @ #1 that has had that kind of motivation related issues (just personal opinion) 2. You need to take an impact player that improves and plays this year. I do believe that fans in Houston want to turn this thing around quickly. I do not believe in any QB in the draft to fit that description. 3. Houston will be starting the season with a stop gap QB not on their roster (likely Cassel) Has to be Watkins. I know that HOU has a clear #1 and #2 at this point but the Andre Johnson situation is sketchy at best. Watkins @ #1, Best DL on the board at Round 2 pick one, and then go for CB and Oline as available in rounds 3 and 4.
Okay....so you are saying that 1. They can't take the best player in the draft based on lazy analysis? 2. They need an impact player, even though you say they can't take the best player in the draft due to a reputation based on lazy analysis. 3. They are going to start the season with a QB that just signed with the Vikings. You then suggest that they pick a 3rd WR with the overall first pick in the draft......Jerry is that you?
Rick Smith should be fired on the spot for this move and BOB should be put on probationary notice that if draft a WR in a deep WR class #1 and don't go to the playoffs, your gone too
If Clowney is lucky he may can have the same productivity as Mario (if he's lucky). Watkins has the potential to be better than Dre. You're basically passing up on a super star wide receiver for Mario Williams (if lucky). Pass rushers and defensive players are easy to find. Seattle got their best pass rushers off the free agent market (Avril and Bennett _ two cheap guys). But yet they traded an arm and a leg to get Percy Harvin and paid him a boat load of money despite his injury history. People say follow Seattle's formula, but their not paying attention to Seattle's formula.
Not saying that it's impossible for Watkins to not be better than AJ, but some people forget how freakish AJ was coming out of college. He was bigger, faster, and stronger than Watkins. The only player more freakish than AJ would be Calvin Johnson. Sammy Watkins - 6'1 211 4.43 - 40 time Andre Johnson 6-2 230 4.40 - 40 time There is also a 0% chance they take a WR with the top pick given how heavily they've drafted at that position in the last few years.
Notice in the first part of your statement on how you talk about Dre in the past tense. Dre came out of college a lonnnng time ago. And I think Sammy is only 6 feet but he can still attack the ball in the air like bigger receivers. And there's a big difference between 40 time combine numbers and on field game speed. This tape shows the difference. Watch "Sammy Watkins Ultimate 2013-14 Highlights ᴴᴰ" on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Kjkh3yV8YA&feature=youtube_gdata_player Sammy is the best "player/prospect" in this draft at a valuable premier position. But like you said... The Texans invested a 1st round pick in Hopkins (which was a reach), a 3rd round pick on Posey, and a later round pick on Martin. And they're paying Dre a BOAT LOAD of money when they should be trying to trade him. But they spent a 1st round pick on Mercilus and a 2nd round pick on Reed and a #1 pick on Mario so the Texans will probably draft Clowney since drafting pass rushing DEs so high has been so successful.
I'd say there is just about a 0% chance that Sammy Watkins is even close to the WR that Andre Johnson is even if he reaches his full potential. Andre is easily a top 3 WR of all time.
You just won the internet... I'm a huge fan of Dre's (I believe most Texans fans are and many others), but that's ridiculous.

Mack is a better overall OLB prospect than Clowney, but he's nowhere near the same caliber when it comes to the pass rush and stopping the run.
the texans top 3 may be different than the media's top 3. People are seeing twitter reports and saying "yup thats a wrap" but we really dont know what the Texans are thinking.
Well let's hope not. If they think anyone other than Clowney or maybe Bridgewater or Bortles is worth their first pick then they are out of their minds and the Texans are in trouble.
