Again, who actually pays to get into SXSW shows? The wristband shows at night are for record execs...the "parties" are for fans. They're all free and typically have free beer, though some are invititation only. It's not difficult at all to get into those, though. Blind Boys of Alabama are playing a free show either Friday or Saturday afternoon, so there's no need to buy a wrist band. I can't decide if I'm driving out on Friday or Saturday morning. Highlights of the free shows this weekend: those peabodies gris gris big business the observers tyrades soundtrack of our lives blind boys of alabama the kills bloc party natural history mono calexico lou barlow modey lemon rex hobart & the misery boys nicolai dunger jennifer gentle dead meadow vic chesnutt queens of the stone age fatboy slim the wrens stars jason faulkner helmet rezillos graham coxon coachwhips the frames radio 4 camper van beethoven/cracker crooked fingers thunderbirds are now! turing machine futureheads ny dolls M.I.A. diplo doves jim and jennie & the pinetops headache city MOTO dalek isis bad wizard chris stamey oxes wives ROKY ERICKSON all FREE FREE FREE. yeah. my friends at Vice Magazine are co-hosting the day-party on friday with [adult swim.] that should be one helluva show, boyz! i've been working for Vice all week distributing the magazine and a special sxsw "mini-mag." the day parties and "after-parties" are what sxsw is really all about... here's the Vice party list for all who dare: www.viceland.com/sxsw (i'll be working at all of them--i'll wear a rockets shirt so i'll stand out from all the scenesters--let's party!) btw, The Dicks show last saturday at room 710 was amazing! gary floyd hasn't lost anything (except quite a bit of weight and the pigment in his hair.) he brought Biscuit and Dottie up on stage to help with the classic, "Young Boys Feet." i'm still coming down...
If anyone catches the Kills show, please let me know how it went. I wish I was in Texas to make some of these things. Thanks
OK, I know those who are attending are too busy (or, at least should be) to check in, but I really would like to hear some reviews, or at least some updates
crowds, crowds, crowds, lines, bands, parties, chemicals, insanity, crowds... last night's Vice Records showcase was great. Bloc Party was much cooler than i thought they were going to be. also, Panthers and Death From Above 1979 rocked. Wednesday, the set i saw was at the Red Eyed Fly. Scott H. Biram, Tia Carrera, and Aereola 51 (Pinkus of the Butthole Surfers, Brett Bradford of Scratch Acid, and Max Brody of Ministry.) Aereola 51 killed ALL! more later. my head feels funny. i've got to help set up the Vice/[adult swim] party at 11am. i'm at work and things aren't going so well...
the ny dolls rocked. I saw the dolls twice in one weekend. Johanson looks like a skinny crack head, but he still has it...sly was badass...and sam yaffa from the hanoi rocks was on bass... *ucken rocked... me and the boys johanson still got it syl! communication breakdownnnnnnnnnn robert plant leaving the hilton giving me a thumbs up amazing times...
