I am merely answering your question. Not try to quantify anything else.

The Hangout can impact the performance of the GARM independent of what was posted. The vast majority of server resources are tied up in serving connection to users--both http connections and database connections. What the content is is largely irrelevant to server resources.

This is why server performance is directly tied to the amount of users logged in.

So yes, if the Hangout is causing the most connections, it can hurt the speed of the GARM...and the combination of the two can cross the threshhold of the server's ability to serve either forum.

So, if the keeley and BrianKagy say cool it on using the Hangout as a whoring playground, they are perfectly correct in giving server performance as a reason for frowning on it. Anyone who says "the server load is minimal, because it is just text" are just naive to what impacts server performance.

Oops, I just realized that YoYao posted a link to a brothel in ZRB's "Going to Sydney" thread...I guess that was improper...

i'm not sure, but i'm sure that ONE thread with 60 posts does much less harm than the 13,625,371 realgm threads or the "Yao is injured, destory China" threads or the "Hoopsworld: Rockets looking to trade Yao for Pervis Ellison" threads that infect GARM on a daily basis. OR that hateful d&d forum where arguments leak out into the rest of the forums like it did that one time in feedback forum.

you guys do a f'ing hell of a job keeping up with the place, but seems like the wrong guy got the axe this time.

don't worry, i still love you, admins. ;)

keely, do you have something against me being a w****?!? huh? oh... nevermind. you meant a bbs whoring. sorry.

and since everybody is doing tributes, i guess i'll do the same and bring back some of the oldies...

Yeah, I caught that too. It scared me until I saw the post date.

Maybe the mods have a point after all. :D

EDIT: Holy crap, OS!!! Once again, my cube-mates are wondering why I am laughing so hard. I just have to shake my head and say "oh, nothing".

BTW, nice shirt. ;)

Nice one Omega!

I guess the reason why YoYao issue has caused some controversy is because a number of us have bonded with YoYao during the past few months. The BBS somehow is like a big family.

We have YoYao this horny little kid in the family who's butt needs to be constantly whipped... we still love him because he's part of the family & therefore hate to see him go...

Anyway I have nothing against the admins, you all doing a great job for us to enjoy this wonderful place & I really appreciate it.

So cheers!

This is not necessary true. Server load is largely a measure of user traffic to any particular content. What do you think will bring down the server...20 realgm threads hitting the board in 5 minutes, or oeilpere, Clutch, Doc Rocket posting a trade rumor in a single thread.

The #1 viewed threads suck the most server resources. When the #1 viewed threads turn out to be "attention whoring" threads that have zip to do with basketball, I completely agree that that is the epitome of a complete waste of server resources on the best basketball bbs in the world...no matter how much entertainment value it has.

Serious Offer

hey, if you guys want to photoshop each other with no impact on server resources, I'll start you a BBS on another server, and you can link to that from here if you want....and I'll even allow uploading the actual pictures to the server as an added benefit.

I'd do anything to prevent the Hangout from impacting the GARM's ability to operate at maximum server potential.

Just ask, and a satellite hangout server with complete playground privileges (short of p*rn) will be up within a week. But I suspect that is not what most attention whoring posts want...it seems the whole purpose is to start the thread on this high traffic *basketball* BBS. And the entertainment value is lost if you lose maximum exposure....sort of like how people complained about the division of the hangout from D&D.

The most viewed thread in the hangout right now (Summer of YoYao) would be No. 11 in the GARM - there are 10 threads there which have far more views than the Summer of YoYao thread.

Hardly enough to justify a new server just for that, I'd think.

With your "serious offer", you are just being an attention w**** :p.

Just bring YoYao back. I think we would have contained him better if we knew you were going to give him the death penalty. A photoshop server/forum would be awesome. I am going yank a copy of photoshop from work so I can get in on the action.

YoYao should not have been banned, simple as that. There are tons of attention whores on this board, yet he got the axe real quick for some reason. He got popular, and certain people just wanted him off of here as fast as possible for some reason. What difference does it make really if a topic in the Hangout is getting alot of hits? If you don't want non-basketball related posts getting all the attention, then don't have an off-topic section at all. I will end this post now. Don't want to w**** anymore attention and get myself banned.

Damn the man.

Hey, I am sure that I am out of line criticizing the Hangout's contribution to server loads. But equally, I have always thought it out of line for people to think that the hangout is harmless to server loads, like posters continue to try to illustrate while clinging to some notion that there is a valid counterpoint to make with keeley and BrianKagy concerning the lack of harm in whoring threads, wrt server loads.

If the server was nowhere near maximum capacity, surely the admins would have just said they don't like whoring, period. It's not like keeley or BrianKagy are defensive enough to come up with lame excuses. The fact they added a point about server load should be enough to know server load is a legitimate concern.

I like the hangout as much as the next guy. But I can do without it if the admins say it is a problem. Hence, my offer is just putting my money where my mouth is and giving fellow cc.net addicts a place to freely post material to offload it from impacting this much more important bbs.

As much as I hate to do it I have to agree with Harrisment. Not because I dislike Harrisment but because I hate to take issue with anyone directly related with this site. YoYao should not have been banned. Was he a attention w****....maybe. Did he take things a little too far.......probably. Did he get out of line......OK, maybe. Was he doing anything he had not done before.......NO!!!!!!!! It's wrong to let all this stuff go on and then all of a sudden with no warning ban the guy for doing what he had been doing all along. And this coming from a guy who never replied to any of his threads.

I don't know what exactly happened here but unless YoYao was given a fair warning, like so many people get around here, it was not done properly! He seemed like a nice enough guy. One that had developed quite a repore with some of the regular members here. And with all the self-policeing that goes on around here, had he been doing anything deemed inapproperate he would have been told so real quick!!! Yet no one (up untill now) had said or done anything about it!!

I think had he been given a warning he would have got his act together. And if he was doing something or turning this site into something that the creators do not wish the site to become, then make the rules known before hand and don't spring them on someone unknowningly as done in this case. Nobody wants this site to turn into a ESPN-type message board but I don't think he was doing anything that warrented a ban from Clutchcity.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong!!! (Please don't ban me!!!!)

YoYao
YoYao
The poor boy posts
And we all say "ow"
Boy is so horny
He would hump a cow
Poor Poor
YoYao

Not to worry...I predict that within 5 years, YoYao will move to Houston, get a job as a bartender at Treasures, and get fired within two weeks after he is caught behind the bar imitating the "apple pie" scene from the movie American Pie with a champagne bottle.
