Both (I hope), of course I want my posts to get attention, otherwise I'd be talking to myself... I understand that he might have ended up enjoying the attention he got a bit too much and it wasn't just as funny anymore when it was clear that not only he enjoyed it, he even ASKED for more attention. I just thought it was all in good fun - there were a lot of people who really got good laughs and entertainment out of the whole thing every day. And I have to say, he was always a good sport about it...other people might have gotten upset or might have "reported posts to the moderator" when people would have started to make fun of them. Anyway, I guess it's clear that I liked the guy, so I'll just shut up about it now, I certainly don't have any right to ask for reinstatement for him, it's done now .
Personally I think if the admins give YoYao some kinds of indication not to start these threads... I believe he'll listen. What I'm not so comfortable with the decision is that he don't even get a chance to redeem himself & I feel he is good nature at heart (i.e. If he has been told not to start these threads by admins, I'm sure he won't). Just my 2 cents.
Here's the thing: the BBS Hangout is the neon ground effects and pink fuzzy dice on the Mercedes that is clutchcity.net. It's completely irrelevant to the actual operation of the site. If adding a pair of pink fuzzy dice to your Mercedes decreased its performance markedly, you'd come to resent the pink fuzzy dice pretty quickly, wouldn't you? What do you think a 60-post thread full of crappy PhotoShopped images of some 17-yr old twink does to the overall performance BBS? Are you kidding? We've already got people arguing as though it were debatable. Redeem what? This is a Rockets-oriented basketball site with a side forum for inane off-topic posts. If all a poster does is flood the side forum with inane off-topic posts, why should clutchcity.net be the site that provides him his outlet? What's the benefit to the site of allowing that kind of idiocy?
Just an honest "technical" question - aren't all the photos hosted at other sites? So am I correct in my belief that if anything reduces the performance, it is only the text in the thread itself, but not the pictures? Doesn't the BBS server only "process" (sorry for the layman's term) the links, but not the pictures?
BEST. POST. EVER!!!!!!!!! freaking hilarious!! you can't rob this board of the spirit of YoYao you big meanies!!!
Is it correct to believe then that a 60-post Photoshop thread does not strain the performance of the BBS server more than a 60-post text only thread?
ima and Rockets2K: I understand what you are saying about how he never posts in the GARM. Hell, I hardly post in that forum anymore even though I will still read it. My point is that even though the Hangout is the place to talk about off-topic stuff compared to the Rockets, people still come to this site because they have an interest in the Rockets. To me (which I may be off-base here) it seemed like there was a perception that one poster, whether it was just an act or he really was like that, had taken over. People were coming here to see what that crazy YoYao would say next or do next instead of coming here to see what was going on with the Rockets. In other words, his antics had not only gotten out of control but it was like he wanted to be bigger than the BBS. So, it gets back to what keeley said about being an attention w****. Add what BK said and it makes perfect sense to me. Also, I think having your title changed from "Senior Member" to "On Probation" is a cue to shape up and tone it down, but instead YoYao kept on keeping on sorta like poking a sleeping dog with a stick. Well, guess what happened? That dog woke up and bit him. I mean the guy was funny at first, but I just don't see why it continued to stay funny. Maybe my sense of humor needs an upgrade, but I have never been a big fan of shtick posters.
Am I correct in saying then that it doesn't matter exactly what is in the stupid thread that makes the stupid thread objectionable if it impacts performance, but that because in this case we're talking about YoYao, it made sense for me to specifically use those type of threads as the example? Why, I think I am.
He was warned. And he continued. It was like gettingbranded's daring Clutch to ban him. And what's so wrong with fuzzy dice and neon ground effects on a Mercedes?? [as long as you've got the low profile tires and alloy rims to match]
Great article moe... We've all been banned around here...at least once...er...I think...or was it just me... Once he apologizes and uses some restraint, he'll be back..
this is irrelevent, imo. The biggest strain on a web server has little to do with content. It is the number of users requesting connections to that content. The number of people hitting the server is what brings it down--not the size of content it is delivering--relatively speaking. If the Hangout is causing the most traffic, it most certainly effects the response times users get from the GARM. Look at it this way, that "cough, cough" oeilpere thread from the hospital seems to have brought the server down, right? Not to say a Hangout thread could do that, but keeley and BrianKagy make a perfectly valid technical explanation of why Hangout threads can adversely effect the performance of the GARM. this is also one of the reasons why Clutch banned the guy who scrapped the data of when people appeared in the "Members Logged In" list and posted stats about it. The automated script it takes to build those stats is unnecessary load on the server in the form of increasing the server connection pool. not sure if connection pooling is their only point, but it is a valid point.
