My eldest cat (17 human years) Blackie (black cat, named by my sister when she was 10) is the end of a long line of cats. Her great grandmother was given to me for Christmas a long time ago, and she had a litter. We gave some of that litter to some friends, and her daughter had a litter. We took one of those kittens (meaning Blackie's great grandmother was now living with a granddaughter), and that cat had a litter that yielded Blackie. Blackie's sister died a year ago, but the diabetic Blackie continues to truck along as our longest-living cat we've had.

My other two cats, Amy and Bessy, were SPCA adoptions once Blackie's great grandmother passed away about 10 years ago.

Sorry for your loss. I agree it will be tough to come home expecting your dog with the wagging tail and the dog is not there. I'm going to hate that moment when it comes for me.

My dogs are Chloe and Zoe. They are female sister Rhodesian Ridgebacks and are 11 years / 4 months old. They are indoor dogs and relatively easy to care for over their lifespan. They used to be so hyper and run forever and hunt squirrels but now they mostly take it easy with a couple of walks a week. They have arthritis and trouble getting around these days but I feed them great food (Blue) and they are on Chondroitin/Glucosamine/Rimadyl so they do okay for their age. I bought them from a breeder and walked into a big area with puppies galore running around. These were basically the first two I could grab. They are pretty different from each other but get along fine. I got two so one wouldn't be lonely. Glad I did.

On the other side, I'm especially interested when people adopt dogs they find out in the world. I've seen those dogs...but they always seem to be going somewhere and are never just sitting there waiting to be picked up. In fact, I saw a dog with a collar just last week running through traffic and in parking lots but never stopped. A cop tried to catch up with it and I think he got outsmarted. That dog may be in China by now.

My cat is a 11 years old. I got him my senior year in college and someone in one of my acting classes had a bunch of kittens she was trying to find homes for.

She had named him Jordan, because he could jump like five feet in the air from just standing... I changed his name to Zane, because I was never a Jordan fan (left over UNC resentment maybe?) and at the time I was obsessed with Billy Zane... plus he was such a "zany" cat I thought the name fit.

I have been thinking about getting a puppy, but I am gone so much I hate the idea of one being locked up in a cage all day and half the night.

His name is anakin. On the weekend following thanksgiving day, my sister and I went to visit some of her friends in San Marcos. As it turns out, one of them was having problems keeping two dogs and a cat in her apartment complex.
She was going to give up the boy german shepherd to a shelter. I asked her to give him to me instead and the rest is history.

But right now I'm really worried. He has gotten diarrhea. It began yesteday evening and continued all through the night. I called in sick just to stay with him. Anyone ever dealt with this? It's the first time for me.

Got my dog, Petey, at the Humane Society. Not exactly the most loving dog in the world, but he has his moments. I think he spent alot of time with cats at one-time because he acts like one much of the time.

We have a pot-bellied pig named Geddy. We've had him since he was 6 weeks old, and he's turning 13 this year in June. My brother's a bass junkie, and Geddy Lee (Rush) is his favorite bassist, so that's how we got the name. My brother used to do some free-lance IT work (setting up home and work networks), and he drove out to the boondocks near Magnolia once way back in 1997 to set up a home network for this guy on his farm. Well, this guy had a pot-bellied pig who had just had babies, and he was looking to sell some of them. My brother said he was walking around the entire farm laying cables and stuff, and this one baby pig kept following him around trying to nip at his shoes. He said it was the cutest thing he had ever seen.....so when the time came for the guy to pay, my brother was like "I tell you what.....you let me take the little guy home, and we'll call it even." I remember coming home from school (I was in 9th grade at the time), and seeing this weird animal staring at me when I walked into the house. I even remember saying "Mom, what the HECK is wrong with that dog???"

He's probably the smartest animal I've ever been around, and we never had to train him for anything. He figured out good and bad really quick, and he's got a great personality. He can even tell which one of us is home by the sound of the car that pulls into the driveway. He's just about the nicest animal in the world, and he loves people. Also, his belly is great for taking naps on. I know, cool story yadayadayada.

Found a Pomeranian last October during a rainstorm in Austin. Put out fliers and he didn't have a chip, so 2 weeks later after no word I decided to keep him. He was trained and he took a liking to me quickly (probably because I pulled him out of the rain) so it wasn't a hard choice. He's in Houston with my parents who adore and spoil him, something I don't have the time to do as a student. Great dog.

How big did he get? I have thought about getting a pot belly for years but I know absolutely nothing about taking care of one.

We bought Rocket from a breeder when he was about 3 months old.
He is 13 months now and 120 lbs. I guess I named him Rocket because I like the Rockets :)

Got another dog from SPCA about 7 yrs ago.
His name is Comet...and no he was not named after the WNBA team.
He is black with some white spots and I remember right before we got him I was in physics class listening to some boring lecture about comets and the professor was saying that a comet is a dirty snowball - that's kind of like what the dog looked like when we first saw him.

Well, that's the thing. When we first got him, I could carry him in one arm, and he weighed no more than 25-30 lbs. The vet told us that he would probably get to about 125 or so, and about 4 ft long. Well, today, I'm guessing he's closer to 200 lbs, and completely stretched out, I would guess he's about 5' if not longer. I have no idea how he got so big, but we've been approached by a few different people asking if we wanted to breed him. I guess he's just got really good genes.

Oh, and sorry for the double post, but feel free to email me through the board if you've got any other questions. It's definitely a learning process to own one, but if you do go through with it, they're some of the most loving, caring animals you'll ever meet.

My then girlfriend and I had been talking about getting a dog for a while. I lived in the Braeswood Heights area, but was helping my dad's company back up their office for the impending doom known as Y2K. As I was driving by the corner of 1960 and Kuykendahl, I saw this beautiful Chow mix. I smiled and thought I definitely needed to get a dog soon.

The next day I went up to the office to make sure the new millenium hadn't fried anything (Y2K is the biggest anti-climax ever by the way). This time I brought my girlfriend with me, and lo and behold the same Chow was still there. We admired the dog from the car but didn't get out to look at her.

It was then that I decided I wanted that damn dog. I worked on my girlfriend that night and then took her to brunch at the Cheesecake Factory and made a persuasive case that we needed to buy the dog that very day. What can I say? I can be very persuasive when motivated. When we got to the corner of 1960, a young boy had the Chow and my heart dropped a bit. I looked at the other dozen dogs for sale and none of them appealed to me the way the Chow had. When the boy put the dog down, we immediately snatched her up. We wound up naming her Karma (inspired by the former Instant Karma on Richmond), and she's now 10 years old. She is an incredibly smart dog (smartest I've had) and pretty mellow.

We hated leaving Karma alone during the day. We had heard from neighbors that she cried for a while each day. With our low-key Chow mix, we figured we can deal with 2 dogs without many problems. So we opted for a more personable dog and wound up with a Chocolate Lab puppy the following Christmas. I named Dexter after the main character from Dexter's Laboratory. In the show, Dex is a super genius, and his sister DeeDee is intellectually challenged. We had the exact opposite. Karma is super smart, but Dexter is all heart and no brain. He truly is the dumbest dog I've had, but he is super sweet and affectionate. He's now a 9 year old puppy and hasn't slowed a beat even though he's got a lot of grey in his beard.

We got married a few years later and in the past few years have had a son and daughter. I hate that we don't have as much time to walk them, take them to the park or let them swim in the lake. Having 2 kids will devour almost all of your free time. They have, however, adapted really well to having the kids in the house and truly love our son and daughter. Karma lays protectively at the foot of our son's crib, just like she did for our daughter when she was a baby. Dexter just hugs on everyone, including the kids. Sometimes his tail or overexuberance can knock our toddler daughter over, but the kids both love the hell out of those dogs. And so do I and my wife.

got my kitten at CAP a little lest than a year ago i think. I picked her and she happened to be the last one out her litte,r by herself, with her little brother that was already taken. Don't know how she happened to be the last one picked cause she's very nice and very very tolerant but happy I got her. she's about one year old and is a little dilute tabby. she looks JUST like this cat here, and I'm not kiding.

I adopted my beagle Beatrice from the Houston Humane Society 4 years ago. She was found wandering the streets of Pasadena after everyone evacuated for Rita.

Fritz, my long haired miniature dachshund. A woman my aunt worked with was going through a divorce and couldn't keep him anymore so I decided to take him on. Been with us for 5 years.
