Mulligan http://theglitteringeye.com/mulligan/ excerpt: . . . It’s looking increasingly as though the internal conflicts in the Democratic Party, which have always been quite apparent, will torpedo any agenda that President Biden may have had. The Congressional progressives won’t settle for anything less than their ambitious and extravagant spending plans while the more centrist members of the caucus are balking at the price tag. That is not a surprise. It has always been apparent. And there are no mulligans in politics. Can President Biden make better decisions going forward than he has made since January? Or is he caught between the Scylla and Charybdis of the wings of his own party? more at the link
‘There’s no good news’: Biden’s rough summer puts Dems on high alert https://www.politico.com/news/2021/09/08/democrats-bet-biden-bounce-back-510366 excerpt If Biden doesn’t regain his footing within the next few months, many party veterans fear, his party’s chances of holding on to its narrow majorities in Congress are almost non-existent. “There’s no good news here. This is all on his watch,” said Paul Maslin, a top Democratic pollster who worked on the presidential campaigns of Jimmy Carter and Howard Dean. “You can argue what he’s doing or not doing, but it’s almost irrelevant. If things are chaotic and wrong, it ain’t going to help him.” Democrats are already beginning to calculate the potential cost to the party in 2022. Over drinks on the sidelines of a recent meeting of the Democratic Governors Association in Aspen, Colo., party donors and operatives privately took stock of the damage that Afghanistan and the resurging coronavirus pandemic might hold for the party’s prospects in the midterm elections next year. The assessment was bleak. “When Biden was elected, it was supposed to be, ‘Oh, the adults are back in the room to take charge,’” one strategist who was in Aspen said. “It turns out, we can’t do anything. Any Democratic strategist who thinks this is not going to impact the midterms or impact Biden being reelected, clearly they don’t know what the f--- they’re talking about.” Biden’s sagging approval rating is especially alarming to Democrats because a president’s approval rating is closely correlated with a party’s performance in the midterms. more
I am not a news hound so I maybe misinformed or uninformed but . What *exactly* is Kamala doing these days? She is the presumptive nominee in 2024 and she is not doing anything to make an independent name for herself Rocket River
Progressivism as secular religion https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2021/09/10/the_progressive_freakout_146377.html The Progressive Freakout By Erick Erickson September 10, 2021 Recent data from the Cooperative Election Study shows 20% of atheists have participated in a march or protest, compared with 6% of white evangelicals. Forty percent of atheists have contacted a public official, compared with 24% of white evangelicals. Fifty-two percent of atheists have donated to political candidates, compared with just 26% of white evangelicals. Pull back further, and the divide between progressives and conservative evangelicals shows the former, not the latter, more actively involved in protest and politics. As progressivism secularizes, politics becomes religion. Virtue signaling replaces a Christian ichthus fish on the back of a car. Outrage becomes a signal for identifying heretics. If one is not outraged, one just might be a heretic to secular, progressive zealots. This past weekend, college students took to stadiums across America to experience the joy of fellowship and football. Across television networks and social media, progressives decried the activity as unsafe. Outdoor festivities again became superspreader events in ways mass protests and ransacking small businesses did not during the riots and protests surrounding George Floyd's death in summer 2020. The Supreme Court let a Texas law stay in place because the plaintiffs in the case sued the wrong people. The Supreme Court refused to halt the law because the Court does not stop laws. The Court only stops people from enforcing the laws. When the wrong people are sued, the Court has no power to stop them. Progressives insisted, despite the dereliction of duty by the plaintiffs, that the Court should stop the law anyway. While four justices would have done so, they would have deviated from legal precedent. Undeterred, instead of blaming the plaintiffs for their collective screw-up, progressives assailed the Supreme Court, Texas, former President Donald Trump, conservatives and babies. They fixated on the worst-case scenario -- rape. According to progressives, women who are victims of rape will have to carry their babies to term and face untold psychological trauma. They patently ignored that Texas cannot stop a woman from traveling to another state to terminate her child. Nor did they care to point out that rape accounts for, at most, 1% of abortions. To listen to the commentary on television, one would think rape and pregnancies therefrom happen constantly. Meanwhile, one doctor admitted to killing dozens of children in the run-up to the law taking effect, none because of rape, but rather because of the mothers' convenience. As the remains of a hurricane went up the East Coast, sending flooding with it, progressives freaked out about climate change. Never letting a crisis go to waste, politicians and supposed experts paraded onto television screens across America demanding Americans give up their way of life to stop storms. Storms will not be stopped by a battery-powered car. One would be hard-pressed to realize that from the media coverage. Podcaster Joe Rogan received ivermectin from his doctor. The inventors of the drug received a Nobel Prize for ivermectin's contribution to human progress. The drug has saved billions of people from blindness and parasitic infestation. It is also used in livestock, and a few people have tried to ingest dosages meant for horses. Rogan, however, got it from his doctor. Some doctors believe the well-documented anti-inflammatory properties of ivermectin can help prevent or combat the so-called cytokine storm whereby COVID-19 triggers a release of inflammatory proteins called cytokines into the bloodstream. The Food and Drug Administration has discouraged ivermectin prescriptions pending further study. Progressives freaked out about Rogan and his doctor while assailing Texas for getting between a woman and her doctor. All of the freaking out is theater. In the postmodern age, one demonstrates one's commitment to a particular truth or cause through performance. The screaming and wailing on social media and television is performance designed to both signal one's commitment to a supposed truth and identify the heretics who choose not to perform. As progressives continue making secularism a religion, the ritualistic outrage will get more intense, but this will also help discredit the progressive cause. Most people don't have time for outrage these days as they struggle to get by thanks to progressives closing schools and causing inflation with massive spending binges. What are your thoughts on this? Do you believe caring about a cause like wealth inequality or criminal justice reform means it's religous by nature? What makes something religous? The article doesn't define that? It seems like it's implying "religious" = caring about something.
and the follow up.. “While the report does not draw any direct links between hijackers and the Saudi Arabian government as a whole, Jim Kreindler, who represents many of the families suing Saudi Arabia, said the report validates the arguments they have made in the case. "This document, together with the public evidence gathered to date, provides a blueprint for how al-Qaida operated inside the U.S.," he said, "with the active, knowing support of the Saudi government."
It's understandable why some people might be freaking out over Democratic prospects in upcoming elections but it's a matter of very short attention spans to be thinking that Biden hasn't done anything or everything has gone wrong. In just about 9 months he's already gotten a major legislation passed in the form of the massive COVID-19 bill. He got Republican support on three important pieces of legislation and still is most likely to get at least the bipartisan Infrastructure bill passed. Even if the 3.5 Trillion bill doesn't pass I'm guessing Pelosi and the House Progressives will realize that going into the Midterms with no Infrastructure bill passed will be more damaging than that they held out for the $3.5 trillion bill. He's made EO's that are very sweeping in scope. While there is a lot to criticize on how the withdrawal from Afghanistan was handled most Americans support it and it's questionable how much of an issue it will be a coupe of months from now. Finally a majority of Americans support his moves on COVID. Conventional wisdom and history says that the Democrats will be in trouble in 2022 and possibly 2024 but a lot can change in one year and especially in three years. Also while the electorate might be critical of Biden and the Democrats at the moment the GOP aren't offering anything that expands their base. If they run on the 2020 election was stolen, abortion needs to be stopped by any means, government shouldn't be fighting COVID but also stopping local government and businesses from doing so those aren't going to be winning issues. It will come down to again whether they can energize enough of their base to come out but issues like that and especially what Republican states have done also energize their opponents.
DEMOCRATS SEE TRUMP SUPPORTERS AND THE UNVACCINATED AS BIGGEST THREAT TO NATION https://scottrasmussen.com/democrat...the-unvaccinated-as-biggest-threat-to-nation/ excerpt Fifty-seven percent (57%) of Democratic voters believe supporters of Donald Trump are a serious threat to the nation. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that 56% of those in President Biden’s party also consider the unvaccinated a serious threat. That’s a higher level of concern than Democrats express about the Taliban (44% see it as a serious threat); China (44%), or Russia (37%). These results help explain the tone and actions taken recently by President Biden. Republicans and Independents have a much different view of the threats facing the nation. For Republicans, the top concerns are the Taliban (66%), Defund the Police Activists (62%), and China (58%). The top three concerns for Independents are the same as the GOP (though in a different order). The Taliban is the biggest concern for independent voters (46%) followed by China (45%) and Defund the Police Activists (36%). Among all voters, 52% see the Taliban as a serious threat and 49% say the same about China. Next on the list, 40% see Defund the Police Activists as a serious threat and 39% see the unvaccinated that way. While Democrats see Trump supporters as the biggest threat facing the nation, 42% of all voters see them as no threat. That’s not terribly surprising given that the former president received nearly as many votes as President Biden. This is the only group asked about in the survey where the number saying No Threat tops the Serious Threat. more at the link
The fact that Republican voters see the Taliban as the largest threat to America shows how out of touch they are with reality. Donald Trump supporters make sense. They are bought into the idea that there is an illegal usurper in the White House and believe democracy has ended. That **** damages the country a lot more than whatever the hell the Taliban can do.
I can agree with that. The unvaccinated are a threat not only to people's lives but to the economy as well. Trump supporters tried to stop Democracy from happening with violence already. They may well be soured on Democracy in the United States and no longer beleive in its validity. That's dangerous as well.
