Nice job CaseyH, you were getting toasted, so you reverted to Doug from Ghost World. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NP9dIwJIjKA&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NP9dIwJIjKA&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I like america fine. That does not preclude some aspects being "shameful". This ain't an on/off switch.
It doesn't bother you that most people are so completely against helping others less fortunate than themselves? It doesn't bother you that so many feel that they are better than people from other countries, cultures, and backgrounds? Why do so many in America think that it has to be our way or the high way? Where does this superiority complex come from? Do we really want to be known as the bully? It seems like so many people are willing to help other countries (Iraq?) but they don't want to help the people in their own neighborhoods. I'm sorry but that makes zero sense to me. I guess I'm a bleeding heart liberal that cares for others and is willing to sacrifice a little in my life to help someone else a lot. I know I do well. Better than most and I'm grateful for it. I also don't have a problem giving another couple of % so that others can get by a little better. I'll wait an extra day or two to go to the doctor so everyone can be seen. Man, how horrible is that. I can see how that kind of philosophy can be the beginning of Armageddon. I do think that people should be ashamed if they are so wrapped up in themselves that they would have abundant excess at the expense of others. This is the American culture and it is wrong. Casey, I have nothing against you personally. I'm sure if you and I met up IRL I'd buy you a beer and we'd be friends. I think we both want what is best for the US, we just disagree on how to accomplish that.
Actually, I'd argue it very subjective. Certainly not worthy of "take it or leave it". Heck, if I wanted that, America is the last place I'd look to.
I disagree that people do not want to help other people. Millions in charity donations seem to agree but who knows peoples real intent. I also disagree the american culture is wrong. I like american culture.
If everyone in the United States had better medical care and as a whole, we would spend half as much as we do now, would you not want to do it?
No they don't. If you have a good job in the UK you have worse health care than if you have a good job in the USA.
By what standard - oh that's right, the all important "my UK friend had to wait five weeks for a doctor's appointment" anectdotal standard.
The statistics are not in your favor. We get beat in every category, AS A WHOLE, plus we pay twice as much.
