Funny, you and Joe Biden both could have the same user name. http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message592584/pg1
"This is the source of our confidence — the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny." Matthew 9:13 I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Mark 2:17 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Luke 5:32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
I think it’s important for all of us Obama supporters to understand that there will be people who won’t understand, or who won’t understand right away, and that it is important for us to be patient with them. And I say this as someone who is himself not patient enough at times. There will also be people whose minds are truly close and who do not want to understand, and we shouldn't let ourselves, or the greater project, be derailed by that. Don’t let them suck the energy out of you and bring you down. In the interest of trying to explain, however: There are probably some ways Americans haven’t done this, but in general, and in this context, the statement is probably true, and without any further explanation of your concerns there isn’t much to respond to. In some cases the poor condition of those roads and bridges inhibits trade and the economy in general, but even more fundamentally it is in an economic downturn like this that it makes the most sense for governments do this kind of infrastructure work. This is when this work can be done the cheapest, and it also stimulates the economy. This sounds like some kind of conspiracy thinking, but please do explain. I think that there are other uses for technology in the field of health care than this. Some form of carbon tax would represent a user pay system. I trust you’re not saying that you want future generations to pay for something people today are doing. Don’t you mean especially Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan? I trust he will, and the clean water can be part of the infrastructure work that he’s been talking about. Fear not. I think with a little explanation we can get you up to speed, provided that you want to understand, that is.
I liked the speech a lot. No epic line that will be engraved in stone (i.e. "The only thing we have to fear is" or "Ask not what your country can do for you"), but I dont think that took away from the speech. Hope he can live up to his words. I am hopeful.
PRC censors parts of Obama speech. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28768271 Chinese translation cuts parts of Obama speech Live broadcast on state TV cut away when sensitive topics mentioned BEIJING - The official Chinese translation of President Barack Obama's inauguration speech omitted his references to communism and dissent, and a live broadcast on state television Wednesday quickly cut away to the anchor when sensitive topics were mentioned. The comments by the newly installed U.S. president veered into politically sensitive territory for China's ruling Communist Party, which maintains a tight grip over the Internet and the entirely state-run media. Beijing tolerates little dissent and frequently decries foreign interference in its internal affairs. At one point, Obama said earlier generations "faced down communism and fascism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions." He later addressed "those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent — know that you are on the wrong side of history." Missing word 'communism' The Chinese translation of the speech, credited to the Web site of the official China Daily newspaper, was missing the word "communism" in the first sentence. The paragraph with the sentence on dissent had been removed entirely. The censored version was carried by the state-run Xinhua News Agency and posted on popular online portals Sina and Sohu. Another portal, Netease, used a version without the paragraph mentioning communism, but retaining the part about dissent. The news channel of state broadcaster China Central Television broadcast the speech live early Wednesday local time, but appeared caught off-guard by the statement about facing down communism. The translator had no sooner said "fascism and communism" when the audio faded out from Obama's speech and cameras cut back to the studio anchor, who seemed flustered for a second before turning to ask an expert what challenges the president faces in turning around the U.S. economy. Wang Jianhong, deputy director of the CCTV general editing department, said he did not stay up to watch the inauguration broadcast but suggested the transition was a normal part of the program. "There are breakaways even when broadcasting China's own meetings," he said. "Americans might care a lot about the presidential inauguration, but Chinese may not be very interested." No one in the editing department of the China Daily Web site was immediately available to answer questions. The full translation of Obama's speech could be viewed on the Web site of Hong Kong-based broadcaster Phoenix Satellite Television, which has a reputation as a more independent news source. The China Daily Web site posted Obama's full remarks in English only. China has previously altered the words of U.S. officials. A 2004 speech in Shanghai by former Vice President Dick Cheney was broadcast live on state-run television at the insistence of U.S. officials, but the Chinese transcript of the remarks deleted references to political freedom. In 2003, the memoirs of Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama's nominee for secretary of state, were pulled from publication in China after the government-backed publisher removed references to the 1989 Tiananmen Square democracy protests and altered Clinton's comments about human rights activist Harry Wu.
Its interesting to note Obama's appeal that somebody who couldn't vote for him or even contribute to his campaign considers himself a supporter. Maybe for Canadians and other non US citizens "fan" might be a better term.
Looks like a new axis of evils is declared in Obama's inauguration speech. Is Obama is trying out-do Bush? LOL. Not sure that's a change Americans are looking for. On another note, the speech is written by a punk ass drunken misogynist, and Obama is not known to have great editing skills, so I cut him some slack.
wait so you're justifying china censoring "those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent — know that you are on the wrong side of history."? does china cling to power via corruption and deceit and silencing of dissent? if not what's the problem?
China has its share of problems, no doubt about that. But why is it Obama's business to fix them, particularly amid greater self-made mess here in America?
By supporting him I don’t mean that I gave him money. I mean that I support what he stands for, and what he stands for extends far beyond the borders of the US. I think the racial part of his presidency is largely an American thing, although I think the rest of us are happy for you and it does have some symbolic meaning elsewhere as well, but I think what is most important to the rest of us is the shift in worldview, which to a certain extent stems from a generational shift. I heard someone yesterday suggest that Obama was between the boomers and generation X. I see him as a gen Xer who also understands the boomer mindset, which is no mean feat.
Jack Kennedy can sit secure in his place in the pantheon of great American speakers giving their inaugural address, along with FDR, and perhaps even Reagan, but I really liked the speech, none the less. Much better the second time, and even better the third listen, at a celebratory party we went to last night. I think it was too short, and in some ways liked much of what he said on Sunday better, and it was more than a little dismal in places, which I understand was deliberate (and understandable), to lower expectations, but I wish there had been a line or two that jumped out, that people would be quoting as soon as it had ended, and there was nothing like that. The pacing certainly could have been much better. He needed to have more pauses in the delivery, so the crowd could have a chance to respond, and also to draw a line between points he was trying to make. The quote of Washington, as an example, in the dark days of the Revolution, went far too quickly into Barack's own words, making the distinction difficult to follow, in my opinion. Still and all, very, very good. Rev. Joseph Lowery was fantastic! Geez... if he ministered a church near me, I might have to Come to Jesus, just to be able to listen the the gentleman. What a jewel of a man!
