Employing this strategy against any fronting defense will make our offense unstoppable! Battier getting fronted by a 6 ft tall guard? Yao getting fronted by a 6'6 center? No problem! <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-42c470-MjM&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-42c470-MjM&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
It's definitely been posted before, can't dig for the link though. Pretty fun, but I doubt we'd ever do that.
Concur. Yao would fumble that pass about half the time. The other half, someone else would beat him to the ball.
They also didnt have the athletes we do today. Players today can jump through the roof - Yao would have no chance at getting the rebound. Rockets also post Yao from the baselines rather than right in front of the basket so this play would never work for us. The only way to beat a fronting defense is quick ball movement, crisp ball movement. Or just let Yao set a high screen and let him take 15-17ft jumpers...that's money all day/night!

lmao hell yea thatll solve all that and if Yao cant get to it, Hill or Scola or Bosh or whomever is the PF next to Yao next season
Here is the solution: When Yao is fronted PF should go to the FT line and ask for the ball.. When PF receives ball Yao should turn and pin his man away from the basket! PF has a choice for the easy HI/LO to the giant on the inside with his hands 10ft in the air or 15ft jumper. I never understood why we just sat there thinking Yao would magically gain position.. We don't need trick plays just common basket ball sense!
I think Martin and Brooks are the solution to fronting. If Yao is fronted, one of our fast guards can attack the basket, Yao can seal out his man (who is likely the resident shot-blocker) and protect the drive's path to the basket. If the layup isn't there, the guard has improved his angle for a chip pass to Yao with his defender out of position.
1) Throwing the ball of the backboard might work once or twice ... you can't use it over and over ... 2) Go out and try this play yourself and see how hard it is to throw the ball perfectly and how hard it is to catch the ball, especially with defenders on both players and different angles.
Jeez, kids these days... What are you talking about? This wasn't the Middle Ages where the average hight was 5'5" and people rarely lived past their 30's. This was the era of Dr. J., Bird, Magic, Dream, Dominique, Drexler, Worthy and that guy Jordan among others. The guy they took advantage of on that play was Dennis Rodman. I think they had some athletes back then too.
This. And if the defense sags the paint and "sandwiches" Yao, there's always the open jumper weakside, that's how Scola torched Portland last playoffs.
By the way, here's a Bird highlight reel... for the youngsters, I'll go ahead and note that the rims in this video are indeed 10 feet off the ground and the court is the same size as the ones you see today. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ULvo7__wwBU&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ULvo7__wwBU&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
